Trump to address Values Voter Summit, while Kaine speaks to HRC

By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com

DONALD TRUMP is set to speak to the Values Voter

Summit on Saturday, while Sen. Tim Kaine addresses
HRC in the evening.

The contrast between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on LGBT rights already made apparent over the
course of the campaign will reach new heights as a result of two events slated for D.C. this weekend.
On Friday, Donald Trump is set to address the Values Voter Summit, an annual D.C. convention hosted by the
anti-LGBT Family Research Council. And on Saturday, Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.)
along with civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) is set to address the annual Human Rights Campaign
National Dinner.
The Republican presidential nominee will demonstrate his commitment to social conservatives seeking to
undermine LGBT rights, while the Democratic vice presidential nominee will address a largely LGBT audience
seeking to advance and protect those rights.
What either candidate will say remains to be seen. Much like Hillary Clinton or Vice President Joseph Biden on
the day of last years HRCdinner, Kaine might discuss his support for the Equality Act, undoing the dishonorable
discharges of U.S. troops discharged for being gay or barring widely discredited ex-gay conversion therapy.
(Clinton spoke last year at a separate event hosted by the Human Rights Campaign earlier in the day before Biden
delivered the keynote speech at the dinner.)

FBI arrests Fla. man after he issues

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

A man who posted messages on Facebook last week
threatening to carry out a Pulse nightclub-type shooting
against LGBT people on Labor Day in the gay enclave of
Wilton Manors, Fla., was arrested by the FBI in Orlando on
federal charges of making threats to injure people.
Craig Allen Jungwirth, 50, who had been promoting a
gay event in Wilton Manors and nearby Fort Lauderdale

known as Beach Bear Weekend, was initially arrested

on Saturday, Sept. 3, by the Florida Highway Patrol in
Osceola County, Fla. near Orlando on an unrelated
charge of driving with a suspended license, according to
Orlando police.
An arrest adavit released by the FBI the following day
says FBI agents arrested Jungworth on a federal charge
of making threatening communications after his arrest
for driving without a valid license. The adavit says the
FBI arrest followed a joint investigation by the FBI and the
Wilton Manors Police Department into Jungwirths alleged
threats.

and FEMA is activated, CNCS and FEMA sign a
mission assignment agreement that allows us
at AmeriCorps to send our wonderful AmeriCorps members who do all sorts of
service for people including: mucking and gutting homes, debris removal, setting
up of Volunteer Recruitment Centers, stang food banks, sheltering people,
etc.As the Cadre member I deploy to FEMA to coordinate all our members. Its
a pretty big assignment involving 12-hour days and lots of trouble shooting.
Other deployments have included in 2013 helping Alaska ood victims on the
Yukon and in 2015 helping people recover after ooding in South Carolina.
Barutta is from California but D.C. has been his home for the past 22 years. After

Gun control advocates stage a die-in outside the Rayburn House Oce Building on Sept. 6.

Gun control supporters

protest on Capitol Hill
Congress returned from
summer recess this week
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
More than a dozen gun control
supporters took part in a protest on
Capitol Hill on Tuesday.
Members of the D.C. chapter of Gays
Against Guns, Code Pink and WERK for
Peace were dancing to music as they
marched around the Cannon, Longworth
and Rayburn House Oce Buildings on
Independence Avenue. They also staged
die-ins on the steps of the Rayburn
House Oce Building and in front of the
U.S. Supreme Court.
Three members of Gays Against Guns
wearing white marched silently while
holding posters that contained the names
and pictures of victims of gun violence.
These include Deeniquia Dodds, a black
transgender woman who died in July after
she was shot in the neck in Northeast
Washington.
Congress returned from its summer
recess on Tuesday.
Activists earlier in the day placed pink
iers from the Brady Campaign to Prevent
Gun Violence on the doors of lawmakers
oces highlighting those who died from
gun violence during the recess. People
who were inside the Longworth House
Oce Building watched the protesters
from windows as they marched on C
Street, S.E.
Were out here to send a strong
message to Congress: Welcome back, do
your jobs, Phil Attey, co-founder of the
D.C. chapter of Gays Against Guns, told
the Washington Blade.
Mandy Toomey of Moms Demand
Action, a group that formed in response
to the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook
Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.,
that left 20 students and six staers dead,
echoed Attey.

Its time to get to work, Toomey told

the Blade. Theres so much to be done
in the areas of gun violence prevention.
Were just seeing an increase every day.
Tuesdays protest took place nearly
three months after a gunman killed 49
people and injured 53 others inside the
Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
Firas Nasr of WERK for Peace began the
protest with a moment of silence in honor
of the victims of the massacre that is the
deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Nasr told the Blade the Pulse
nightclub shooting was the biggest
impetus behind the protest, although
he noted the movement for gun control
included LGBT people before the June
12 massacre. Nasr added he and others
who took part in Tuesdays protest
also support the Black Lives Matter
movement and eorts to close loopholes
allow for people to get guns without
background checks.
Orlando was the nal straw for us to
really come out and say this is wrong, he
said.
Attey specically criticized U.S. Sen.
Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who announced
his re-election campaign after the Pulse
nightclub massacre.
Rubio sparked outrage last month
when he delivered the keynote address at
an anti-LGBT conference that took place
at an Orlando hotel two months after
the massacre. The former Republican
presidential candidate will face U.S. Rep.
Patrick Murphy (D-Fla.) in the general
election.
Attey accused Rubio of spitting on
the graves of the 49 people who died at
Pulse.
If the voters of Florida care about what
happened at Pulse and they care about
the safety of their kids, whether theyre
LGBT or not, the choice in this election is
clear, Attey told the Blade. You cannot
vote for Marco Rubio. You have to vote
for Patrick Murphy.

Murder trial for D.C. trans activist

set for Sept. 13
A contingent of transgender activists from the D.C. area was expected to appear
in Prince Georges County Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro on Sept. 13 for the
opening day of the murder trial of veteran D.C. transgender activist Gigi Thomas.
Friends and associates of Thomas say they believe she has been unfairly charged
with rst-degree murder in connection with the October 2015 stabbing death of
Devale Lamont Avery, 47. Police found Avery suering from fatal stab wounds
inside Thomass residence in Temple Hills, Md., according to a police arrest adavit.
One of Thomass friends, who spoke on condition of not being identied, said
supporters believe Thomas stabbed Avery, an estranged friend of hers, in selfdefense after he attempted to rob and assault her.
The basic outline is the backdrop of black transgender women being killed in
large numbers across the country because of their gender identity, the friend
said. Gigi knew about that as an activist and she fought back.
The police arrest adavit says police responded to the scene after being
called and found Avery, a Fort Washington resident, suering from multiple stab
wounds to the upper body. It says Avery was pronounced dead on the scene.
It also says Thomas waived her Miranda rights and admitted involvement in
the murder of Devale Lamont Avery.
Thomass attorney, David Simpson, didnt respond to calls from the Blade
seeking comment on Thomass behalf.
Cyndee Clay, executive director of the D.C. sex workers rights and social
services group HIPS, said Thomas served as a client advocate for the group from
2002 to 2009, when she left the group to begin studies for a masters degree in
social work at Howard University. Clay said she attended Thomass graduation.
Were all kind of in shock and were very concerned, said Clay at the time of
Thomass arrest. This is not something we would expect at all.

LGBT Asian groups to stage protests

The National Queer Asian Pacic Islander Alliance and the LGBT South Asian group KhushDC
plan to stage a series of checkpoints in several D.C. neighborhoods on Sunday, Sept. 11, to
protest what they say is discriminatory proling against them by the U.S. government.
We are creating checkpoints in high-trac areas of D.C. that replicate the various
checkpoints South Asian, Muslim, Arab, Middle Eastern, and black people experience every day
being stopped when passing through TSA, being denied service because of religious markers,
being called terrorists, being kicked o of ights, etc., the two groups said in a statement
announcing the planned protests.
In mentioning TSA, the statement was referring to the Transportation Security Administration,
an arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which some critics say has singled out
certain minorities for extra scrutiny at airports and other locations as a means of safeguarding
against potential terrorism.

