Save our youth with more sporting activities!

A

s we continue to celebrate

World titles it is perhaps
timely to reflect on the importance of physical education in
our school system.
Kids like to get physical
and are always seeking an opportunity to play. They have
been running, jumping or playing games on the streets or in
parks and other open spaces
during the summer break.
As health practitioners
would tell us, physical activity
is vital to the holistic development of young people, fostering
their physical, social and emotional health.
Despite recognition of the
positive impact of sport on ed-

ucation and child development,

physical education is being increasingly challenged within
education systems across New
York City, if not the rest of the
nation.
Several schools, especially
in African American communities, are crying out for more resources to be allocated to
physical education. The current
state of our schools physical
education infrastructure, the
number of trained staff and the
absence of playing fields and
indoor tracks, is denying our
youth from achieving successes
like Bolts.
It is imperative that the
City and State of New York allocate adequate resources to
boost the physical education
programs in our schools -- from
kindergarten to high schools,
especially in our poorer com-

munities -- as a strategy to tap

into the natural exuberance and
energy of our youth.
This is the period when
most of our misguided youth
most often turn to drugs, crime
and other antisocial behavior.
Several Caribbean countries,

including Jamaica, are using

various sporting occupation to
transform our youth from poor
and humble situations into
world superstars and millionaires.
Superstars such as Usain
Bolt and Elaine Thompson, the
newly crowned double gold
Olympic medalist, are prime
examples of modern-day heroes
for our kids to emulate. There
are also hundreds of other
African American athletics and
sporting champions we can engage to help change the lives of
our kids.
Sporting activities are always a win-win strategy for ordinary people as it promotes
better health and could serve as
the gateway for our youth to
adopt as a sporting career.
Its time to save our youth
with more sporting activities.

The photo and story worry
me as a Senator, a Minister, a

sexual activity with a child

impact on the child.
I urge the City of New

Mount Vernon Mayor Launches

4 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER AUGUST 19-31, 2016

#SaveOurParks #FixOurSewers

Dear Mount Vernon friends and family:

write today to raise your awareness about
an issue of serious concern facing the
City of Mount Vernon. This week Mount
Vernon missed an August 31st deadline,
mandated by the federal Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), to begin work on
repairing our deteriorating sewer system.
This deadline was nothing new. The
city has been on notice that it must repair
its sewers since 2003 - 13 years ago. Since
I took office in January, my administration
has negotiated an array of cost-effective solutions with the EPA; however, city officials have rejected all the efforts we
presented to protect the environment.
This inaction has placed the City of
Mount Vernon in a precarious fiscal and
public health situation.

The EPA can now fine Mount Vernon

taxpayers approximately $525,000 per
week, for just two of numerous violations.
It is cheaper to keep our waterways clean
than to pay millions in unnecessary federal
penalties.
We can fix the pollution problem by
preserving our parkland and reclaiming the
greenway along the Hutchinson River. This
will connect Memorial Field and Wilson
Woods Park, giving Mount Vernon a premiere recreational and community space
and keeping our environment clean.
My friends, the financial practices of
the past are something the Mount Vernon of
the future cannot afford. We cannot keep
kicking the can down the road. We all know
what happens when you ignore your credit

Brooklyn DA
Settles Improper
Meal Expense
Tab with City

rooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson last Wednesday announced he has

agreed to pay a $15,000 fine for improper
meal expense payments.
The Conflicts of Interest Board says
between January 2014 and May 2014,
Thompson used more than $2,000 in office
funds to buy food.
He repaid the money two months later.
But Thompson also used nearly $1,500
in office funds to purchase dinner and
weekend meals from January 2014 to February of last year.
In some cases, investigators say he
made his security detail use their own
money to buy him food.
The District Attorney's office reimbursed the staff for nearly $2,000, but the
report finds some of the payments were delayed.
A spokesperson for Thompson released a statement on his behalf saying, "I
accept complete responsibility for this violation and regret that it occurred. As recognized by the Board, the Charter violation
occurred in the early part of my term as the
Kings County District Attorney, while I was
focused primarily on organizing my Office
and as new fiscal policies were being implemented."

up paying much more than you owed to

begin with. That is exactly what has been
happening with the EPA. To do this with
taxpayer dollars is foolish and it will stop
Mount Vernon from Moving Forward.
The tax threat facing us is clear and
dangerous. Short term political objectives
should not override proper policy needs.
Let the City Council and Comptroller know
you want them to support efforts to maintain a clean environment by saving our
parks and fixing our broken sewers.
We can have a better quality of life
without increasing costs to the taxpayer.
Join our initiative to #SaveOurParks and
#FixOurSewers.

