Kindergarten!
Presented by the
SPS Kindergarten Team
August 2016

Welcome!
Welcome! We would like to take the opportunity
to share information about kindergarten
standards and what the year holds for you as
the parent of a kindergarten student. We hope
you will find this helpful as we start the year
together. You are always free to contact your
childs teacher with further questions.
The SPS Kindergarten Teachers

Kindergarten
Learning Goals
Our kindergarten learning goals for each nine
week grading period contain the Tennessee
standards we will be teaching for each subject
area. Our learning goals follow the curriculum
guides set by Rutherford County schools.
Today you will receive the 1st nine weeks learning
goals. We will include the learning goals for the
2nd-4th nine weeks in the report cards.

Assessments
Assessments are an important part of your childs education
as they give us information about your childs academic
growth throughout the year.
One assessment we use is called EASY CBM.
This is a universal screener and progress monitoring tool
supported by Rutherford County to identify students who
may need further instructional support through RTI in the
areas of early literacy and numeracy. If a student does
qualify for additional support through RTI, parents will be
notified.
Another assessment we administer are our Power Standard
Assessments. These are administered each nine week
grading period and cover the focus standards throughout the
year.

EASY CBM
Easy CBM is administered three times a year.
Below are the skills assessed:

Mid Progress Reports

Mid progress reports will be sent home with each
student at the mid point in each grading period.
This will list the standards for reading/language,
writing and math for the nine week grading
period. As this is a mid progress report, many of
the standards are still being taught in the
classroom.
These should be signed by a parent or legal
guardian and returned to school the next day.

Standards Based
Report Card
Rutherford County uses a standards based report
card in Kindergarten. Report cards will be issued
4 times throughout the school year.
During each grading period we are looking at
specific standards that we have been teaching
and learning in class. This means that not every
standard will be marked in the report card during
every grading period.

Grading Rubric

Mid Progress Reports and the kindergarten report

card use a grading rubric based on the following scale:

quality work consistently.
3- Meeting grade level standard and producing quality
work.
2- Progressing toward the standard. Producing grade
level required work with teacher direction and
assistance.
1- Beginning to develop the standard. Not yet able to
produce the required grade level work.
** A score of 1 or 2 is acceptable at the beginning of
the school year. It takes time to learn
