MASS HAUL DIAGRAM

Eartwork volumes determination

 From all cross-sections (including the exemplary crosssection)
 Divide the area of one cross-section (scale 1:100; the
exemplary cross-section 1:50 watch out !!!) into
trapezoids (rotated by 90) with a height 1 m 1 cm in
the cross-section
 Consider areas separately (refer to fig. 0790):
N.....embankments (without the pavement + humus
layer removal included)
V .....excavations (with the pavement + without humus
layer removal)

fig. 0790 (the division of cross-section for earthwork volumes

determination)
vi .....central base of i-th trapezoid
z .....height of i-th trapezoid (z = 1m)
Area of i-th trapezoid:

Embankment area:
b

FN = v i
i=a

Fi = v i z
Fi = v i 1
Fi = v i
Excavation (cut) area:
d

FZ = v i
i=c

a .....first embankment trapezoid in cross-section

b .....last embankment trapezoid in cross-section
c .....first cut trapezoid in cross-section
d .....last cut trapezoid in cross-section
 beware of the exemplary cross-section ignore 1:50
scale FN (or FZ) divide by 4 !!!

MASS HAUL TABLE CALCULATION

j .............. cross-section number
FN,j [m2] ... cross-section area number j (part for
embankment)
FZ,j [m2] ... cross-section area number j (part for cut)
lp,j/2 [m] ... half of the distance between cross-sections j
and j+1
KN [m3] .... embankment earthwork volume between crosssections j and j+1
KZ [m3] .... cut earthwork volume between cross-sections
j and j+1
PPj [m3] ... cross-spread between cross-sections j and
j+1

Zj [m3] ..... extra excavation between cross-sections j and

j+1
Nj [m3] ..... missing embankment between cross-sections
j and j+1
Hj [m3] ..... mass haul ordinate at place of cross-section j
Procedure for filling and calculating (for example refer to
fig. 0798 and see header in fig. 0800)

fig. 0798 (mass haul table)

 Column 1 ordinate number j fill in for all crosssections plotted on the route (including the exemplary
cross-section)
 Column 2 chaining copy for all cross-sections from
written longitudinal profile

fig. 0800 (mass haul table header)

 Column 3 embankment area FN,j fill in and
calculate for each cross-section j according to the
principle in fig. 0790 any by the formula
b

FN, j = v i
i=a

a .....first embankment trapezoid in cross-section

b .....last embankment trapezoid in cross-section
 Column 4 excavation area FZ,j fill in and calculate
for each cross-section j according to the principle in fig.
0790 and by formula
d

FZ , j = v i
i=c

c .....fist cut trapezoid in cross-section

d .....last cut trapezoid in cross-section
 Column 5 sum of the areas (embankment) ...FN, j + FN, j+1

 Column 6 sum of the areas (cut) ........ FZ , j + FZ , j+1

 Column 7 half of the distance of two cross-sections
lp,j/2 obtain from longitudinal profile (fig. 0610)

fig. 0610 (longitudinal profile the lower part with crosssection marking)
 Column 8 earthwork volumes (embankment KN,j):
lp, j (FN, j + FN, j+1 )
K N, j =
2
 Column 9 earthwork volumes (excavation KZ,j):
lp, j (FZ , j + FZ , j+1 )
K Z,j =
2
 Column 10 cross-spread ................. PPj = min (KZ,j; KN,j)
 Column 11 extra excavation .................... Zj = KZ,j PPj
 Column 12 missing embankment ............. Nj = KN,j PPj
 Column 13 or 14 mass haul ordinate quantify for
each cross-section j:
H1 = 0

Hj = Hj-1 + Zj-1 Nj-1

MASS HAUL DIAGRAM PLOTTING
 Prefer computer or graph paper (cover entire A4)
 plot the axis (fig. 0810):
horizontal (into the middle) chaining [km]
vertical (to both sides) mass haul ordinate Hj [m3]
(choose scale so extremes Hj fit both positive and
negative)

fig. 0810 (mass haul diagram example of plot)

 plot points with coordinates [cross-section chaining j;
Hj]
 coonect points with lines according to the chaining
 establish equalizing lines (, , , ) and their axis
(according to the example in fig. 0810)
1. part store branch:

 .......... point H1
 .......... point H4
L1-2 [m] ... measure
Q1-2 = H4 H1 [m3]
2. part consumption branch:
 .......... point H1
 .......... point H9
L1-3 [m] ... measure (L1-3) + add about 500m for the
arrival from the borrow pit
Q1-3 = H1 H9 [m3]
3. part supply branch:
 .......... point H9
 .......... point H6
L3-4 [m] ... measure
Q3-4 = H6 H9 [m3]
Determining of mean distribution distance:
(Qi li )
lst = i
[m]
Qi
i

if store branch accumulates (growing) remaining soil

goes into deponium
if consumption branch accumulates (decreasing)
missing soil is obtained from borrow pit
distance of deponium / borrow pit is about 500 m from the
end of the road