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners

on Aug. 19 approved a petition submitted by
residents of the ocean block of St. Lawrence

reopen the block to overnight parking.
That street and Queen and Prospect Streets
in the area known as Poodle Beach were closed
to on-street parking from midnight to 6 a.m.
following a petition drive in 1986.
The closure came apparently as a result
of complaints from local residents that
members of the gay community would

according

Commission meeting never mentioned that activity. The transcript of that meeting
did contain language from then-Mayor John Hughes who said the people in the area
suer from an invasion of noisy people from out of the community.
According to longtime resident, Bill Ehrlich, After the bars closed, gays would regularly drive
to the end of the boardwalk, park their cars and socialize.
Queen and Prospect Streets are still closed because, according to Gossett, only St. Lawrence
Street was cited in the petition to reopen. No record could be found as to when the parking
restrictions were placed on those streets.

Prince William schools to consider LGBT policy

The Prince William County School Board on Wednesday will hold a public hearing on whether
to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the districts non-discrimination policy.
The hearing will take place at the Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center in Manassas. The school
board is scheduled to vote on the proposal on Sept. 21.
The Fairfax County School Board added sexual orientation and gender identity to the districts
non-discrimination policy in November 2014 and May 2015 respectively.
The Liberty Counsel led a lawsuit against the Fairfax County School District last December
on behalf of Jake Doe, a minor, his parents and Traditional Values Coalition President Andrea
Laerty. The anti-LGBT legal group alleges members of the Fairfax County School Board violated
Virginia law when it added sexual orientation and gender identity to the nondiscrimination
policy.
Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Brett Kassabian dismissed the lawsuit earlier this year. The
Liberty Counsel appealed the ruling to the Virginia Supreme Court, which was asked to hear the
case on Sept. 1.
Attorney General Mark Herring in March 2015 said Virginia law allows school districts to
include sexual orientation and gender identity in their non-discrimination policies. The opinion
overturned then-Attorney General Jerry Kilgores 2002 opinion that said ocials cannot add
LGBT-specic language to such provisions, unless the General Assembly were to pass a law
allowing them to do so.
Virginias statewide non-discrimination law does not include sexual orientation or gender
identity. State Del. Bob Marshall, who is a vocal opponent of LGBT rights in the General Assembly,
represents Prince William County in the state House of Delegates.

Longtime LGBT rights

opponent Schlay dies at 92
Sons outing in 90s created restorm
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Phyllis Schlay, a conservative activist and
author whose opposition to LGBT rights surfaced
in the 1970s when she argued that passage of the
Equal Rights Amendment would lead to same-sex
marriage and co-ed bathrooms, died on Monday,
Sept. 5, at her home in St. Louis at the age of 92.
Family members said the cause of death was
complications associated with cancer.
Schlafly, an attorney, mother of six children and
self-avowed faithful housewife, emerged in the early
1970s as one of the nations leading opponents of
the feminist movement in the United States.
Political observers have credited her with
PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY, who opposed
almost single handedly orchestrating the defeat
the ERA and marriage equality, most
recently has criticized the movement for
of a proposed U.S. constitutional amendment
transgender equality
banning discrimination based on sex known as
the Equal Rights Amendment or the ERA.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO
BY MICHAEL KEY
When she began speaking out against the ERA
through an organization she formed that later
became the Eagle Forum in the early 1970s most observers expected the required number of
states to approve it. But after Schlay and her allies among fundamentalist Christians, conservative
Catholics and Orthodox Jews linked the ERA to the controversial 1973 Supreme Court ruling
legalizing abortion, support for the ERA in key southern states began to wane.
By 1982, when the deadline for states approval of the measure was reached, the ERA was
defeated due to lack of support from just three states.
As a vocal advocate for what she and her supporters called the family values movement,
Schlay also emerged as an outspoken opponent of LGBT rights legislation on the local, state and
national levels.
She was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage and spoke out in recent years in favor of
so-called bathroom bills to require transgender people to use the public bathrooms that match
their gender at birth.
One of the last columns she wrote before her passing, entitled Setback for the Transgender
Agenda, was published on the Eagle Forum website on Aug. 31, 2016.
With the start of the school year this month, public schools across the nation were all set to
enforce new rights for transgender students, she wrote. Thats the trendy term for confused
kids who claim their gender identity is dierent from their biological sex.
She went on to criticize the Obama administration for issuing a recent policy calling on schools
to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to
their gender identity and praised the ruling by a federal judge in Texas that temporarily halted
enforcement of the bathroom policy in Texas schools.
Schlays views on LGBT issues became the subject of news media coverage in September 1992
when Queer World or QW, a then New York-based magazine, outed her oldest son, John Schlay,
as gay. John Schlay conrmed to the news media that he is gay a short time later.
The family values movement is not anti-gay, John Schlay, then 41 and an attorney, told the
Los Angeles Times when asked about his mothers views on gay issues. I hold my mother in very
good esteem. Shes doing good work, the L.A. Times quoted him as saying.
When contacted by the newspaper, Phyllis Schlay said, There is nothing about my position on
gay rights that should be oensive to a gay unless hes seeking some kind of preferential status.
When asked about her sons outing by then Meet the Press host Tim Russert, Schlay said she
believed her son was targeted by the gay publication as a means of attacking her.
Nobody had anything against my son, she said. It was a deliberate strike at me. It just shows
how hateful those people are, she said, adding that she was being targeted for her anti-abortion
lobbying at the time.
In a statement released on Tuesday, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey
said Schlays views would not stand the test of time for what is good, kind and decent.
Phyllis Schlays legacy will be one of trying to inict as much damage as possible on millions
of women, immigrants, the LGBTQ community, people of color and families over decades, said
Carey. She was against some of the fundamental pillars of freedom, justice and equality from
feminism to abortion to marriage equality.

Southern Decadence draws 100,000 revelers

NEW ORLEANS More than 100,000 people descended upon New Orleans
over the Labor Day weekend for the citys annual Southern Decadence.
Participants in the annual Southern Decadence parade that took place in the
citys French Quarter on Sept. 4 paid homage to members of the Cajun Navy
who carried out water rescues during last months oods that inundated large
swaths of southern Louisiana. Others honored the victims of the Pulse nightclub
massacre in Orlando, Fla.
The rst Southern Decadence took place in New Orleans in 1972.
Kristian Sonnier of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau told WWL,
a local television station, the annual event generates more than $200 million for
the Crescent Citys economy each year.
New Orleans is historically known as a tolerant, diverse place and people
know that about the city and they continue to come here for that experience,
Sonnier told WWL.

Woman reportedly killed due to sexual orientation

CAMDENTON, Mo. Missouri authorities say a man killed a woman because
of her sexual orientation.
KYTV reported Steven Ray Endsley faces two charges of rst-degree murder
in connection with the deaths of Danielle Smith, 27, and her mother, Theresa
Jackson, 61.
The television station said that authorities found the womens bodies in their
burned out trailer on Aug. 29. KYTV cited witnesses who said that Endsley who
lived next door to the victims had an ongoing disagreement with Smith over
her sexual orientation.
Missouris hate crimes law includes sexual orientation. KYTV reported the
FBI is assisting the Camden County Sheris Oces investigation into whether
Endsley killed Smith because she was a lesbian.

