codes?
There is really an unresolved debated topic regarding the enforcement of dress code
within the college campus. In this very well-groomed and fashionable world, where
everybody wants to look smart and stylish; this is certainly an unsettled problem. In
the past years, we normally wear formal shirts, pants and tie or salwar-suits. Now-adays, college students are not behind from sleeveless T-shirts, exclusive tops and
skirts, jeans and bermudas etc. and I am myself confused, which side to choose as
the dress code system has advantages as well as disadvantages.
On this topic, there has been pro-longed discussion on whether it is essential or not.
Talking about the gains, the most distinctive feature of the dress code system is the
backdrop of homogeneity in the colleges. If there is a particular dress code in the
college, then every student will look identical. We may find an essential element of
unity among students where they wear uniform and there will be no discrimination
on the basis of looks. In this addition, the students, who come from the various
backgrounds, cultures and traditions, will learn to live together. Eventually, uniforms
may inculcate feelings of patriotism and attachment for their respective colleges as
it adds integrity to every student. One may even say that being inside the premises,
college students should look like students. Dress code should be defined as decent
dresses; off campus, any dresses not to mind. Girls wearing minis revealing skin
inside campus is like insulting the institutions discipline where students come to
learn not to for a dance in a disco. Ufff! A lot of things Arent they? However, I feel
a little less about the thing that uniform in colleges may get an approval for it
develops the spirit of belongingness.
Where as, turning another aspect; if the dress code will not get enforced in the
college, then students will obviously be more interested in showing off. In this case,
they will wear most expensive, antique or funny dresses for looking different in the
college. In the classroom, funky dresses are always distracting the students and
sometimes teachers may find difficulty in teaching. But, thinking of the old times,
we spend 12 years of our school wearing boring uniforms every day and we all look
forward to going to colleges and wearing our favourite clothes, and after college one
has to follow dress code in office as well! So why not let students wear whatever
they want to wear? Who needs moral policing for the whole life? Thus, somewhat
down the line this dress code system may seem to be an unfair call. Also, its not
like if we have a dress code we just stick to it, we make sure to go out of our way to
go against at, and bend the rules as far as they go. In conclusion, Id say that
enforcing dress code is a big controversy. The university or government must not
intervene. It should be left to the individual colleges to decide if a ban is to be
implemented or not. It should also be given freedom to decide which type of apparel
is acceptable and which are not. The social conditioning of the student body has to
be given due respect. It would be great if the Student Council gets in on the act and
gets into discussion with the governing board about this. It will be unfair if dress
codes in colleges are imposed solely on the basis of the heads of the college without
consulting the students. Still, one should have the privilege to choose what they

want to wear, but common sense should help everyone realise they should appear
to class in a decent dress. And college students must be sensible in this regard with
what to wear in college. At the same time, it is advisable to look decent, modest
and not cross the boundaries with whatever you wear. The only thing to remember
is to avoid wearing revealing clothes. Fashion is good, but please never forget that
certain dresses are for parties and some are for college-wear. Dress for the
occasion.

Uniforms in colleges? Not cool!

Summer may be a time to beat the heat and stay indoors, but it is also a time
when college students start hoarding their wardrobe with clothes that rank
high in the style quotient. But this summer, their effort to make a statement
with their clothes may be in vain. Degree colleges in the city are now trying to
implement a uniform for its students. This decision comes after several PU
colleges are opting to enforce uniforms for its +1 and +2 students.
This year, the uniform has been made compulsory for students of B.COM,
BBA and BBM.
Dayanand Sagar Institution's Principal earlier issued a statement that he
would make formals compulsory for students of management, stating wearing
blazers would make students ready for the corporate world. Other colleges
refused to comment when we contacted them. Several institutions have
already made uniform compulsory on certain days during term time and on
special occasions, the foreboding question that looms is: can clothes prepare
you for a world that is further away from the gates of a college? Is this rule
highly regressive?
Akamsha Nair, a second year communications student at Mount Carmel
College says, "You don't let a person grow up when you impose such rules.
They are against the spirit of a college." While students say that they would
grudgingly accept such rules, they also believe that most of these rules are
baseless. "They should consider our opinion before they implement such
ideas. College administration suddenly introduces a rule which would have
probably occurred to them the day before," says Pavan Poojary, a second
year engineering student at Dayanand Sagar of Institutions.

But there are those who do believe that wearing uniforms may indeed be a
good thing. Chaitra Pathande, a second year arts student of Jyoti Nivas
College says that one should wear clothes appropriate to the occasion.
"Sometimes students don't know how to dress properly for conferences, so
implementing a uniform gives them an exposure. They would be ready when
they step into an office for their first job," she says. Some students would even
don a uniform for the sheer glamour of it. "We need to wear a uniform on
Mondays to college anyway. We have to wear a green tie and blue shirt. I like
wearing it because it is cool," says Kevin, a management student at St.
Josephs College.

While college authorities want to instil a sense of discipline through such rules
they are completely unnecessary, says Sanjana Ravi, a second year
management student at Christ University. "We already know that we have to
go dressed in formals when we enter an office. So there is no point in giving
us that exposure in college." College administrations believe that students
don't know if they've come dressed to a college or a mall, and hence this rule.
But Akamsha adds, "We know how to dress decently. After all, how should the
way you dress in a mall be any different from the way you dress to college?"

