Course Description
General Outcomes: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to
1) Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences by discovering possibilities
and extending awareness.
2) Comprehend literature and other texts in oral, print, visual and multimedia forms
and respond personally, critically, and creatively. This will be achieved by
constructing meaning from text and context, understanding and appreciating
textual forms, elements and techniques, and responding to a variety of print and
non-print text.
3) Manage ideas and information by determining inquiry or research requirements
as well as following a plan of inquiry.
4) Create oral, print, visual and multimedia texts, and enhance the clarity and
artistry of communication. This will be achieved developing and presenting a
variety of print and non-print texts as well as improving thoughtfulness,
effectiveness and correctness of communication.
5) Respect, support and collaborate with others by working within a group and
respecting others and strengthening communication.

Other Important Dates:


Term: September 6th, 2016 to January 27th, 2017
Midterm Exams will take place between November 2nd and 4th.
Final Exams will take place between January 23rd and 27th

Since the main goal of this course is to improve the student's ability listen, speak, read,
write, view and represent effectively in English, the following teaching/literacy strategies

The rubrics for assessing creative assignments (personal response) and essays
(critical/analytical) will be the one used by the Alberta Department of Education. Copies
of these rubrics have been attached.

Classroom Policies:
1) The use of cell phones or recording devices is prohibited during class. They
are to be kept in your bag or in your locker.
2) Assignments are to be handed in on the specified date. There is a 10%
deduction for every day that the assignment is late. After two days, the student
will receive a Zero. The students are given ample time to complete the work and
therefore, there is no reason for tardiness.
3) All written assignments are to be emailed to me at spenney@gov.nu.ca
4) Absenteeism is not a valid excuse for missed work. If you know ahead of time
that you are somewhere where there is no or unreliable internet connection, you
are to submit your work before you leave. If you are supposed to give a
presentation during the time you are absent, you must present prior to going
away.
5) Plagiarism will result in an immediate mark of zero. Plagiarism is the use of
thoughts or word for word copying.
6) All students are to come to class prepared with the appropriate texts, paper, pens
and any other material required for class. Students should have a binder and a
USB key.
7) All personal responses and critical essays are to be submitted in the MLA format.
Students are to save their document listing their name. Use 1.5 spacing.
8) When a student misses class, it is his/her responsibility to catch up on the

assignments, notes, class work and homework. Please have a buddy who will
provide you with the work you have missed.
9) All students must properly care for the assigned texts and return them in good
order.
10) I use email as a means of contact with students and parents. Please provide the
email addresses for both student and parents/guardians on the form provided.

1. A course blog has been created to assist students and parents with information
and assignments pertinent to class success. Please visit
www.inuksukenglish10.weebly.com regularly for updates.
2. With each corrected written assignment, I provide feedback on strengths as well
as suggestions to improve the students writing. Please take the time to read
them over.