Last Pulse victim discharged from hospital

ORLANDO, Fla. The last person who was wounded in the Pulse nightclub
massacre has been released from the hospital.
Orlando Health posted a message to its Twitter page on Sept. 6 that said all of
the 35 people who had been patients at Orlando Regional Medical Center have
been discharged.
The Orlando Sentinel reported the patient was in critical condition until Aug.
17. Orlando Health did not identify the patient or provide additional details
about their identity.
A gunman killed 49 people and left more than 50 others injured when he
opened re inside the Pulse nightclub on June 12. The massacre which sent
shockwaves around the world and sparked renewed calls for gun control in the

McCrory: N.C. anti-LGBT law now irrelevant

Says litigation, Obama
actions rendered HB2 moot
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Targeted for defeat in his bid for reelection as governor for signing a widely
criticized anti-LGBT bill into law, Gov.
Pat McCrory said Thursday the statute
is irrelevant following court rulings and
actions from the Obama administration
in favor of transgender rights.
McCrory made the remarks in defense
of House Bill 2 during a TV interview with
local conservative commentator Marc
Rotterman, who asked the governor if he
was surprised the U.S. Justice Department
interceded to le a lawsuit against the
anti-LGBT law.
Asserting he was surprised at the
timing of the lawsuit, McCrory said House
Bill 2 is actually irrelevant now, citing
the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission
policy
of
accepting
complaints of alleged transgender
workplace discrimination and the Obama
administrations directive against school
discrimination targeting transgender
students.
HB2 is actually irrelevant now because
the Obama administration has given
a directive through EEOC, through
the Justice Department and to our

universities basically saying if you do not

recognize the concept of gender identity,
the redening of sex from the 1964 Civil
Rights Act, you could lose your funding,
McCrory said.
Acknowledging the order from a federal
court in Texas halting the implementation
of the guidance for transgender students,
McCrory predicted the issue would reach
the Supreme Court, saying litigation is
another reason the law is irrelevant.

This is all going to the Supreme Court,

so when the media keeps talking about
HB2, HB2s irrelevant because now
21 other states are suing the federal
government along with the state of North
Carolina, McCrory said.
Signed by McCrory in March after a
single day of consideration by the state
legislature, HB2 nullied all pro-LGBT
city ordinances in the state, including
one recently enacted in Charlotte, and
now bars transgender people from
using the public restroom in schools and
government buildings consistent with
their gender identity.
While its true transgender protections
advanced by the EEOC and the Obama
administration cut into the discriminatory
impact of HB2those federal actions have
limits. For example, as a result of HB2 an
LGBT person in North Carolina has no
legal protections against discrimination
in
public
accommodations
and
transgender people could be denied
entry to a public restroom in a school
or government building if theyre not a
worker or student.
Asked if the media overreacted over
the new law, McCrory said that was
absolutely the case, but also blamed the
nations largest LGBT rights group, the
Human Rights Campaign, forfanning the
ames.
It was very planned and strategic by
a group called the HRC, which has made

North Carolina the epicenter of gender

identity rights in restrooms, locker rooms
and showers in our schools, McCrory
said. This is what people dont realize.
McCrory criticized both the Obama
administration and North Carolina
Attorney General Roy Cooper, whos
refused to defend HB2 in court and made
a pledge to repeal the law a component
of his gubernatorial campaign against
McCrory.
The Obama administration with
support of Attorney General Roy Cooper
believe there must be a mandate on all
of our schools and universities to allow a
person who believes theyre of the other
gender, but they still have the anatomy
of one gender, to able be to use the
restroom, shower and locker room of
their choice as opposed to what weve
been doing in the past making reasonable
accommodations, McCrory said.
House Bill 2 has inspired a massive
outcry. More than 200 business leaders
called for repeal of the law while others
cancelled business expansion in the
state. Conventions in North Carolina
were cancelled as a result of HB2 and
performers such as Bruce Springsteen
and Cirque de Soleil nixed events in the
state.
Jamal Little, a Cooper campaign
spokesperson, said McCrorys assertion
HB2 is irrelevant ignores the economic
harm the law has caused to the state.

Sigourney Coyle takes case

By MARIAH COOPER

A Pennsylvania student says she
wont pass her high schools gym class if
transgender students are allowed to use
the same locker room she does, BuzzFeed
reported last week.
Sigourney Coyle, an incoming freshman
at Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pa.,
spoke to the East Penn School Board to
say she did not agree with the Obama
administrations guideline that requires
schools to let transgender students use
restrooms and changing rooms that
match their gender identity.
In a video posted to Facebook and
recorded by her mother Aryn Coyle,
Sigourney explained she had been sitting
out her middle schools gym classes
following the introduction of the guideline
because she was uncomfortable using a
locker room that transgender students

could also use.

The guideline detailed that schools
must comply with the guidelines or could
risk losing funding.
I am a woman, and I identify as a
woman, and you cant make me change
in front of someone who I dont identify

with, who is physically male, Sigourney

said at the meeting.
Gym requires us to participate to
pass high school and if I dont change
I am not allowed to participate to pass
high school and if I dont change I am
not allowed to participate, Sigourney

continued. So my options are to let

myself be discriminated against or
fail gym for not participating and not
pass through high school, which would
jeopardize my future.
Speaking with BuzzFeed, Aryn says
she doesnt mind her daughter using the
same restroom as a transgender student,
because of the privacy of stalls. Aryn
continued that because of their Christian
faith Aryn does not want Sigourney
to appear naked before a man before
marriage.
In an interview with Morning Call,
Aryn elaborated that she believes
transgender students deserve some
sort of special accommodation, but
that accommodation shouldnt be to
allow transgender students access
to changing rooms they identify with
because it violates the privacy of
everybody else.
BuzzFeed reports Emmaus High School
ocials have oered to allow Sigourney
to take gym class over the summer, but
would still be complying with the White
Houses guidelines.

Pride Fund endorses Clinton

PAC cites candidates views
on LGBT rights, gun safety
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A newly formed political action
committee seeking to support candidates
that back gun safety measures and LGBT
rights announced on Tuesday it has
endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.
Jason Lindsay, executive director of
the Pride Fund to End Gun Violence,
announced in a statement Tuesday he
would meet with the candidate on the
same day to confer the endorsement.
We are endorsing Hillary Clinton for
the presidency because her record on
gun policy and LGBT rights reect the
will of the American people, not the
gun lobby, Lindsay said. Hillary Clinton
has committed to achieving clear policy
reforms, like putting comprehensive
background checks in place and closing
loopholes that put guns in the hands of
violent criminals and terrorists.
The Pride Funds decision to endorse
Clinton isnt a surprise. Upon formation
of the political action committee, which

Democratic presidential candidate HILLARY

CLINTON won the endorsement of the Pride
Fund to End Gun Violence.
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

happenedshortlyafterthe shooting at an
Orlando nightclub that left 49 dead and
53 wounded, Lindsay said he expected
the group would endorse Clinton in the
presidential election.
Clintons platform includes support

for LGBT rights such as a pledge to

sign the Equality Act, a call for increased
transgender visibility and making LGBT
human rights part of U.S. foreign policy
as well assupport for gun safety measures,
including expansion of background checks,
no y, no buy legislation and making
the gun industry legally accountable for
irresponsible actions.
In contrast, Donald Trump, whos
been endorsed by the National Rie
Association, has touted his support
for Second Amendment rights on the
campaign trail and supports national
right to carry, xing the background check
system without expanding it and opposes
gun and magazine bans.
Patty Sheehan, a member of the
Orlando City Council and the Pride
Funds board of advisers, said in a
statement the dierence between Clinton
and Trump on both gun safetyand LGBT
rights couldnt be more stark.
Clintons opponent has espoused
the
most
regressive,
anti-LGBT
platform in modern American history,
Sheehan said. Florida voters are tired
of hateful rhetoric that seeks to restrict
the rights of LGBT citizens while allowing
violent criminals and terrorists to have

access to rearms. Clinton has vowed

to close the Charleston loophole which
allows anyone to purchase a rearm
after three days, even if their background
check has not been completed. This is the
kind of common sense legislation that
Pride Fund supports.
A Pride Fund spokesperson said the
organizations policy team unanimously
decided on Aug. 28 to recommend the
Pride Fund endorse Clinton. The Pride
Funds leadership team approved the
recommendation shortly afterward, the
spokesperson said.
The Washington Blade has placed
a call to the Clinton campaign seeking
comment in response to the Pride Fund
endorsement.
The endorsement from the Pride Fund
adds to the long list of LGBT organizations
that have thrown their support behind
Clinton. Others LGBT groups that support
her are the Human Rights Campaign,
the Equality PAC and the National Gay
& Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Shes
also received endorsements from gun
safety organizations, including the Brady
Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the
Newtown Action Alliance and Everytown
for Gun Safety.