A
QUEENS:
Queens County grand jury on Monday
(August 22) has returned a five-count indictment charging Oscar Morel, 35, of Brooklyn, with fatally shooting Imam Maulana
Akonjee and his associate and friend, Thara
Uddin, as they walked home following afternoon prayers at the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid
mosque in Ozone Park, Queens, earlier this
month.
Both men sustained gunshot wounds to
the head and were transported to a local
Queens hospital where they were pronounced
dead.
The indictment charges Morel with one
count of first-degree murder, two counts of
second- degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
If convicted, Morel faces up to life in prison
without the possibility of parole.
Queens District Attorney Richard A.
Brown said, In addition to the second-degree
murder charges, the grand jury has charged
the defendant with first-degree murder under
subparagraph (1)(a)(viii) of Penal Law Sec-

tion 125.27, which states, in part, that with

intent to cause the death of another person, he
causes the death of such person or of a third
person; and . . . as part of the same criminal
transaction, the defendant, with intent to
cause serious physical injury to or the death
of an additional person or persons, causes the
death of an additional person or persons..
The District Attorney added, The defendants alleged actions strike at the very heart
of our countys Muslim community. Both victims were gentle men of peace and their
deaths are a devastating loss to their families
and the community that they served. I extend
my deepest condolences to the families of the
victims and assure them that the law enforcement community will work tirelessly to ensure that justice is done in this case.
Morel, who was ordered held without
bail following his arraignment in Queens
Criminal Court on similar charges on
Wednesday, August 17, 2016, will be arraigned on the indictment at a later date in the
Supreme Court at Kew Gardens.

Tensions rise as

marches on Caracas
----------------------------------------------------,

CARACAS, VENEZUELA:
enezuela's opposition took to the streets
of the capital Caracas on Thursday, generating significant buzz on social media,
where independent and citizen reporters covered the event.
The protest was days in the making, as
native community groups from Amazonas,
Venezuela's most southern state, gradually
filled the city. Tensions grew as opponents
accused the opposition movement of preparations to stage a coup d'tat against President
Nicols Maduro's government.
Demonstrators said they were protesting
against the country's current economic turmoil, and they hope to pressure the government into holding a recall vote on Maduro.
For some time now, Venezuela has endured
an economic and political crisis, but conditions have worsened dramatically in the last
two years.
During preparations for the protest,
news sites reported instances of abuse and
barricades apparently erected by the authorities:
Local news media also documented
other obstacles erected in the streets, saying
the National Guard was stopping demonstrators who were heading from the central part

Rastafarians face Discrimination

in Six Caribbean Islands

By NAN Contributor
News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C.,
he U.S. says there are six Caribbean nations where members of the Rastafarian
faith feel they are being discriminated
against.
Thats according to the latest International Religious Freedom Report for 2015
from the US State Department. While the US
government found the Caribbean is mostly
free when it comes to being able to practice
ones religion, it cited several countries
whether the governments practices impinge
on the beliefs of Rastafarians there. Here are
the six countries cited in the new report:
1: Antigua & Barbuda
In Antigua & Barbuda, the US report says it
has received complaints from The Caribbean
Rastafari Organization that the Antigua &
Barbuda governments prohibition of marijuana contradicts the religious rights of Rastas in the country because marijuana is
integral to their religious rituals. The Rastafarians also say they disagreed with the public
school requirement that children be vaccinated, which they state is against their religious beliefs and they also said the
requirement to remove their headdress for
passport photos and at security checkpoints
was an additional infringement of their religious rights.
2: Jamaica
In Jamaica, Rastafarians complained that elements of their religious observance, such as
wearing dreadlocks and smoking marijuana,
still presented some barriers to their ability to
find employment and achieve professional
status. Some also stated they had had their
hair cut by police or prison officials, and several were exercising legal recourse measures.
Still Rastafarians, however, stated that
such discrimination had diminished considerably in recent years, especially as their
styles of clothing and music gained wider acceptance. In February both houses of parliament In Jamaica, passed a law which ended
the governments longstanding criminalization of marijuana, including for religious pur-

