COMP2102 Windows Service Administration

Unit #2: Working with Windows Deployment Services

Install Windows Deployment Services (WDS)

Configure Windows Deployment Services (WDS)
Add Boot and Install images to Windows Deployment Services

Pre-Lab Setup (NOTE THIS FIRST HANDS ON LAB WILL SET UP OUR ENVIRONMENT
FOR SUBSEQUENT LABS)
Note: - You will only need your virtual Windows 2008 R2 server for this lab assignment.
Since we will need our server to be part of an Active Directory domain we will first install Active
Directory Domain Services on our server (Note you would not likely install WDS on a
Domain controller but we will have our server perform both roles just to simplify our lab
setup)
Please see the document titled COMP2102 Install Active Directory for Lab Environment
for step-by-step instructions and complete before proceeding with the following activities.
Procedure using the Activity instructions from your textbook Complete Activity 2-1: Install WDS from Server Manager
-

once completed in Server Manager, expand the Roles node in the left pane, and
then click on Windows Deployment Services to display the WDS details. Take a
screenshot and insert in this document here.

Complete Activity 2-2: Configure Windows Deployment Services

-

once completed Take a screenshot of the completed Windows Deployment Services

window, and insert in this document here.

Complete Activity 2-3: Add a Boot Image, with the following exceptions
-

you will find the boot.wim file from the Server 2008 DVD in the directory D:\Sources
( you can mount the ISO image that you used to install server and treat it like a
physical DVD )
once completed Take a screenshot of the completed Windows Deployment Services
window showing the boot image in the right-hand pane, and insert in this document
here.

Complete Activity 2-4: Add an Install Image, with the following exceptions
-

in Step 6. Select only the first OS image (named Windows Longhorn

SERVERSTANDARD) in order to preserve space in Lab Manager
once completed Take a screenshot of the completed Windows Deployment Services
window showing the install image in the right-hand pane, and insert in this document
here.

Progress Check Questions

As you complete the lab, answer the following questions.
1) What are the prerequisites for installing Windows Deployment Services?
The prerequisites for installing Windows Deployment Services is that networking components
such as Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), DNS and DHCP should be up and working.
2) What server components are needed to boot the client system and install an operating
system to that client using WDS?
1. Active Directory and DNS server in place. The computer running WDS must be a member of an
Active Directory.
2. An active DHCP server on the network
3. An NTFS partition on the server with the WDS role to store your OS images.
3) Name and describe the different types of images that are used with WDS.
1. Install Image: It stores the operating system that will be installed. It has .wim extension and it
can be located in /sources folder in windows server 2008 DVD.
2. Boot Image: It holds the minimal operating system that is sent to the client when it first
connects to the WDS server. It can also be located in /sources folder in DVD installation media.
4) Name and describe the different types of images that are used with WDS.
1. Capture Image: It is created by WDS to capture an existing image and store it for later
deployment.
2. Boot Image: client computers will boot into boot image in order to install the operating
system
3. Install image: Install images is deployed to the client computer
4. Discover Image: It enables operating system installation on server that cannot boot
from network using pre-boot execution evvironment.
Discussion Questions
1) In your own words, describe what you learned by completing this lab.
I learned about WDS and installing of wds.
2) Briefly describe, in your own words, the benefits of using WDS.
It allows network based installation of windows operating system and it also transmits data and
images by using multicast functionality.
