CFD Assignment: Laminar Pipe Flow

The diameter and length of a circular pipe are 0.2 m and 14 m, respectively. Assume the fluid flow in
pipe has density of 1.12 kg/m and viscosity of 2.5 x 10 kg/(ms). Set the inlet velocity to 3 m/s
(constant over the inlet cross-section) and the residuals for all equations to 1e-6. Set the calculations to
1000 iterations.
a) Determine the Reynolds number of the flow. Is the flow laminar or turbulent?
b) Run the simulation with two mesh sizes, 1405 elements (140 elements in the axial direction
and 5 elements in the radial direction) and 70020 (700 elements in the axial direction and 20
elements in the radial direction). Compare the outlet maximum velocity between the simulated
results of both mesh sizes and theoretical calculation. Recommend and use only the grid size
with lower percentage difference to answer the following questions.
c) Plot the centerline velocity distributions (Solution XY Plot). Discuss the changes in the
centerline velocity from inlet to outlet.
d) Draw one vertical line at developing region and another vertical line at developed region
(Line/Rake Surface). Plot the velocity profile (Solution XY Plot) for these lines and discuss on
the changes.
e) Show the velocity contour plots and discuss the growth of the boundary layers.
f) Compare and discuss the simulated entry length with the theoretical values.
g) Run the simulations for inlet velocities of 2.5, 3.5 and 4 m/s. Discuss the influences of inlet
velocity on the entry length.