Additionally, representatives locally also
said that prisoners were forced to cut their

4: St. Vincent & The Grenadines
According to the Caribbean Rastafari Organization, Rastafarians in St. Vincent & The

which they described as integral to their religious rituals. Rastafarians here also stated
they faced scrutiny from police and immigration officials and also expressed concern
about discrimination in schools and in hiring.

Among other stipulations, the law permits adherents of the Rastafarian faith to use marijuana for sacramental purposes in locations
registered as places of Rastafarian worship.

3: St. Kitts And Nevis

Rastafarians in Saint Kitts & Nevis say they
continue to face discrimination, in employment as well as in public and private school

They also say they Rastafarians are prohibited use of marijuana, which they described as integral to their religious rituals

5: Dominica
In The Commonwealth of Dominican, Rastafarians also complained about the governments prohibition of marijuana use, which
they described as integral to their religious rituals. Rastafarians also stated they faced extra
scrutiny from police and immigration officials.
6: The Bahamas
In The Bahamas, Rastafarian leaders reported
their members continued to experience police
profiling and targeting due to their belief in
the religious use of marijuana. They also expressed concern that prison officials cut the
dreadlocks of Rastafarian detainees held in
short-term custody, and that prisoners at Bahamas Correctional Services were not regularly provided with meals that met their
religious dietary requirements.

Reggae Boyz bow out

Kingston, Jamaica WI:

anama hammered the last two nails in Jamaica's 2018 World Cup coffin last night.
Goals from Gabriel Torres, and substitute
Abdiel Arroyo handed the hosts a 2-0 win in
Panama City.
It left the Reggae Boyz on four points
from five games and third in CONCACAF
World Cup qualification semi-final round
Group B and no hope of advancing. Panama,
10 points, and group leaders Costa Rica on
13 will move on to final round, where six
teams will compete for three automatic spots
to the next World Cup in Russia.
Jamaica had started well last night and
surprised the Panama defence after just 10
minutes. A Jamaican corner found the head
of a Panama defender then hit the back upright and went into the hands of the very
grateful goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.
The hosts gradually took control and
with some penetrative runs in mid-field from
Alberto Quintero soon had the Boyz on the
backfoot.

It was Quintero who provided the pass

for the opening goal. From a swift counterattack the midfielder found Torres with a perfect defence-splitting pass, and the latter sent
a bullet past Andre Blake in the Jamaican
goal in the 28th minute.
From then on the Panamanians dominated the action, but failed to beat Blake
again until two minutes into injury time. A
mistake in the Jamaican defence gave Blas
Perez the space and the time to pick out substitute Arroyo and the latter rushed into the
18-yard box and shot low and hard past
Blake inside the far post. The goal sent the
Panamanians into wild celebrations.
Jamaica will play their final match of a
disappointing campaign against Haiti at the
National Stadium on Tuesday.
Other results last night: St Vincent 0
USA 6, Honduras 2 Canada 1, Trinidad and
Tobago 2 Guatemala 2, Haiti 0 Costa Rica 1,
El Salvador 1 Mexico 3.

Nail-biting victory for Windies over India

REGIONAL PARK, FLORIDA:

ecords tumbled at the Broward Regional
Park in Florida as West Indies produced
a thrilling one run victory over India in the
first of two Twenty20 Internationals on Saturday. Sent to bat, West Indies recorded the
third best ever T20 total of 245-6.
24 year old Trinidadian Evin Lewis, in
only his second game, became the second
West Indian after Chris Gayle to score a T20
international hundred.
Man-of-the-Match Lewis put on 126 for
the first wicket with Johnson Charles who hit
79 from 33 deliveries. The partnership which
came off just 9.3 overs, laid a strong foundation for the West Indies.