This is a contentious and much debated topic amongst the academia and other
social circles. Be it in Pakistan, or around the world, this idea has been
discussed multiple times and on different forums. However, I feel that
university students should definitely wear uniforms, and here are a few
reasons why:
Saving money

An average student spends around Rs50,000 a year on clothes for university. Having a
couple of uniforms instead of fashion statement clothes for the university will not amount to
more than Rs10,000 per year. This means that an average of Rs40,000 can be saved per
student. Multiply this by a 1,000 students and we are saving a huge bundle by simply
enforcing uniforms. The students can pool in the savings and set up other state-of-the-art
facilities, like food courts or better labs.
Less time consuming

A boy who studies at a university spends about 20 minutes to get ready in the morning, and
most of this time is spent in selecting an outfit. The same goes for the girls who end up
wasting at least 30 minutes in getting dressed. Having a uniform would mean that each

university student would save, on average, at least 15 minutes per day, which now they can
consume doing something constructive instead, like spending some quality time with their
parents before leaving or having a proper breakfast instead of rushing out the door.
Physical fitness

Considering how unflattering most uniforms are and what a poor job they do in
camouflaging curves and flab, students will have to work much harder to look good in their
uniforms. This means students will be spending more hours in the gym now, causing the
rates of Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cardiac diseases and other obesity-related
problems to decrease.
No room for excuses

In cases where teachers and students indulge in illicit affairs, the usual answer brought forth
by teachers, after being questioned, is,
Oh, I didnt know he/she was a student. I thought he/she was a colleague.
When the student is in a uniform, this excuse will no longer remain valid.
Research polls

Though no survey on this topic has been done in Pakistan, in Thailand a Suan Dusit
poll conducted just last week (September 14-17, 2013) showed that 94.4% of 1,293 university
students in greater Bangkok think uniforms are necessary to maintain order and their
identity. 70.96% think they should wear the uniform everyday while they attend classes. So
if they are okay with it, what issues do we have?
A symbol of being a student

Often when I am standing behind someone in a line, I have heard the teller ask for a student
ID card and more often than not, the person has left it at home. When he/she is wearing the
uniform, getting student discounts on coffees, fast food, and even travel will be a piece of
cake. If someone asks for a student ID, simply do a twirl and show them your clothes as
identity of being a student.
Difference between students and teachers

When I was teaching, it was often hard to differentiate between the throngs of students
roaming through the college and the dozens of Teacher Assistants (TA) who had barely
graduated a month ago. Sometimes I would invite a girl to grab coffee with me and only
later on realise that she is a student and not a TA. Had the students been in uniform, this
problem wouldnt have taken place at all.
Appropriate dressing

As someone who has taught at two co-educational institutes, I have seen it all from plunging
necklines to pants which disappear at the thigh to the I-am-not-sure-you-want-to-know.

Though I dont mind all the scenery, I think boys spend about 60 minutes every day just
ogling their colleagues. Thats again a lot of time spent doing nothing. If this time was to be
used on learning Maths, our country would be rich in engineers and mathematicians.
Uniforms can maintain an equal standard of dressing for all students.
Benefits to the uniform industry

With the demand for uniforms increasing, to meet the supply requirements the industry
would have to hire more employees. Thus, not only would this benefit the students but even
the nation as a whole.
Whats the harm?

Lastly, my question is, why not just wear a uniform? Not wearing them is not making our
students any smarter, sharper, or better! Then why not just wear them and make life
easier for all?
Hence, with so many positives and useful reasons, I see no point as to why students should
not wear uniforms.

Uniform represents the college identity and character with student who wears it so by
wearing uniform student feel more responsible person for their college image building

You need to learn to dress for Success

As I walk down the street at my college, I look around and see business majors walking
around in pristine suits and dress shoes. Another look, and I see some education majors
walking around in functional, business casual clothing. Yet another glance and I see the
nursing majors trooping towards their classes in scrubs. College is a chance for students to

learn to dress for their career. Having a standardized uniform for the whole campus deprives
students of the chance to figure out for themselves what is and isn't appropriate to wear in
various environments.

College students are grown ups

As a student i dont want college students should follow strict rules of college dress code
because they are no longer child they have better idea of their own of what is wrong or not.
They are grown ups and have independent to wear instead of college dress in their college
premises.

We are studying college to develop our knowledge and personality if we wear uniform in
such places then we would get only school feeling not college feeling so Wearing uniform in
colleges should be avoided. Moreover it is just an additional income to colleges not good for

I know what it takes to have a uniform. If it's a custom uniform made by the school you're
going to have to pay for it, or the school to find someway to get you to pay for it. Even if it's
just a list of items you should have to spend anymore money than you already have to!
I don't mean to sound cheap, but when you're paying for college... Every. Dime. Counts.

college have the right to express themselves. In this academia setting one should encourage
students to get out and begin to learn about themselves more. I believe uniforms in this

increase behavior and performance among students. But, at the college level it is all adults
attending the school and they should be mature enough to not need uniforms. If they are
not mature enough, they will probably not make it through college anyways.

I am a college student, and I can say with absolute certainty that the majority of students at
my school would be against this. School uniforms prevent people from being who they are. I
like being able to choose what I want to wear based on who I am. This would be impossible if
I was required to wear a uniform.

It is not cost effective.

The cost of attending college is already high enough without adding school uniforms to the
list. Also, by the time people go to college, they should have a sense of what is appropriate
attire and what is not. It is a part of growing up and being responsible. Students should not
have to be told what is or is not acceptable.

School uniforms should not be made mandatory at schools. Students should be able to wear
whatever they want to on campus or in class. Tuition and books already cost enough. It is a
little over the top to ask students to purchase school uniforms as well. Leave this out of
universities.
