9. Canadas British Columbia becomes first foreign government to issue
masala bonds
Explanation: Canadas British Columbia province has become the first foreign
government to issue of masala bonds, a rupee-denominated bond. It had issued Rs 500
crore rupee denominated overseas bonds (masala bond) on the London Stock Exchange
(LSE) and successfully raised $75 million (about Rs 500 crore). British Columbias issued
masala bond was priced to yield 6.62 % to semi-annually with a three-year tenor in the
LSE. By issuing masala bond, it has secured high-quality investor support from across
Europe, Asia and America

Japan cabinet approves economic stimulus package worth $275 billion

Explanation: Japans cabinet has approved an economic stimulus package worth 275
billion dollars in attempt kick-start the economy and boost growth of the worlds thirdlargest economy. Decision in this regard was Japanese Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. The Japanese government expects that this package will
boost gross domestic product (GDP) by 1.3%.
11. Four Indian-Americans honored with 2016 Great Immigrants Award in US

Explanation: Four Indian-Americans have been honored with prestigious Great


Immigrants: The Pride of America Award 2016. They are among 42 distinguished US
personalities representing more than 30 countries of origin around the world honored
with this years award. All of these personalities represent a wide range of personal

immigration stories, and inspiring professional accomplishments. Four Indian-Americans


are
Sunder Pichai: He is CEO of internet search engine giant Google.
Hari Sreenivasan: He is broadcast journalist associated with the PBS News Hour.
Vikram Malhotra: He is associated with McKinsey.
Bharati Mukherjee: She is professor emerita in the department of English at the
University of California, Berkeley.

12. India Sign Deal to buy Poseidon Aircraft


Explanation: India has signed a one-billion dollar deal with Boeing for procuring four
long-range maritime surveillance & anti-submarine warfare aircraft, Poseidon-8I. The
acquisition will be enhancement of the Indian Navy as the country has been building up
its naval surveillance capabilities. The contract is a follow-on order to eight P-81 planes
already bought by India in a direct deal with the firm.