Lewis also added 78 in six overs with Jamaican Andre Russell who got 22 from 12.
Ravindra Jadeja 2-39 and Jasprit Bumrah 247, were the pick of the Indian bowlers. Chasing 246 to win, India stayed on course all the
way through.
They were led by KL Rahul's maiden
century from 46 balls, the second fastest in
T20s. He made 110 not out and along with
Rohit Sharma 62, set a platform for an Indian
win, but with eight to get from the last over,
Dwayne Bravo bowled a beauty to inch the
Caribbean side home in-front of largely Indian support.

Monroe Womens Soccer Looking for Fourth-Straight

National Tournament Appearance this Season:

The Monroe College women's soccer team will be working towards an unprecedented fourthstraight national tournament appearance this year. The team has made the national championship for three straight years, culminating in becoming the National Champions in 2014
and a final four appearance last season. Leading the Mustangs are a talented, deep class of
returners led by All-Region selections Bruna Tavarez and Maia Williams. As freshmen,
Tavarez and Williams combined for 14 goals and 16 assists. Williams was second-best on the
team in both categories. This deep roster of returners, combined with 13 new players, will
help the Mustangs try to reach the final four once again in 2016. The regular season will
open on Tuesday, September 6th, with a home game against Nassau Community College at
6:00 PM.

Lucianos US
visa canceled
Jephter McClymont - Luciano

Kingston, Jamaica WI (Jamaica Observer)

amaican born international entertainer
Lucianos United States visa was cancelled by American law enforcement officers last weekend.
Luciano who was scheduled to perform on the Philadelphia Jerk Festival at
Fairmount Park on Sunday, took to social
media to advise promoters and fans of the
development.
I regret to announce that whilst
crossing the border from Canada into
America by air on August 25th, 2016, I underwent an abnormal interrogation during
which my personal hand luggage was
searched. During the search, a mixture that
I normally use as a herb medicine for my
throat was found and after numerous tests
it was claimed to be illegal because it contained cannabis extracts. The herbal liquid
was a very small amount (less than one
gramme), but as a result my visas were revoked and I was denied entry into the US.
I sincerely regret the inconvenience and
disappointment that this will cause as I am
also deeply devastated. Please pray for me
while I face yet another major obstacle in
my life, Lucianos post read in part.
The singer said he would, however,
appeal the cancellation. Please note that
this will not affect any bookings that I have
in countries anywhere else in the world,
apart from North America. So please keep
the faith... Jah Bless, he continued.
According to tour tracker Pollstar, Luciano had several gigs lined up in California, British Columbia, Washington,
Arizona and Oregon from September 2 to
17.
Another major obstacle in my life
may refer to the March 2009 incident in
which Andrew Senior, a man the police
said was wanted for several murders, engaged police in a shootout at Lucianos
Kingston home.
Senior was killed in the two-hour
stand-off. Three officers were shot and injured.
Luciano was charged with harbouring
a fugitive but was cleared in March 2011.
Another obstacle may be the February 28 slaying of his 19-year-old son,
Menelik McClymont. Three teens are currently before the court for the murder.
The singer (given name Jephter McClymont) is known for spiritual songs including Lord Give Me Strength, Its Me
Again Jah and Sweep Over My Soul.

hese days, just about every hairstyle

seems to be in fashion at once -- long,

Some men wear one style at work
(parted and combed conservatively to the
side) and another (spiked up with styling
gel, for instance) when they go out. No matter how you style your hair, a few products
can help you look your best.
Mens Shampoos
For cleaning, just about any basic
shampoo will do. "There are dozens of
brands with all kinds of things -- like botanicals and antioxidants -- added. But theres
no real evidence that one is better than another," dermatologist Dee Anna Glaser,
MD, says. "If you like the smell and feel of
the shampoo youre using, thats all you
need to care about."