Jean-Daniel Ndikumana
received asylum in Belgium
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Jean-Daniel Ndikumana was living in the
Burundian capital of Bujumbura when he
came out to his younger brother and sister.
His siblings accepted him, but his aunt
kicked him out of her house after his uncle
overheard them talking about his sexual
orientation. Relatives shunned Ndikumana,
who was 22 at the time, and even tried to
take away his last name.
The family said that I was a curse on the
family, Ndikumana told the Washington
Blade during an interview last month at
Human Rights Firsts oces near McPherson
Square in downtown Washington.
Ndikumana ed Burundi on July 31, 2013.
He received asylum in Belgium and now lives
in the province of Luxembourg where he
works for Maison Arc-en-Ciel, a local LGBT
advocacy group whose name translates into
Rainbow House in English.
I knew Belgium was a democratic country
and I gured that I would be able to live my
life pretty well there, Ndikumana told the
Blade in French as then-Human Rights First
fellow Rebecca She interpreted. I have
been able to live comfortably there.

Ndikumana arrived in the U.S. on July 29

and left on Aug. 22.
He met with LGBT and refugee advocates;
lawmakers and ocials with the State
Departments Bureau of Democracy, Human
Rights and Labor while in D.C. Ndikumana
traveled to Portland, Maine, on Aug. 12 to
meet with a group of African LGBT asylum
seekers who had reached out to him.

Ndikumana also visited three of his siblings

who live in New York and Connecticut.
He told the Blade that two of his sisters
who live in the U.S. initially rejected him
because he is gay. Ndikumana said they
have been working hard to reestablish a
relationship.
We were able to all be together and to do
a really good coming out process, he said,
speaking about his visit with them. I think
it went really well. They were able to ask me
lots of questions. I was able to respond to
them, so Im very grateful to my family.
Burundi is a small, impoverished Central
African country that borders Rwanda,
Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo
and Lake Tanganyika.
A protracted civil war in the former Belgian
colony from 1993-2006 left an estimated
300,000 people dead. Fighting resumed
last year after President Pierre Nkurunziza
announced that he would seek a third term
in oce.
Nkurunziza in 2009 signed a law that
criminalized homosexuality in Burundi. Those
who are convicted of engaging in same-sex
sexual relations face up to three years in
prison and a ne of between $30-$60.
In Africa its a lot of money, said
Ndikumana.
Ndikumana told the Blade that he
experienced discrimination because of his

sexual orientation since childhood.

He said a primary school teacher hit
him when he found him messing around
with a boy. Ndikumana told the Blade that
people also called him a pedophile and
his classmates threw stones at him on the
street.
Even though I hadnt done my coming
out process, I presented as feminine, he
said.
Ndikumana told the Blade that he decided
to stand up for my own rights once he
entered secondary school.
He began to advocate on behalf of LGBT
issues in Burundi in 2008.
Ndikumana was a peer educator and
worked for a number of advocacy groups
in the country. He and four other activists
later formed an organization that sought to
expand advocacy eorts that traditionally
took place around the ght against HIV/
AIDS.
We said we cant just work on healthrelated issues, said Ndikumana. We need
to be working on our human rights because
many countries, including Burundi, have
criminalized same-sex activity and it means
that the LGBT community isnt able to access
health services in the way it should be.

Trump could reiterate his support for

North Carolinas anti-LGBT House Bill 2, his
conditional backing of religious freedom
legislation known as the First Amendment
Defense Act or his promise to appoint
conservative justices to the U.S. Supreme
Court who could (but are unlikely to)
overturn the ruling in favor of nationwide
same-sex marriage.
Brandon Lorenz, a spokesperson for
HRC, said he imagines Kaine before the
estimated 3,600 attendees at the dinner
will be able to remind one just how much
is at stake, and how important it is that we
elect a ticket that is able to ensure another
four years of progress for the LGBTQ
community.
I think there are a number of things
that you can point to that are at stake
in this election, whether its marriage
equality, obviously, Donald Trump and
Mike Pence have vowed to appoint
Supreme Court justices who would
overturn marriage equality all the way
down to Donald Trumps support for
HB2 in North Carolina, Lorenzsaid. And
so, there are a number of specic ways
where there is a very clear dierence
between the two campaigns, and why
its just so important that we elect Hillary
Clinton and Tim Kaine in November.
In2012, Republican presidential nominee
Mitt Romney skipped the Values Voter
Summit in the year he challenged President
Obama for the White House. Instead,
Romney prepared a video welcome and
sent his vice presidential nominee Paul
Ryan to make a live appearance. (When
Romney did address the confab in the
previous year, he took the opportunity to
denounce poisonous language in the
conservative movement, a veiled criticism
of anti-LGBT activist Bryan Fischer.)
As Right Wing Watch reports, high-prole
anti-LGBT leaders expected to appear at
the Values Voter Summit include Tony
Perkins, president of the Family Research
Council; Phil Robertson, a star of Duck
Dynasty whos said homosexuality is a sin
and compared it to bestiality; David and
Jason Benham, twin brothers and anti-LGBT
activists who are reportedly connected to
North Carolinas anti-LGBT law; and former
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), whose
anti-LGBT positions duringher presidential
campaign included a pledge to restore
Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
Lorenz pointed out Trump is set to
address the Values Voter Summit a month
after he spoke to anti-LGBT conservatives
at an event in Orlando on the two-month
anniversary of the mass shooting at a gay
nightclub in the city and miles from the
massacre.
This is the second month in a row where
Donald Trump has made a specic point
to court some of the nations most anti-

Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. TIM KAINE is set to address the HRC National Dinner on Saturday.

equality activists, Lorenz said. He has

gone over and again to court the support
of people who would reverse nationwide
marriage equality and who have worked to
defend laws abroad that target people with
criminal prosecution just for being LGBTQ.
As for the Human Rights Campaign
dinner, the event is taking place earlier
than usual. While it usually takes place in
October, the dinner for 2016 is set a month
earlier in September.
Lorenz said one potential upshot of the
earlier date for the national dinner this year
is rallying supporters earlier to support
Clinton and Kaine before Election Day on
Nov. 8.
We have a room full of people where

we can really highlight just how stark the

dierence is between the two candidates,
Lorenz said. And we will be able to do that
well before the election in November, so
obviously Hillary Clinton is running on the
most pro-equality platform of anyone who
has run for president, but Tim Kaine also
has a pro-equality record, and its real stark
dierence between the other side.
Sowhy is Kaine addressing HRCand not
Clinton? Jay Brown, an HRC spokesperson,
said the organization asked her to speak
at the event, but she addressed the
organizations supporters last year, and
this year were excitedSen. Kaine and John
Lewis will be speaking at the largest dinner
in HRCs history.

Lorenz said he expects one issue that

will likely come up during the dinner is
the potential power of LGBT people as a
voting bloc in the election.
If you are able to go back and look at
2012, President Obama won by around 5
million votes nationwide, and if you look at
the exit polling, that was an election where
around six million LGBTQ people went out
and voted, Lorenz concluded. And so,
there are both nationally and a number
of places around the country where the
community can have a very signicant
impact on the outcome of the election.
Rea Carey, executive director of the
National LGBTQ Task Force, spoke broadly
about the importance of LGBT rights
and progressive issues when asked what
Trump and Kaine should say during their
addresses on Saturday.
Our message to presidential and vicepresidential candidates of all parties is
the same: Make LGBTQ freedom, justice,
equality and equity a top priority; urge
the passage of the Equality Act; reject the
misuse of religion as an excuse to impose
anti-LGBTQ laws; deliver a livable wage
not just a minimum wage that people
cant live on; back paycheck equality;
reform our criminal justice system to
make it more about justice and less
about needlessly criminalizing people;
fundamentally change our policing
system from one that targets black people
to one based on the principal that black
lives matter; and help make America a
nation free from violence, especially gun
violence, Carey said.

