Teaching Experience

Graduate Courses in Rhetoric and Composition

English 505: Teaching Introductory Composition

Purdue University: Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017

The purpose of this course is to prepare incoming instructors to teach writing at the university
level. The course focuses primarily on teaching composition at Purdue University; however, the course
also discusses the teaching of writing throughout the curriculum and the role of writing instruction
inside and outside of the university.

Undergraduate Courses in Professional Writing

English 419: Multimedia Writing: Rhetoric in Motion

Purdue University: Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016

This course focuses on the rhetoric of motion in the design of multimedia. Students will learn to
analyze, interpret, and question digital media that utilize animated motion, including videos, gifs,
interfaces, and data visualizations. Students also design artifacts of their own by completing two case
studies: one focused on promoting local events in the area and one focused on a public health issue.

English 421: Technical Writing

Purdue University: Fall 2014, Spring 2015, Summer 2015

This course focuses on recognizing the rhetorical situations that one may encounter in a technical
workplace, including writing to supervisors, management, peers, and different publics. The main
assignments for the class challenge students to construct two documents that are on a similar
technical subject, but composed for completely different audiences.

English 421y: Technical Writing Online

Purdue University: Fall 2016

In this class students work toward many of the same goals as a face-to-face section of technical
writing. Students create job documents, two technical descriptions, and two technical instructions in
order to practice skills in information design and audience analysis. The online version of the course
includes more discussions of telecommunication and multimedia forms of technical writing.

English 420: Business Writing

Purdue University: Fall 2013, Spring 2014

Students apply principles in document design to a wide range of written materials, including
professional reports, presentations, and application materials. Projects, such as the white paper, provide
students with only a rough situational framework, pressing students to ask questions, develop theories,
and to draw on prior knowledge in order to write in unfamiliar genres.

Undergraduate Courses in Rhetoric and Composition

English 106: Introductory Composition (Digital Rhetorics)

Purdue University: Fall 2013, Spring 2014

In this course students consider the history of various writing technologies and the way writing
technologies connect with specific historical moments. Students work in groups to trace the history
of one genre (e.g. war stories) through the lenses of rhetoric and technology. Students write a research
paper, design a professional handout, and build a website, all to connect historical discussions of
writing technologies to their own practices.

English 106: Introductory Composition (Writing About Writing)

Purdue University: Fall 2012, Spring 2013

This course encourages students to draw on interview data, ethnographic research, and prior

knowledge in order to contribute to ongoing discussions about writing and literacy. Throughout

the class, students are asked to expand their notions of literacy to their personal lives and professional
trajectories..

English 103: Accelerated Composition (Sports, Media, and Gaming)

Clemson University: Fall 2011, Spring 2012

Through critical engagement with themes of literacy, identity, and representation, students developed
skills in argumentation, information design, research, and collaboration. In addition to a focus on
rhetorical analysis, this class included a multimodal component focused on the fundamentals of video
production.
