New input grid

The input grid has been completely rewritten in V9, making it much faster than in EDR V8.8.
The new input grid contains all of the functionality in V8.8. An example is shown below (Hot
Stream Propeties):

The first liquid density cell above is selected. Click on a row or column header to select the
entire row or column. Click in the upper left (red arrow above) to select all cells. For
comparison, here is the same grid in V8.8:

Footer added to results printing

Add up to six lines in a footer to appear at the bottom of every page of the printed reports by
going to File | Print and entering the desired text in the textbox in the Page Footer section.
When the Print Footer checkbox is checked, the footer text will be printed.

Panning available in zoomed diagrams

All EDR equipment diagrams (Setting Plan and Tubesheet Layout, for example) now display
scrollbars when the diagram is zoomed. This allows panning over the diagram while keeping
the same magnification.

EDR Import from Simulators

Match simulator stream names when importing
When importing an Aspen Plus or HYSYS case into an EDR case that already has stream
names specified, an attempt will be made to match up the names. By default, the stream will
be imported to the existing stream with that name.

Specify default number of property points to import

The default number of property points imported from a simulator case can be specified by
going to File | Options | General and modifying the Default number of property points for
import.

Modifying this input will change the default Number Of Points in the Exchangers window.

For more information and details about these enhancements, see below:

3D plots for X and K shells

3D versions of the existing Analysis along Shell and Analysis along Tubes plots have been
added to the results for X and K shells. You can find them at Results| Calculation Details |
Analysis along Shell | 3D plots and Results | Calculation Details | Analysis along Tubes | 3D
Plots.

Improvement to property evaluation

Improvements have been made to the physical properties calculations for two-phase cases
and cases with duplicate property points to provide more consistent property checking and
more accurate results.

More accurate results when Wolverine tubes are used in laminar region
Wolverine correlations for corrugated tubes are only validated for Reynolds number (Re)
higher than 10000. It was experimentally reported that there was no improvement in the heat
transfer coefficient (htc) at very low Re (lower than 20). The correlations have been updated
to reflect this, using plain tube correlations at Re < 20 and interpolating between plain
correlations and Wolverine correlations for 20 < Re < 10000.

More accurate area calculation for tube-in-plate fins

A more accurate heat transfer area calculation is provided when a tube-in-plate fin is
selected.

More accurate impingement plate effect on rho-V-2 calculation at the

bundle entrance when a dome nozzle selected
When a dome nozzle is selected, changes have been made in order to more accurately
calculate rho-V-2 at the bundle entrance if the impingement plate is close to tube bundle

Added a clear description for flow types

The labels for shell side flow fractions in the Flow Analysis tab in the results have been
modified to provide more detail about the flow types. More information about the different
streams is available in the help along with images showing where the flows are.

Improved warnings

Change the warning to an Error, for inappropriate SS nozzle location to prevent shell
flooding in condensation process

Do not allow separate L&V nozzles when a floating rear head is selected for falling film
evaporator

Issue a warning message if the area ratio is not 1 in the simulation mode

Improved tube side pressure drop distribution table (CQ00522603)

The AirCooled calculates the local tube side pressure drops more rigorously than the default
Shell & Tube method and other software. The improved tube side pressure drop distribution
table would provide a consistent pressure drop distribution table to Aspen Shell & Tube
program, and thus allow the users to better understand the pressure changes from friction
loss, momentum changes and gravitational change.
The following shows the new tube side pressure drop distribution table.

Add the Exchanger Only menu option in the setting plan diagram
(CQ00390322)

The following shows the new context menu option for selecing Exchanger Only to display
exchanger only in the setting plan diagram.

Add tube-in-plate as a new option in the tube surface enhancement type

(CQ00456300)
Tube-in-plate as tube surface enhancement for convection banks has been used for heat
recovery of flue gas in fired heaters. The addition of tube-in-plate as possible tube surface
enhancement provides the users the ability to select the proper fin tube type used in
convection banks. The PFR 1976 method that is an open-literature correlation and
documented in HTFS ZM1 and ZM2, is used to calculate heat transfer and pressure drop in
crossflow over tube bundles.
The following shows the option for selecting tube-in-plate as the tube surface enhancement
type.

Add tube pass layout with options of interspersed layout and separated
layout (CQ00537298)
The capability to specify, draw and model separated and interspersed tube pass layout
used in the firebox was available in FIHR program, but it is has been missing in Aspen Fired
Heater program. This feature is added back to this release. It allows the users to select the
tube pass layout of interspersed layout or separated layout for a cabin firebox with multiple
passes per tube line, or a cylindrical firebox with multiple passes. The program would also

calculate the thermal/hydraulic performance and draw the firebox diagram based on the
selected tube pass layout.
The following shows the tube pass layout option for selecting interspersed layout.

Add API process, combustion and mechanical datasheets (CQ00364722)

In version V9.0 consolidated API 560 process, combustion and mechanical datasheets are
available in Results Summary folder. The consolidated information includes the data available
Aspen Fired Heater inputs and outputs. This feature provides the users an alternative way to
review the result summary. The following shows the API process datasheet.

Compatibility Notes for V9

Aspen Fired Heater V9.0 can be installed and used at the same time as V8.8.2 and other
previous versions of Aspen Fired Heater.
FiredHeater is compatibility with all versions of Aspen Properties. No further action is required
if Aspen Properties V7.3 (installed automatically with V7.3.2 of EDR), V7.2 or V7.1 is
registered. If another version of Aspen Properties is registered, compatible versions of
FlueGasxx.x.aprpdf and Steamxx.x.aprpdf should be placed in the <EDR>/Dat/Props folder.
These are generated by opening FlueGas.aprbkp and Steam.aprbkp and exporting the above
aprpdf files with the version number included in the name (i.e. xx.x = 25.0, 26.0 ).

Aspen Plate Exchanger

The following new features and enhancements were added in release V9:

Add API datasheet to the result summary and to be exported to Excel template and Word
document

Annual exchanger cost estimation update.

Add API datasheet (CQ00321349)

A consolidated API process and mechanical datasheet is available in Results Summary
folder. The consolidated information includes the data available Aspen Plate inputs and
outputs. This feature provides the users a great way to review the result summary. The
following shows the API datasheet.

The results in the API datasheet can be exported to a Word document or to a specified Excel
template. The Excel template (PlateAPISheet.xltm) includes Process and Mechanical work
sheets with identical format to standard API data sheets.

Exchanger cost estimation update (CQ00511803)

In version V9, the Plate Exchanger costs are updated using the data from the Aspen
Economic Evaluation material cost update. Material costs are typically updated near the end
of each year.

Compatibility Notes for V9

Aspen Plate Exchanger V9.0 can be installed and used at the same time as V8.8.2 and other
previous versions of Aspen Plate Exchanger.