A press release issued by Wilton Manors

police on Aug. 30 says the department
opened its own investigation that day
and alerted the FBI and Florida state
police after being informed by members
of the LGBT community that Jungwirth
had allegedly made a series of Facebook
postings threatening to exterminate
LGBT people in Wilton Manors possibly
over the Labor Day weekend.
Wilton Manor Police Department
will have increased patrol and visibility
throughout the holiday weekend, working
with local bars and restaurants in an eort
to beef up private security, the Aug. 30
press release said. In addition, we have
reached out to our local law enforcement
partners and asked that they consider
providing additional assistance.
The six-page FBI arrest adavit quotes
one of Jungwirths Facebook postings as
saying, None of you deserve to live. If
you losers thought the Pulse nightclub
shooting was bad, wait until you see what
Im planning for Labor Day.
According to the adavit, another
one of Jungwirths alleged postings said,
You can never catch a genius from MIT
and since you faggots arent dying of
AIDS anymore, I have a better solution to
exterminate you.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel
reported that investigators conrmed
that Jungwirth had attended MIT.
On August 30, 2016, Craig Jungwirth
was identied by the Wilton Manors Police
Department as a known individual and past
city resident who had previously been the

subject of numerous complaints involving the

harassment and stalking of Wilton Manors
residents, the FBI arrest adavit says.
South Florida Gay News, which was
the rst to report the Aug. 30 Facebook
postings under Jungwirths name
making the alleged threats, reported
earlier this year that multiple complaints
had surfaced over the way Jungwirth
was operating Beach Bear Weekend.
The SFGN also reported that at least
two people who had dealings with
him in Florida and Massachusetts led
court petitions for restraining orders
against him on grounds of threatening
behavior.
SFGN, which took screen shots of
Jungwirths Facebook postings, quoted
another one as saying, Im gonna be
killing you fags faster than cops kill
niggers. Its time to clean up Wilton
Manors from all you AIDS infested losers.
An FBI spokesperson told the Sun
Sentinel that Jungworth was being held
since the time of his arrest in the Seminole
County Jail in Sanford, Fla., near Orlando
and he was expected to appear in federal
court in Orlando on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The FBI arrest adavit says Jungwirth
denied making the threatening Facebook
posts when questioned by FBI agents. It says
he refused to speak further with agents and
requested they contact his lawyer. The Sun
Sentinel reported that the lawyer, Ron Baum
of Ft. Lauderdale, couldnt immediately be
reached for comment.
The arrest adavit says that at the time
of his arrest Jungwirth had been living at
the residence of his mother, Maryann T.
Jungwirth, in Orlando.

Members of the Nags Head Board of Commissioners voted on April 8

McCrory and the North Carolina General Assembly to repeal the law.
Nettles told the Blade the Outer Banks Visitors Bureaus board of directors
considered a resolution against HB 2.
The board discussed it at some point, he said.
Evans told the Blade she received an email from a couple in Maine who were
concerned about LGBT issues in North Carolina after McCrory signed HB 2.
She said the couple had considered cancelling their reservation at the
Roanoke Island Inn and wanted to make sure their dollars spent in the Outer

Evans told the Blade the couple spent an extra night after they learned the inn

This lack of respect toward transgender individuals and the way police interact
with this group was echoed in the Department of Justice report issued last month
that criticized the tactics of the Baltimore Police Department.
Yorkman, 62, related this incident to members of the Baltimore Police
Commissioners LGBT Advisory Council on Aug. 31 during a community listening
session at Red Emmas Bookstore Coeehouse in Baltimores Station North
neighborhood. The meeting was inspired by the ndings in the DOJ report with
the main goal for community members to speak directly to the Council regarding
their concerns and ideas for improvement.
Co-chaired by Mark J. McLauri
n and Laura DePalma, the Council posted on its new Facebook page announcing
the meeting, We will use information gathered from the community to better
prepare the Commissioner and command sta to be responsive to the needs of
the LGBTQ community.
Within a week of the reports release and prior to the listening session, the
Council held an emergency meeting to discuss how to use the ndings of the
report to enact systemic and cultural change within BPD. Of particular concern
to all members were the specic ndings with regards to intolerable policing
practices and manifest insensitivity directed towards members of Baltimores
transgender and gender non-conforming community.
About 20 attended the listening session including members of the council and
community with several, in addition to Yorkman, sharing personal stories describing
encounters with BPD that indicated alleged police desires to exercise power and control.
The session, facilitated by associate professor of law Odeanna R. Neal of the
University of Baltimore, was a far-ranging discussion that covered such topics as
the impending consent decree being worked on by DOJ lawyers and Baltimore
to bring about police reforms, potential obstacles by the Fraternal Order of
Police, the composition of the civilian review board, building coalitions with other
organizations and leveraging lawmakers in Annapolis to exempt Baltimore City
from statewide police policies.

LONDON Northern Ireland has lifted its permanent ban on gay and bisexual
men donating blood, Pink News and other outlets report.
In England, Scotland and Wales, men who have sex with men (MSM) can give
blood if they abstain from sex for 12 months, but successive Northern Irish
governments refused to adopt the same rules until now.
Since 2011 until this year, successive health ministers from the anti-LGBT
Democratic Unionist Party had insisted on maintaining rules implemented
during the height of the AIDS crisis, which include a permanent blood ban for
MSM.
However, progress was nally made this year, when the health brief was
handed to Michelle ONeill of Sinn Fin, who immediately moved to bring
Northern Irelands blood donation rules in line with the rest of the UK, Pink News
reports.
Under the rules, which were enacted last week, it will be possible for gay and
bisexual men who have not had sex in the last 12 months to donate blood.
It comes amid a broader review of the blood donation policy in England and
Wales, which may see the deferral system relaxed further or axed in favor of a
policy based on screening for individual risk factors, as operates in some other
European countries, Pink News reports.
John ODoherty, director of the Rainbow Project was quoted in Pink News
praising the new policy.
Some media outlets seem to be expecting crowds of gay and bisexual men to
line up to donate blood now. This is not going to happen, ODoherty said. While
we were hugely thankful to Health Minister Michelle ONeill for abandoning
the illogical approach to blood donations from her predecessors and bringing
Northern Ireland into line with the other regions of the UK, we have always
said that replacing a lifetime ban with a ban on those who have not had sex
within the past 12 months was unlikely to lead to any substantial numbers of
gay and bisexual men donating blood because many of them, like the rest of the
population have had sex at least once this year.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia A new study, the rst of its kind, has found
that transgender youth get pregnant at about the same rate as the general
youth population, the Province, a newspaper in British Columbia, reports.
Using the Canadian Transgender Youth Health Survey of 540 youth from
across the country, the studys authors found that about one in 20 sexually
experienced transgender youth aged 14-25 had become pregnant, or caused a
pregnancy, at least once, the article said.
That ratematches the ve percentof sexually active youths in B.C. who have
become, or have caused someone to become, pregnant, the studys authors
said.
Theresult is surprising, Elizabeth Saewyc, the studys senior author, said.
To a great degree, many clinicians working with trans youth dont necessarily
see them as sexually active, or sexually active in ways that could lead to
pregnancy, Saewyc, a professor of nursing at UBC, told the Province. And if
youre taking hormones its assumed they reduce fertility so even if you are
sexually active you wont get pregnant.
The study has just been published in the International Journal of
Transgenderism, an academic peer-reviewed publication of the World
Professional Association for Transgender Health.
One possible reason such a study had not been undertaken before is that
transgender youth are often in distress, a disorder known as gender dysphoria.
The numbers are important, Saewyc said, because it means health care
providers need to be counseling transgender youth about pregnancy and
sexually transmitted diseases just as much as they do youth in general.
It shatters the notion that trans youth arent at risk for pregnancy, perhaps
because theyre receiving hormones that tend to reduce fertility or because
people assume they arent sexually active, she told the Province.

Trump punkd us all

The man who never
wanted to be president is
dangerously close

KEVIN NAFF is editor of the Washington Blade

and can be reached at kna@washblade.com.

The most underplayed story of the

yearlong,
wall-to-wall
coverage
of
Donald Trumps vanity campaign for the
presidency broke back in March when a
former Make America Great Again PAC
ocial quit and announced that Trump
never wanted to be president in the rst
place.
Even Trumps most trusted advisors
didnt expect him to fare this well,
Stephanie Cegielski wrote in xoJane.com.
Ill say it again: Trump never intended to
be the candidate. But his pride is too out

of control to stop him now, she wrote.

