An Introduction to the Global Issues Group

Global Issues Group (GIG) is an international, student-run initiative

designed to foster a supportive environment in which students can create
their own service projects. Our goal and mission statement is to design
service and environmental projects that will lead to impactful changes
towards the issues that plague our world today. To do this, we invite
students from Middle and High school to join our group in the hopes that
we can tackle the major global issues that affect the world today, whether
that be poverty, environmental destruction, lack of access to drinking
water, and gender equality to list a few.
The Global Issues Group was founded at the International School of
Beijing in 2007 and has since then guided over two-dozen independent
projects, most of which were dedicated towards improving our local
community. These include a city-wide fundraising effort to provide air
masks for children to visiting various community centers in Hebei to
provide tutoring and educational support. With support from our
teachers and student leaders, we provide students with the resources
and guidance they need to initiate their own projects.
As regards to the specifics of what we do, over the past three years,
weve been collaborating closely with Roundabout, a local NGO
dedicated towards fundraising for those who approach them in need. Just
recently, we worked together to fund the operations needed for ten
children whom have leukemia. Fortunately, all ten surgeries were
successful!
Over the course of the 2015-2016 school year, the Global Issues
Group has specifically focused towards fixing the lack of educational
opportunities for migrant children in Beijing. By working collaboratively
with Pencils of Promise (a service organization providing schools and
education for children around the world), formed its first-ever chapter in
China and have collectively worked to visit and teach at migrant schools
in the greater Beijing area.

Global Issues Group , has partnered with the recently with the
GSIS mercy angels society. I would also like to inform you that we have
been pursuing student led social initiatives at GSIS as well, under the
umbrella of Mercy Angels Society. Mercy Angels Society has been
involved in various fund raising activities and volunteer programs. We
have been carrying out city wide fund raising drives for Internally
Displaced Persons (IDPs) and for people affected by natural disasters.
Running after-school classes for under-privileged children of the
community were also one of the activities Mercy Angels Society pursued
regularly throughout last year.
We are looking to expand this circle of pupils and other concerned
individuals around the world looking to work for a better world and
society
We would love to join hands with Ideas foundation as Ideas Foundations
has been working to eluviate leadership among individuals in Pakistan.
Sincerely,
