1. By many respects, it is not surprising that

languages have a tendency to change. After all,
they are passed down through the generations
reliably enough for parents and children to
communicate with each other. -----.
For example, while Japanese has changed
relatively little over 1,000 years, English
evolved rapidly in just a few centuries. Many
present-day speakers find Shakespeares
sixteenth century texts difficult and Chaucers
fourteenth century Canterbury Tales nearly
impossible to read.

A) Most Asian languages must have undergone a

rapid transformation, which made their origins
almost impossible to trace.
B) There are also other social means that lead to
specific alterations in a language, such as
wars and trade.
C) In fact, linguists find that all languages change
over time at different rates.
D) As soon as society has become exposed to
borrowed words from another, a crucial
change is surely inevitable.
E) New generations usually are more likely to
trigger changes in a language, especially in
the western world.

2. The Civil Rights movement in the US in the

1960s and onward was a political movement.
People who led the way for the movement
organized in to a specific group and did not
intend to gain political achievements. -----.
This ultimately led to political legislation that
helped to desegregate schools, to provide
fairness in the workplace, and to outlaw
discriminatory activities on a number of fronts.

A) The political atmosphere was not well suited

for other reforms that were regarded as vital by
most of the society.
B) Instead, the group of people who were at the
center of this political movement were doing all
they could to perceive all the races as equal.
C) Corruption, bribery and trade deficits are just
several of the obstacles that the nation has to
tackle with during the century.
D) Thus, it came to all appearances that political
thinking was divided in the US for various
reasons.
E) However, advances in technology were
overshadowed by the heated environment of
the Cold War period.

3. -----.The most common theme is that of his

innocent characters who are mistakenly
suspected or accused of a crime and who must
then track down the real perpetrator in order to
clear himself. Another, theme is that of the
guilty woman who enmeshes a male
protagonist and ends up either destroying him
or being saved by him; examples include
Blackmail, Sabotage, Notorious, Rebecca,
Vertigo, and Marnie. The third theme is that of
the murderer whose identity is established
during the working out of the plot; examples of
this theme include Shadow of a Doubt, Rope,
Rear Window, and Psycho.
A) The son of a London poultry dealer, Alfred
Hitchcock attended St. Ignatius College,
London, and the University of London
B) During the next three decades Hitchcock
usually made a film a year in the Hollywood
motion-picture system.
C) Alfred Hitchcock is also well-known for the
technical innovations that he introduced to film
making.
D) Having achieved success at almost all the
films he produced, Hitchcock dealt with politics
for a while.
E) Alfred Hitchcock's films usually centre on
either murder or espionage, but three main
themes predominate in Hitchcock's films.
4. The world will probably meet one of the most
significant inventions in fuel technology these
days. A researcher on cancer has accidentally
found an extra-ordinary way to burn salt water,
a novel invention that is being marked by one
chemist as the "most probable alternative fuel"
water science discovery in a century. When he
tried to desalinate seawater with a radiofrequency generator he developed to treat
cancer, he discovered that as long as the salt
water was exposed to the radio frequencies it
would burn. -----.
A) Scientists have been excited by the discovery
of the prospect of using salt water, the most
abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.
B) Now that the rate of cancer has been
increasing dramatically in the world, new
innovations will soon follow.
C) Nevertheless, it is still too early to decide if salt
water can be used for medical purposes or not.
D) Scientists have not been convinced yet about
the fact that seawater may have multifunctional
properties.
E) The exact basis of such a distinction is that
fossil fuels will not last forever

5. The Black Death was one of the deadliest
pandemics in human history, peaking in
Europe between 1348 and 1350. Usually
thought to have started in Central Asia, it had
reached the Crimea by 1346. -----.
Subsequently, it spread throughout the
Mediterranean and Europe and it is estimated
to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe's
population, reducing the world's population
from an estimated 450 million to between 350
and 375 million in 1400. This has been seen as
creating a series of religious, social and
economic upheavals which had profound
effects on the course of European history. It
took 150 years for Europe's population to
recover. The plague returned at various times,
resulting in a larger number of deaths, until it
left Europe in the 19th century.

A) Medieval people called the catastrophe of the

14th century either the "Great Pestilence"' or
the "Great Plague".
B) Swedish and Danish chronicles of the 16th
century described the events as "black" for the
first time, not to describe the late-stage sign of
the disease.
C) Several possible causes have been advanced
for the Black Death, the most prevalent of
which is the bubonic plague theory.
D) From there, the plague was probably carried
by fleas residing on the black rats that were
regular passengers on merchant ships.

6. As the Internet becomes more and more

commonplace, Internet identity theft has
become a challenge of pandemic proportions.
According to an analysis, 1 in 8 Americans in
the last 5 years has been affected by Internet
identity theft. Internet identity theft is different
from common identity theft in a few ways.
Common identity theft takes place after
something is physically stolen from you like a
wallet containing credit cards and a drivers
license or an un-shredded credit card
statement from your garbage bin. The thief
would take this information and use it to make
a false purchase without any limit any being
recognized by cameras or shop assistants. -----

A) Thus, internet identity theft can be much worse

than theft in its common form.
B) The rise of identity theft in the US has alarmed
the congress, which is expected to introduce
harsh measures for commercial web sites.
C) More than three-thirds of every person using
internet today makes use of internet purchases
every day.
D) Despite reliability issues, there rate of internet
use is in significant increase over the past two
decades.
E) International organizations are keen to prevent
security threats through internet so that online
marketing will not be adversely affected.

E) Some historians have suggested another

theory for the cause of the Black Death, one
that points to social, agricultural and economic
causes.