He doesnt want the White House. He
just wants to be able to say that he could
have run the White House. Hes achieved
that already and then some.
Cegielskis bombshell conrmed the
suspicions of many who never took
Trumps candidacy seriously because he
so clearly doesnt want the job and is so
thoroughly unqualied for it.
A man who courts African-American
support, yet describes all black Americans
as living in poverty, your schools are
no good, you have no jobs and who
initially refused to disavow David Dukes
endorsement. A man who visits Mexico
in a faux attempt to woo Latino support
yet has described Mexican immigrants as
rapists and criminals. A man who said at
the Republican National Convention that
he would protect LGBTQ Americans yet
has pledged to appoint Supreme Court
justices who would overturn marriage
equality. A man who has sought the votes
of evangelical Christians yet operated
casinos and has been married three
times, most recently to a woman best
known for her nude photo spreads. A
E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

man who ridiculed John McCains military

service and POW experience yet himself
dodged the draft. A man who picked a
ght with a Gold Star mother, mocked a
disabled reporter, praised anti-American
dictators, demeaned female reporters
who dared question him, called Pope
Francis disgraceful, and the list goes
on.
This is not the behavior of a credible
candidate for commander in chief, yet
a plurality of disaected Republican
primary voters put him over the top and
he is now the face of the modern GOP,
all by accident. He never meant for it to
go this far. He wanted to be a protest
candidate, an assertion conrmed by
Cegielski in her piece. He wanted to
get some free publicity for his TV show
and business ventures. And even now,
after winning the GOP nomination and
running within a few points of rival Hillary
Clinton despite all his reckless and racist
behavior, Vanity Fair reports that Trumps
true endgame may be to launch his own
media business and cable TV channel.
The fact that Clinton isnt leading him
by 50 points says a lot about her own
candidacy and the state of the American
electorate. A Washington Post/ABC News
poll last month showed that 59 percent
of likely voters dont believe Clinton is
honest or trustworthy, and thats down
since January. Of course there are sexist
double standards at work. (Imagine if
Hillary showed up to her campaign rallies
wearing a cheesy baseball cap, shouting
at and berating her audiences.) With all
of Trumps self-inicted wounds, Clinton
should be destroying him in the polls. If
the Republicans had nominated anyone
else, they would have easily retaken the
White House this fall against the damaged
Clinton.
And so with just two months until
Election Day, one safe bet is that
turnout will be at record lows with many
independent and moderate Republican
voters rightly horried by Trump yet
unwilling to pull the lever for Hillary
and with many younger voters turned
o by their options of crazy racist or
establishment status quo.
Trump is the punkd candidate, a man
who tricked the world into taking him half
seriously. If Clinton manages to squeak
by and win, well likely have four years to
watch Trump assail her presidency from
the platform of Trump TV, the greatest
cable news outlet to ever grace the
airwaves.

Southside with You not just for political wonks

Obamas rst date an
engaging romantic tale

KATHI WOLFE, a writer and poet, is a regular

contributor to the Blade.

One of the great pleasures of life is

the fab rst date. Hetero or queer, who
can forget when a drink or coee with
someone youd just met morphed into
hours, then a day, and maybe a night,
with the future love of your life? Even
presidents have rst dates.
Set during summer in Chicago in 1989,
Southside with You, drawing from
interviews that the president and rst
lady have given and on Barack Obamas
memoir The Audacity of Hope, is a
ctional retelling of the Obamas rst
date. During a single day, Barack (played
by Parker Sawyers) and Michelle (played

by Tika Sumpter) visit a museum, go to a

community organizing meeting, see Spike
Lees movie Do the Right Thing when its
just been released, eat ice cream, discuss
religion, talk about racism and kiss. No
wonder many critics are comparing
Southside to Richard Linklaters lm
Before Sunrise.
Yet, though its about the president
and rst lady in their youth, Southside,
directed by Richard Tanne, isnt just for
political wonks. This story, featuring
the youthful Obamas, an attractive,
witty, bright couple, will appeal to those
who crave more Hollywood engaging
romance. As a lover of date movies and
as a lesbian, I found Southside to be
compelling. Whether you agree with all
of his policies no matter your party
aliation if youre queer, youll want
to see Southside, a love story about
Obama, aectionately known in the LGBT
community as the rst gay president.
(Obama, the rst president to endorse
same-sex marriage, was given this
moniker because of his support for LGBT
rights.)
Southside probably wont be your
fave, if you only go to the movies for

fast action or special eects; or if youre

steeped in cynicism and dystopia. There
are no explosions or superheroes.
Southside is Before Sunrise if Sunrise
had an infusion of Stevie Wonders music,
Gwendolyn Brooks poetry, Ernie Barnes
art and Spike Lees movies. Its about
nothing more than an extended rst date.
But Southside is far more signicant
than your typical date movie, NPR
correspondent Karen Grigsby Bates and
NPRs movie critic Bob Mondello noted
recently on the Code Switch podcast.
The lm is not about other things,
its just about the two of them getting
to know each other, Mondello said.
Whats remarkable...is that at any given
moment, its not being remarkable. Its
being lifelike. And that is such a rarity in
movies. You dont see African-American
characters behaving in a way that is just,
sort of, normal.
Im not a person of color. I cant imagine
how much it might mean for people of
color to Barack and Michelle on a date
behaving in a way that...is normal in
Southside.
It meant the world to me to see
Barack and Michelle as a hopeful

couple that must contend with racism.

Michelle has encountered racism and
sexism at the law firm where shes the
only female attorney. At Princeton,
some of her white classmates wouldnt
talk to her outside of class. Because
Michelle advises Barack, whos a
summer intern at the firm, she feels its
inappropriate to go out with him. They
talk about going from planet black to
planet white. Though it takes place
over 25 years ago, the racism faced by
the young couple in Southside still
exists today.
Racism, homophobia and transphobia
arent equivalent, and Hollywood hasnt
stereotyped African Americans and LGBT
people in the same way. Yet, there are
parallels between the black and queer
communities and the ways in which Tinsel
Town has portrayed us. Our culture is not
post-racist, post-homophobic or posttransphobic.
As is the case with people of color,
too few movies depict queer people as
couples that date, have caring families
and fall in love. Too often, were portrayed
as deviant or tragic. Southside is a
welcome sign that Hollywood might be

Taco trucks and burner phones

Staring into the abyss of
Trump surrogates

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist.

Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

The mean and increasingly incoherent

presidential campaign of Donald Trump
is oddly enhanced (in entertainment if
not electoral terms) by the spectacle of
his surrogates on cable news shows. The
trouble for them is they cant be sure he
wont change his story from one hour
to the next. I half expect him to enter a
studio mid-interview like Richard III and
denounce one of his hapless advocates.
They are lured by vanity and ambition
into the treacherous waters of his impulse-driven campaign.
Marco Gutierrez, founder of Latinos
for Trump, warned MSNBCs Joy Reid on
Sept. 1 that Mexico has a very dominant

culture. If you dont do something about

it, youre going to have taco trucks on every corner. This absurd stereotype set
o a mayhem of mockery by people who
consider taco trucks a ne idea.
Pastor Mark Burns of South Carolina,
who was a speaker (or shouter) at the Republican National Convention, recently
contributed to the political discourse by
tweeting a cartoon of Hillary Clinton in
blackface. His bio claimed he graduated
from North Greenville University, served
in the Army Reserve, and joined the Kappa
Alpha Psi fraternity. None of those claims is
true. When challenged on his lies by CNN
reporter Victor Blackwell, he claimed his
website had been hacked, then walked out
of the interview. Pastor Burns turns out to
be a complete sentence.
When Trump supporter Paris Dennard
on Aug. 26 accused Secretary Clinton of
voter suppression by trying to turn white
voters away from Trump, New York Times
columnist Charles Blow rolled his eyes
before criticizing CNN for giving someone like Dennard airtime to say patently
false, ridiculous things. Hey, Mr. Blow,
dont mess with CNNs business model.
On Aug. 29, Trump supporter Jerey Lord
claimed on CNN that the Democratic Party