Dandruff Shampoos
A special shampoo is important if you
have dandruff. Not sure if youre a candidate? If combing your hair releases a flurry
of white flakes, you probably need it.
"Dandruff may be an overreaction to
normal yeast found on the skin that leads to
inflammation of the scalp and flaking," dermatologist Carolyn Jacob, MD, says. Dandruff shampoos can quickly relieve the
problem.
Products on the market contain a wide
variety of active ingredients, including ketoconazole, salicylic acid, zinc, selenium
sulfide, and tar. Experts say all of them are
equally effective.
Use a dandruff shampoo three to four
times a week for a month. "If your dandruff
isnt under control, switch to a product with
a different active ingredient," Jacob says.
Make an appointment with your doctor if

flakiness persists. You may need a prescription-strength dandruff shampoo.

Hair Conditioners for Men

Conditioners, like shampoos, come in
a confounding number of formulas. All
work the same way -- by coating your hair
so that its less likely to tangle. Conditioners that promise to add extra body simply
add more coating.
"If you have straight or very short hair,
you probably dont have to use a conditioner at all, or you can get away with using
a combination shampoo/conditioner,"
Glaser says. "But if you have curly, kinky,
or long hair, you may want to take the time
to use a separate conditioner."
Experiment with different brands until
you find one you like. In many cases, inexpensive brands perform just as well as
pricier products.

ROCKAWAY BEACH, QUEENS:

tacey Pheffer Amato, candidate for State
Assembly District 23, continues to build
on her strong credentials as the champion of
working families with her endorsement this
week by both 1199SEIU United Healthcare

In announcing their endorsements, both

fighting for quality healthcare and employment opportunities in communities that have
in recent years seen the devastating closure
of a local hospital.
"We are proud to endorse Stacey Pheffer Amato for New York State Assembly,"
said Helen Schaub, 1199SEIU Vice President for Policy and Legislation. "Stacey's
commitment to ensuring every family receives the best possible healthcare makes her

the clear champion of working New Yorkers

and the values we hold dear. At a time when
healthcare is transforming, she will fight for
access to needed services and high quality
jobs. Stacey will be a powerful voice in Albany for the working people of Queens."
"Stacey Pheffer Amato is the clear

"I am honored to have the endorsement

the right of every Queens family and our
nurses and healthcare workers truly are the

rowing up in the Bronx, Jamaal Bailey

was a typical kid he attended PS 83 in
Morris Park and MS 181 in Co-Op City,
played Little League and spent Sundays with
his extended family at Butler United
Methodist Church.
But Jamaal also dreamed big. He excelled at the Bronx High School of Science,
went on to the University at Albany-SUNY
and interned with the New York State Assembly, where, while assisting with significant
pieces of legislation, he realized one can truly
make a difference by being part of the legislative process.
Jamaal earned his law degree at the
CUNY School of Law and today lives with
his wife, Giamara, and their young daughter
in Baychester, where he continues to live out
the advice of his family- that one can only get
out of their community what they put into it.
Today, in addition to serving as Assembly
Speaker Carl Heasties community relations
director, Jamaal is a member of the Williamsbridge Branch of the NAACP, and mentors
young men at Butler United Methodist
Church, where he remains an active member.
Endorsed by outgoing Senator Ruth
Hassell-Thompson as the best candidate to
represent the 36th District, Jamaal has received the backing of a wide array of elected
officials, labor and community organizations.
If elected, he will be representing Mount Vernon as well as our neighbors in the Bronx.

