Coupling device

Comprehensive stand-alone coupling device for PLC telecommunications

Using a power line as the transmission

medium, the PLC Telecommunications world
requires particular interfacing functions
between telecommunications equipment
(power line carrier equipment) and highvoltage components such as the line, line trap
circuits and coupling capacitors.
ALSTOM Grid has designed the
e-terragridcom LMU coupling device
specically for this type of application,
guaranteeing the ultimate quality in terms of
reliability and safety.
Without any additional accessories, the
e-terragridcom LMU fulls the modularity of
the various congurations encountered in the
power line technique (phase earth coupling,
phase-phase coupling, inter-circuit coupling).

The best way to cope

with line characteristics
Based on a new design, the e-terragridcom
LMU is a part of the 5000 Telecom product
range and offers the following features:

Efcient protection against HV power effect

and transient voltage picks, ensuring a
high level of safety for staff and excellent
protection for the power line carrier
equipment.
Designed to provide a fast and efcient
commissioning
Matching characteristics that cope with all
the impedances between a
PLC equipment and the power line /
coupling capacitor circuit.

Customer Benets
High safety levels
Compliant with all PLC
transmissions
Easy to install and congure
Cost effective solution
Allows a wide range of
applications
Extended temperature range

Simplied Installation

Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the usual arrangement for e-terragridcom LMU (coupling to the HV Line)
by single phase or multi-phase methods

The e-terragridcom LMU is designed to

operate with many different sizes of R.F
coaxial cables and with all different sections of
copper bar.

Phase-to-Earth Coupling

Outstanding protection level

Coupling capacitor terminal.

The connection is protected against any
unwanted contact (personnel protection).
Grounding switch
This protection device is used during
the unit adjustment (commissioning)
or testing (maintenance). For safety
reasons, the grounding switch is coupled
to the door control so that whenever the
e-terragridcom LMU door is opened a
preliminary grounding process is initiated.

Line 2

Attenuation Device
An additional (optional) attenuator is available
for short lines with low R.F attenuation.
It provides an efcient solution against
line reections and resulting impedance
distortions, based on extensive knowledge and
detailed analysis capability
