Basic Chemistry Revision

Basic concepts: Revision

Oxidation Reduction
Thermodynamics

Define
1. Oxidation and Reduction
2. Acid Base Reaction
3. What does it mean for a reaction to be
exotherm?
4. What do you know about entropy?

Galvanic Cell
8. Write the balanced net ionic equation, and
calculate Eo for the following galvanic cell: Al
(s) and Cu (s)
The half-reactions and their standard reduction
potentials are:
- Al3+ (aq) + 3 e- Al (s)
Eo = - 1,66V
- Cu2+ (aq) + 2 e- Cu (s) Eo = +0,34 V

Nernst?
9. Calculate the equilibrium constants for the
reaction involving copper and tin (solid and
ionic) using the standard reduction potential
table
EoCu2+/Cu = 0,34 V
EoSn2+/Sn=-0,14 V
Note:
-RT ln K = -nFEo
F = 96500 Coulomb/mol
R = 8.314 J/mol

Introduction to spontaneity

What physical things happen around

you spontaneously?

Discuss
What are their characteristics?

Messy is spontaneous

Disorder is fate

What about chemical disorder?

Why is the concept of spontaneity

important?

Iron Corrosion

Redox spontaneous
in room temperature

Spontaneity
A spontaneous change is any change that
happens freely in time without intervention.
It is important to know how a reaction can
occur spontaneously to avoid /make the
reaction occur?
What are the conditions for a reaction to take
place spontaneously?

QUESTIONS?

Using Standard Reduction Potentials

The half-reactions and their cell potentials are:
Al3+ (aq) + 3 e- Al (s)
Eo = - 1,66V
Cu2+ (aq) + 2 e- Cu (s) Eo = +0,34 V
Eo Al < Cu, therefore:
Al (s) undergoes oxidation
Cu (s) undergoes reduction
2Al (s) + 3Cu2+ (aq) 2Al3+ (aq) + 3Cu (s)
E total = (0,34) - (- 1,66) = 2 V

Sn(s) + Cu2+ (aq) Cu (s)+ Sn2+

Eo = 0,34-(-0,14) = 0,48 V

-RT ln K = -nFEo
Ln K = nFEo/RT
= 2 *96500 Coulomb/mol*0,48 V/8,314 J/mol
K*298 K = 37
K= 1,7 * 1016
