PROJECT BASED LEARNING ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Objective
To research, design and build a rocket using a 2 liter soda bottle.

Goals
Your team will need to create a rocket that can can carry your Eggonaut (a raw egg) as high as possible into the sky and return your
Eggonaut safely to the ground

Project Requirements
One 36: x 24 Presentation Drawing (Shows detail drawings of all parts needed to build the rocket drawn in 2:1 scale, an exploded
assembly of your rocket with all parts labeled, a final assembly of the rocket, and a parts schedule)
An assembled rocket that has been decorated and is ready to fly.
Bid Binder (This is a binder that contains, All research and analysis, Narratives, Reports and Calculations)

Phase 1: Research and Presentation

Your team will need to conduct thorough research about rocket. You must compile your research notes for your Bid Binder.
Your research must include information regarding:
The physics related to rocket flight.
How a rocket maintains stability during flight.
The parts of a rocket.
How can the payload (Eggonaut) be safely returned to the ground?
Your presentation should outline your research and show that your team understand all of the things they need to know in order to
build a successful rocket. Print out your presentation and keep it in your bid binder.
Due Date: Friday August 20th

Phase 2: Brainstorming/Process Drawings

Your team will need to produce a set of sketches and notes relating to how you think you might go about designing your rocket.
Sketches should include: (At least 3 variations of each)

Overall rocket design

Individual parts of the rocket

The compartment for your Eggonaut

Make sure to include possible dimensions

PROJECT BASED LEARNING ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

All sketches should be done using the proper sketching techniques and kept in presentation condition.
You will be using the app CamScanner to add them to your ePortfolio.

Phase 3: Process Model

You will need to build a process model of your rocket using nothing more than a 2 liter bottle and paper to figure out what will and
will not work. Your process model must include

All parts that you plan on designing and building attached to the model. (They will not be perfect, just a template to make
sure your ideas work.)

A mockup of your Eggonauts capsule that an Eggonaut can be placed in to to check for proper fit

Phase 4: Budget
For the budget phase you will need to come up with a detailed budget that outlines the overall cost of constructing your final rocket.
Determine what materials you will be using and research the cost of those materials. Failure to have a detailed budget will result in a
loss of a minimum of 20% of the project grade

Phase 5: Digital Modeling

Your team will need to design all parts of your rocket in detail using SolidWorks. As a team you will need to coordinate your efforts
to ensure that everything matches up. You will need to model the 2 liter bottle as well. You must include the following drawings

Detail drawing of all parts including orthographic views as well as an isometric view. (orthos should be in hidden line
format, isos should be shaded with edges.)

Section view/s of the Eggonaut capsule.

An exploded assembly of the rocket

A final assembly of the rocket in both ortho and iso views.

These will all be laid out on a 36 x 24 sheet with title block.

Phase 6: Rocket Construction

You must now fabricate and assemble all parts of your rocket in preparation for launch.

Phase 7: Testing
The final stage of the project will be to launch your rocket and see if your design was successful. A rubric will be provided soon.