had maintained a consistently racist position from the time of Jeerson until today,
which might make sense if you ignore the
political history of the past 50 years.
RNC Chair Reince Priebus told Meet the
Press host Chuck Todd on Aug. 28, I go
with the ow. That was a pity, because if
he had phrased it just a bit dierently, he
could have echoed the scene from Casablanca where Captain Renault tells Major
Strasser, I blow with the wind, and the
prevailing wind happens to be from Vichy.
Priebus also claimed that the Clinton Foundation spends 80 percent of donations on
administrative costs, when the actual number is 12 percent.
Rudy Giuliani, who required the worst
terrorist attack ever on American soil in
order to seem briey tolerable, burnished
his medical credentials on Aug. 21 by
telling Fox News, So, go online and put
down Hillary Clinton illness, take a look at
the videos for yourself. I did, and Hillary
is ne; but I followed a similar method
and learned that a NASA rover has found
the remains of a Martian King.
Trump senior adviser Boris Epshteyn
on Sept. 2 blithely dismissed Chuck
Todds video evidence of Trumps contradictory statements, and turned to the fa-

vorite GOP theme of Hillary as a modern

Lady Macbeth: I dont use burner phones
like a mobster like she did.
Republicans are always simplifying
their work by inventing a long rap sheet
for Clinton despite her never having been
charged with a crime. As my friend Mark
Thompson of SiriusXMs Make It Plain
says, if Hillary has really murdered people
as the right claims, why would you want
to mess with her?
When CNNs Brianna Keilar pointed
out to Trump special counsel Michael
Cohen on Aug. 17 that Trump was down
compared to Clinton, he shot back, Says
who? Keilar was taken aback, but answered, Polls. Most of them. All of them.
Cohen kept up his aggressive tone, as if
that would change the facts. Keilar grew
more rm. All of them. The polls have
tightened as of this writing, but Trump still
trails in most of them.
Trumps messengers are like an army of
poisonous ants. Nietzsche warns us, When
you stare into the abyss, the abyss also
stares into you. So I close my laptop, switch
o the television, and head out to meet a
friend for drinks. Two months to go.

Tobacco cessation: Lets get this done

LGBT people are stragglers
in anti-smoking movement
By SALLY SUSMAN
I just dont get it.
The LGBT community is really good at
getting stu done. We know how to rally
behind a cause and act with purpose. In my
adult life, we responded to the deadly AIDS
epidemic, cleared a path to military service
and repealed laws that obstructed marriage
equality.
Thats why I am puzzled to see the
LGBT community stymied when it comes
to battling nicotine addiction and the
disproportionate abuse of tobacco products
in our midst. Nearly 1 in 4 LGBT adults is
a smoker 23.9 percent for LGBT adults
versus 16.6 percent for straight adults,
according to a recent CDC report.
Have we not heard that smoking kills? For
decades, the media have been broadcasting
the dire consequences of tobacco addiction,
which raises the users risk of lung cancer,

heart disease and other ailments. In the

U.S., smoking is responsible for 480,000
premature deaths each year, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It is one of the leading preventable causes
of death. Yet, somehow, the message isnt
getting across. While we are witnessing
signicant declines in smoking rates in the
general population, one-quarter of the LGBT
community continues to be hooked.
So, why cant we quit? Its hard to get
answers, for the simple reason that most
national and state tobacco use surveysdont
collect sexual orientation information and
often include insucient numbers of LGBT
persons to yield representative results.
Surely LGBT individuals often suer
from stress caused by prejudice and
stigma conditions that are known risk
factors for nicotine addiction.Studies show
we struggle with societal and quality-oflife disparities that cause or exacerbate
stress. These dierences include higher
rates of homelessness among LGBT youth
and shocking rates of violence against
transgender individuals, some of which a

new CDC study describes in heart-wrenching

detail.
These societal factors may illuminate
causes of addiction, but they dont explain
the failure to mount a response.
Heres my theory: While LGBT people are
exposed to anti-smoking interventions such
as tobacco price increases, smoke-free laws
and campaigns in mass media, members of
our community may not have equal access
to smoking cessation programs and other
forms of quitting assistance.
In addition, job-related discrimination
and the lack of employment opportunities
contribute to the challenges LGBT individuals
face in accessing health services. Outright
denial of care due to sexual orientation or
gender identity have been identied as
access barriers in a 2015 brief by the Kaiser
Family Foundation.
Conditions can change. The pace
of positive momentum for the LGBT
community has been nothing short of
breathtaking. We must not let the smoking
habit take that breath away.
Companies like the one I work for can

help through patient support programs,

community outreach and other initiatives
some of which we have already begun.
At Pzer, we understand social and cultural
determinants of health care access. We work
with healthcare providers, governments
and local communities to support and
expand access to reliable, aordable health
care around the world, especially among
communities where nicotine addiction rates
are disproportionately high. Going forward,
this will be especially important when
working with social and sexual minorities,
where smoking rates remain high and
access to insurance and quality health care
are often impaired.
Its time the LGBT community recognizes
that we are now stragglers in the global
anti-smoking movement. Maybe we have
relied too long on cultural explanations and
justications that enable the quiet killer in
our midst. Its time we exposed the villainy
of addiction.Lets commit to quit.

DNC announces Victory Leaders Councils

Helping Democrats put red

states in play

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a longtime Democratic

Party and LGBT rights activist. He is a regular
contributor to the Blade.

Without sounding too condent, it is

fair to anticipate Hillary Clinton will win
big in the District of Columbia and get our
three electoral votes. So she only needs
267 more, easy right?
That thinking is dangerous. While we
can be condent a number of other states
will be blue there are still many important
things those of us in states considered
safe for Democrats can do to help ensure
victory in every state. From phone calls
to door knocking to fundraising we need
to work not just for Hillary but for those
Democrats running down-ballot across
the country where winning is about getting out the vote. We win and win big if
our voters go to the polls.
The great thing about our country is
more people believe in fairness, equality

and decency than support the racism,

sexism, homophobia and demagoguery
of Donald Trump, which has taken over
the Republican Party.
To get what we need done in
coordination with the Hillary for
America campaign the newly invigorated
Democratic National Committee, under
the leadership of Chair Donna Brazile
and Chief of Sta Brandon Davis has
announced a sweeping new program to
energize Democrats across the nation.
The DNC is organizing through a
Victory Leaders Council (VLC) program,
which will help Democrats put red states
in play as well as mobilize volunteers and
grassroots support in blue states. The
goal of the councils is to help elect Hillary
Clinton and win down-ballot elections this
cycle and beyond.
Brandon Davis said, Democrats are
competing across the country and building
for the future. In states from Georgia to
Arizona, demographics and politics are
changing quickly and Democrats are
making the investments to make gains
now so that we can take majorities later.
We are mobilizing voters across the
country to elect more Democrats and to
deliver on the policies being driven by
the Clinton-Kaine ticket and Democrats at
every level of the ballot.
The person chosen to lead this 50-state

eort is the amazing Adam Parkhomenko,

who has been named the DNCs National
Field Director. Many of us know Adam
from his early days in Virginia when
as a 17-year-old student he began an
organization to support Hillary Clinton.
The nation heard about Adam when he
co-founded Ready for Hillary, serving as
its executive director, setting in motion
the movement to encourage Hillary to
run for president. He was then named
Director of Grassroots Engagement for
Hillary for America working 24/7 through
the grueling and winning primary
campaign.
Each Victory Leaders Council will
include prominent individuals and
elected ocials and will depend on
grassroots activists who put elbow grease
into electing Democrats up and down the
ballot. The idea is for the structure put
in place today to live on beyond Election
Day to help Democrats win in mid-term
elections, ip Republican majorities, and
help President Hillary Clinton enact her
policy agenda.
During this presidential campaign, the
Victory Leaders Councils, while volunteerled and driven, will work closely with each
Hillary for America state director as well
as the executive directors and chairs of
each state party. The VLC program will
be overseen by the Democratic National

Committees eld team and each VLC

leader will have a designated liaison at
the DNC. The work will include keeping
stakeholders engaged through regular
meetings and phone calls, organizing
door-to-door canvasses, phone banks,
and Get-Out-The-Vote eorts in each
state.
The D.C. Victory Leaders Council will
be ramping up its work and will take
to heart the words of Donna Brazile,
who has said about the future, We
are building on the momentum of our
hugely successful convention, where we
passed the most progressive platform
in history that would do the most
good for the most families. There is a
stark choice for voters to make in this
election, and Democrats have a historic
opportunity and responsibility to help
voters see that choice clearly. The Victory
Leaders Councils are one more way that
Democrats are investing in all 50 states.
Democrats and everyone around the
country who want to make a dierence
and work toward a more progressive
vision for America can be a part of this
eort. Whether you knock on doors in
your neighborhood, help make phone

SALIM GAUWLOOS today at work

teaching dance in New York.

