As you probably know, a large

percentage of air side economizers
have been found to be bypassed or
disconnected. The root cause of this
varies, but the fundamental problem
was how to prevent this from
happening. On the water side, pumps
and controls have become very
complicated and, based on the new
2013 T-24, need to be monitored.

JEFFS BLOG
Its hard to believe it is already
October (especially since my air
conditioners are still running)! Our
golf tournament this month was
the most successful ever. It was
the first time it has ever
been sold out. I want to give
my personal thanks to Dan
Davitt and all those
who volunteered their
time to plan and help. I also
want to thank the many sponsors,
whose support made it all
possible.

I am very excited for our joint

meeting this month with ASPE.
Just as we collaborate with others
in our jobs daily, I believe that
collaboration with other
organizations will make our
chapter stronger and provide
opportunities for us to
grow professionally.
Looking ahead, we have
a Distinguished
Lecturer slated for
the November
meeting and then the joint
meeting in December with the

WHAT IN THE HECK IS AN EVASE?

rectangular, the number of sides
that diverge simultaneously and
the angle at which each side
diverges are variables for
consideration. The ratio of the
larger area to the smaller area is a
factor as well; a factor with tradeoffs. The percent regain is
highest for the smallest area ratio
and for the smallest divergence
angle. Roughly, this means the
percentage of velocity pressure
regained is highest when there is
little velocity pressure to regain:
Other benefits of using an
evase can include reduced lower
sound levels and slightly lower fan
speeds for belt drive units, or
smaller fan diameter or slower
speeds for direct-driven fans.
Mentioned earlier, installing
Evases at exhaust duct outlets
and not just fan outlets can have
the same effect as if installed at
the fan outlet. Though the inertia
of an exhaust airstream can often
be a challenge to the system
designer, it can also be a
blessing. The trick is to convert
some of the velocity pressure of
an exhaust airstream to static
pressure with controlled diffusion.
The reduction in fan total
pressures and fan static pressure
is equal to the reduction in the
velocity pressure at the duct
outlet minus the total pressure
loss in the evase section.

Evase Sizing and Selection

Many fans have outlet
velocities that are higher than the
system designer would want to
run through the outlet ductwork,
as the ducting losses would be
(See WHAT IS AN EVASE? page 4)

high at these velocities. In such

cases, expanding the duct area
using an evase does more than
produce static-regain from the
fan. It also reduces the friction
losses in the larger ductwork as a
dual benefit.
Some duct systems are spaceconstricted and must necessarily
use relatively small ducts with
high static pressure losses. In
such cases, the user pays a
penalty in the form of high
operating costs however, if size is
not severely constricted, using
larger ductwork and moving air at
a lower velocity can be beneficial.
As a rule of thumb, when
design predicts that air velocity in
a system will reach or exceed
3,000 FPM that air has inertia. It
does not like to change direction
abruptly. When forced to do so,
that air becomes turbulent

resulting in wasted energy.

Because the evase is
essentially a piece of expanding
duct, either the fan manufacturer
or the fan purchaser can supply it.
After selecting the fan, employ an
evase to reduce the velocity
pressure at the duct outlet for
best fan/system performance.
The cost of operating a fan at a
lower total static pressure can
offset the cost of an evase.
Gradual duct transitions and
lower fan speeds also result in
lower sound levels. When outlet
velocities exceed 3,000 fpm,
consider the use of a duct evase
to reduce outlet velocity with
controlled diffusion.
Often you can find Evases at
the fan outlets on top of cooling
towers where the warm humid
discharge air (rejected heat)
leaves the tower into the
atmosphere. The evase in this
case acts as an exhaust diffuser

To get a Season Pass, simply indicate your intentions with your advanced reservations online
or at check-in for the September 22nd meeting while bringing your $260.00.
One checkdone paid up for the ENTIRE YEAR!
Assuming you plan to attend all nine meetings, the Season Pass cost
averages to less than $29 per meeting!

Thereafter, just register in advance online stating your meal choice and
that you will pay at the door. Then, let Erica Kerr know at the door that youve
arrived the night of the meeting to receive your meal ticket.
But wait! Theres more! If you have an aversion to long term commitments, your pass is even transferable to a friend or colleague for an
evening that you miss!
Beyond supporting your Chapter, convenience alone should tempt you to
consider a season pass. So, why not take the step now to eliminate one
uncertainty from your life Buying a Season Pass locks in a genuine
bargain! Steve Rawski