Leftover Lingerie Still Lingers

in Boyfriend's Dresser Drawers

18 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER AUGUST 1-18, 2016

Dear Divine Diva:

have been seeing my boyfriend for
five months. He still has some of
his ex-girlfriend's lingerie in his
dresser. When we first got involved,
he showed it to me and asked if I
wanted any. I said no thanks.
Now that I'm more invested in
the relationship, I'd like him to get rid
of it. He is currently out of town,
traveling for a month. Would it be inappropriate for me to throw away
these "trinkets" without consulting
him?
-Setting boundaries, Mount Vernon

Dear Setting Boundaries:

es, I think it would be inappropriate. Although your boyfriend
will probably tell you to go ahead and
get rid of it if it bothers you, it would
be more respectful if you clear it with
him first. Always Divine Diva

Boyfriend Shies Away

From Face-to-to-Face Meetings

Dear Divine Diva:

met a guy online. We have been dating for some time now. We have a
wonderful connection and have our
dates on Skype. The problem is, we
have never met in person.
Every time we plan on meeting, he
shuts up for a time, isn't reachable, then
suddenly reappears and makes excuses,
asking me to forgive him and plan another meeting. Should I still believe this
will happen anytime soon? -- left hanging in white plains ny

Dear left hanging:

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings,
but something smells fishy here. "Cat
fishy." From where I sit, it appears your
wonderful connection may be only your
connection to the Internet. A person
who does this repeatedly may not be
who he has represented himself to be.
Do not count on him for anything.Always Divine Diva

list of your plans for the next day. You may
not be able to complete the list so add it on to

most important to least important.
A short health tip is working on eliminating gradually a diet of inflammatory foods. Be
observant when grocery shopping to read the

which research has shown to cause illnesses
like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and

commercially fried foods, etc.
Replace with monounsaturated fats such
as canola oil, olive oil, avocado for example.
Also replace with polyunsaturated fats found

4 Essential Strategies for Growing Your Business

Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

FAMILY FEATURES:
ince opening its first store in 1986, the
foundation of Mattress Firms success has
been built on a commitment to its core values:
service, integrity and passion. Now, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, a threedecade journey has seen it grow from a single
Houston store to 3,500 stores in 48 states. The
following strategies can help grow the success of your business, too.
Be deeply connected and highly visible. Sophisticated product knowledge, meticulous financial measurements and high-level
strategic planning are essential skills for
every business leader. However, successful
managers put just as much emphasis on getting to know people as they do learning markets and numbers. Building relationships with
your customers, your community and your industry is essential to understanding how to
serve their needs. Strong personal connections between team members and management; the company and the community; and
retailers and business partners are the keys
to the success of any business.
Be bold. A bold vision to revolutionize
the sleep industry became a reality when the
doors to the first Mattress Firm store opened
July 4, 1986 in Houston. The founders, Steve
Fendrich, Harry Roberts and Paul Stork,
didnt know at the time that a single store
would grow into a publicly traded company
with 10,000 employees nationwide, but they
believed in their vision and their values.
Plans written down on paper are great
they are used all the time to evaluate new
markets and consider future opportunities, for

members, they will trust you. If you build a

culture of clarity, accountability and respect,
you will become an employer of choice that
attracts, retains and develops top talent.
Mattress Firms founders dreamed big in
1986. They opened a store, but more importantly, they had a vision to improve lives
through a better nights sleep. Every day since
then, passion, culture and community, combined with the willingness to do the hard
work necessary to get the job done, has made
that dream come to fruition.

example but real leadership requires more

than just a strategic plan; it takes boldness and
the courage to act decisively on not only datadriven insights, but the knowledge that
youve gained from your relationships in your
industry and community.
Be passionate. It is essential for leaders
to be passionate about their business for two
reasons. First, customers respond best to
someone who shows that they genuinely care
about solving the problem that their product
is intended to solve.
Second, your passion will carry you
through the inevitable setbacks along your
way to success. Ask how your company helps
your customers, then use that answer as inspiration when times get tough.

One of the most important things a leader can
do is develop the next generation of leaders
to ensure the ongoing success of the organization. This requires confidence on your part,
as you cannot feel threatened by new ideas
and new talent that are the natural result of
cultivating a successful team.
The emphasis on inclusiveness and collaboration will trickle down through a companys culture, creating an environment
where all team members feel empowered to
share both ideas and concerns in the spirit of
constant improvement. Companies such as
Mattress Firm foster a positive sense of discontent, feeling pride for far theyve come,
but always looking for ways to improve the
customer experience. If you trust your team
