Thoughts on Fasting
God does not demand that Christians fast, however the Bible reveals fasting
as something that is beneficial. The book of Acts show believers fasting before
they made important decisions (Acts 13:2; 14:23). Fasting and prayer are
often linked together (Luke 2:37; 5:33). Too often our focus when fasting is on
the lack of food, missing the point that fasting is about taking our eyes off the
things of this world to focus ourselves completely on God. Fasting is a way to
show to ourselves and God, that we are serious about our relationship with
Him and totally reliant upon Him
30 Days of PrayerSeptember 2016
Throughout our recent review and re casting of our vision and in consulting with a
range of people outside of BCF as part of this process, we have repeatedly been
reminded of the importance of corporate and individual prayer. This is something
we take seriously and so we are calling for the BCF church family to join us in 30
days of prayer and fasting starting from 1/9/16.
A Variety of Means
We will use a variety of ways to help us all engage in this important activity.
The first and most basic is this prayer calendar, to remind you what we are
praying for each day. We will also use texts, WhatsApp and social media (Prayer
Hammer, Facebook, Twitter) to post relevant information to help keep things
focused. (Dont worry if you are not on line well do copies on paper too) We are
going to ask different folks from BCF to play a part in leading the praying on
different days to keep things fresh.
We want Life Groups and Ministry teams to engage in this process in group
meetings and across your group members please, we will of course include
prayer in our Sunday meetings and as ever there is the Prayer Network meeting
at the Manna House 8:00pm on Friday Sept 2nd
Fasting Days
Over the 30 days of prayer we are calling the church to fast on two days
(see over), in fasting together we show our unity as a church and our
commitment to serving God. Below are some brief thoughts on fasting, if
you have any questions on this topic, as ever, please feel free to ask one
of the Elders
Fasting in the Bible was nearly always fasting from food, there are other ways
to fast. Anything given up temporarily in order to focus all our attention on God
can be considered a fast (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). Fasting should be limited to a
set time, especially if fasting from food or drink. Long periods of time without
eating can be harmful to the body. (Fasting is not intended to punish the flesh)
Anyone can fast, but some may not be able to fast from food (diabetics, for
example) however everyone can temporarily give up something in order to
draw closer to God.
Fasting is not a way to get God to do what we want. Fasting changes us, not
God.
Nor is fasting a way to appear more spiritual than others. Fasting should be
done in a spirit of humility and a joyful attitude. (See Matt 6:16-18)
Isaiah 58:6 The purpose for our fasting
Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every
yoke?
