doormat. As Peter was going home late, he advised his friend to
go into the kitchen and help himself to food and drink.
Two hours later, his friend telephoned him from the flat. He
told Peter that he was listening to some of his records after
having a truly wonderful meal. Now, he said, he was drinking a
glass of orange juice and he hoped that Peter would join him.
When Peter asked his friend if he had reached the flat without
difficulty, he answered that he couldnt find the key under the
doormat, but luckily, the living room window, just by the apple
tree, had been left open and he had climbed in. Peter listened to
all this in surprise. There is no apple tree in front of his living
room, but there is one in front of his neighbours.

A summer trip
Last summer I went on a trip with my family to a beautiful
island. We had to get a boat from the mainland, to reach the
island. A man rowed the boat for us.
There were a few other people on board the boat, too. They
were very friendly and we ended up spending a lot of time with
them on the island.
Their hotel room was right beside ours. They had a young
daughter my age, and we spent a lot of time playing together.
We exchanged our telephone numbers and addresses so we
could phone and write to each other. The food at the hotel was

Unit 19: Relative Pronouns clauses

Relative pronouns (who, which, whose, that) introduce relative clauses. A
relative clauses tells us which person or thing the speaker means.
Example: The woman who works with me is an American.
relative clause
( The relative clause identifies which woman the speaker is talking about.)

* We use "who / that" to refer to people.

ex: The man who / that stole the car is in prison now.
* We use "which / that" to refer to objects or animals.
ex: The table which / that is in the kitchen is very old.
* We use "whose" with people, animals and things to show possession.
ex: This is the boy whose sister is a singer.

Relative pronouns as subject or object:

Who/ Which / That cannot be omitted if it is the subject of the
relative clause; that is, when there is no noun or subject pronoun
between the relative pronoun and the verb.
Example:
I know a girl. She has four dogs.
I know a girl who/ that has four dogs.
( The relative pronoun is the subject , we cant omit it.)
Who/ Which /That can be omitted when it is the object of the
relative clause; that is, when there is a noun or subject pronoun
between the relative pronoun and the verb.
55

Example:
Thats the bicycle. I bought it last week.
Thats the bicycle (which / that) I bought last week.
( The relative pronoun is the object; we can omit it.)
We use whose instead of possessive adjectives (my, your, his,
etc) with people, objects and animals to show possession.
Examples:
Thats the little girl - her dress is dirty.
Thats the little girl whose dress is dirty.