Former Madonna dancer

Salim Gauwloos revisits Truth
or Dare on its 25th anniversary

Tour dancers. When will we get to see it in

Washington?
GAUWLOOS: Its a great movie, youll
enjoy it. Theyre working on a U.S. theatrical
release early next year. Before everybody
downloads it. Youll see it soon. Its a
beautiful movie. They did a great job.

really should be all the dancers. Of course

Gabriel (Trupin), he passed away a long time
ago, but his mother represents him in the
movie and thats really beautiful. It wouldnt
have been the same without all the dancers
so in the end, we all agreed and started
shooting in 2014.

Madonna: Truth or Dare, the landmark

1991 documentary (aka In Bed With
Madonna) is widely remembered not only
as an eye-popping memento of the singers
legendary Blond Ambition Tour, but also
as a gay cultural touchstone.
In some ways, its the gay equivalent of
classic rockumentaries like Gimme Shelter
or The Last Waltz but its more than that,
too. Not only because it captures Our Lady
at the peak of the zeitgeist, but also because
its depiction of Madonnas back-up dancers
(of the seven, only Oliver Crumes was
straight) being so matter-of-factly out that
it felt almost otherworldly to the gay boys
who lapped it up in Peoria and everywhere
else.
In honor of its anniversary it screens
twice in the coming days at the AFI Silver
we caught up with Salim Slam Gauwloos,
one of the Blond Ambition dancers
whose onscreen kiss with the late Gabriel
Trupin is one of the lms most memorable
moments. His comments have been slightly
edited for length.

BLADE: But it has already been on the

festival circuit, right?
GAUWLOOS: Yes. We mostly go out in
twos, only in Berlin and Amsterdam they
ew everybody over, but mostly just two of
us to wherever. I went to Colombia, to Tel
Aviv. It takes a lot of time always, but its fun.
Almost like being on tour again.

BLADE: Had you seen the other ve any

since the Truth or Dare premiere or kept
in touch with them at all?
GAUWLOOS: No. For example, Carlton
(Wilborn), Oliver (Crumes) and Kevin (Stea),
I hadnt seen for probably close to 25 years.
Maybe 24 years. And Luis (Camacho) Id
seen a little bit here and there but that was
probably like 12 years. Jose (Gutierez) and
I both live in New York so I saw him a little
bit here and there but with most of them,
Id had literally no contact at all. It was so
amazing to see them all again after 25 years.

WASHINGTON BLADE: Before we get

to Truth or Dare, tell us a little about
Strike a Pose, the reunion documentary
youre in with the other Blond Ambition

BLADE: Did you talk to the other dancers

before agreeing to it?
GAUWLOOS: No. I think the last one to
jump on board was Jose (Gutierez). I felt it

By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com

BLADE: How did they pitch you on Strike

a Pose?
GAUWLOOS: They approached me
in 2013. I was doing a job, this big dance
festival in Vienna and they contacted me. I
said, OK, Ill meet with Reijer Zwaan, one
of the directors. He came to meet me in
Vienna and we must have talked for about
eight hours. It just felt right, I dont know. I
think the directors, Ester Gould and Reijer
Zwaan, these directors from Holland,
theyre amazing storytellers. I did kind of
think, Do I really want to throw myself out
there again to be judged really in some kind
of way, I want to be careful about that, but I
had a really good feeling about it.

BLADE: You said recently that Reijer

Zwaan was almost like your psychiatrist.
How so?
GAUWLOOS: You probably know I was
diagnosed in 1987 as being HIV-positive and
I wanted to be out with that for a long time.
It just felt silly to not be. So then along came
Reijer and we talked for eight hours and it
just all came out you know, crying and it
was really the rst time I sat with somebody
I didnt really know and told them, Yes, Ive
been HIV for 29 years, 27 at the time. I was
like, Oh my God, I feel like Ive just been to
a psychiatrist. Ive never been to a real one.
Maybe I should (laughs).

BLADE: Madonna made a surprise

appearance at a Truth or Dare anniversary
screening a couple weeks ago in New York.
What did it feel like when she walked in the
room unannounced?
GAUWLOOS: It was surreal. We were
just sitting there and were thinking, OK,
why isnt the movie playing? and boom,
she walks in. It was like the whole room just
gasped for air. You couldnt believe it was
real. She just sat down, watched the movie
and left. But it was amazing.
BLADE: How does it strike you seeing it
now?
GAUWLOOS: I watched it a few years ago
before we did Strike a Pose. When I see it
Im like, Oh my God, my hair. Me and my
hair, its the only thing I can look at. I cant stop
ipping it, you know. Its like I was so busy with
my hair always. Im just happy to have been
part of such a big, iconic moment. If you look
at the concert footage, it doesnt look dated.
The whole thing is just amazing. The least
annoying thing for me is the kiss, the most
important gay kiss in history. That I dont have
a problem watching but some of it Im like, Oh
my God, no I did not just say that. Its like going
back in time. It was a good experience.
BLADE: Wasnt your hair sort of annoying at
that length always falling in your face?
GAUWLOOS: Well when you dance, your
hair ies around so it has more of an eect.
I liked having longer hair and swinging it
around.

CONNIE EMERY-WALKER
How long have you been out and who was
the hardest person to tell?
I came out almost 15 years ago. The
hardest person to tell was my father.I knew
he would love me regardless, but I also knew
the news would break his heart.

PHOTO BY SNAP FACTORY PHOTOGRAPHY, COURTESY CONNIE EMERY-WALKER

By JOEY DiGULIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Connie Emery-Walker joined the Imperial Court of Washington in 2013 after
taking time to see if the organization really was all it is cracked up to be. She
found it was.
I just did my research to nd out if they really did send every dollar to
charity, the 30-something Forestville, Md., native says. When I realized
they really were doing this all from the heart, through the court, for the
community, I was in.
The Court has its Coronation V: a Night on the River Nile, Journey to Ancient
Egypt main event on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 7-11 p.m. (cocktails at 6) at the
Washington Marriott at Metro Center (775 12th St., N.W.) when Cookie Von
Shigglesworth will succeed Muy Blake Stephyns as Empress. Full details on
all weekend festivities at imperialcourtdc.org.
Emery-Walker is a femme fatal (i.e. non-burlesque) female performer in
the court who performs as CiTooker-Bottoms. Her wife, Angel McWilliams
performs as Xavier Bottoms.
Emery-Walker works by day in the DHA Inspector Generals Oce. She lives
in Purcellville, Va., and enjoys performing and raising money for charities like
the Imperial Court in her free time.

Whos your LGBT hero?

Ellen DeGeneres. She lives her life out loud,
with no regrets and never lets her fame go to
her head. She has given so much back to those
in need and every day shows society that she is
no different than anyone else. She is a person,
a human being, with feelings and a great big
heart that shows through to the world.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past

or present?
I have always called two places home:
Ziegfelds and Freddies Beach Bar.

Describe your dream wedding.

The one I had on Nov. 2, 2013 at Almas
Temple when I married my beautiful wife.

What non-LGBT issue are you most

passionate about?
The mental health and well-being of
todays youth as a whole, so bullying and
suicide prevention.

What historical outcome would you change?

The Vietnam War

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
I would have to say MTV.When it started,
I was a child and it was like the biggest news
ever!

On what do you insist?

No one will ever be alone! They may be
single or living alone, but they will never feel
alone in this world, if Im a part of their life.

If your life were a book, what would the

title be?
From Rock Bottom to the Top, Helping
Everyone Along the Way!

If science discovered a way to change

sexual orientation, what would you do?
Stay exactly who I was made to be.
What was your last Facebook post or Tweet?
The poster for Coronation attached to a
post that said: I am ocially having heart
palpitations! AHHHHHHHHH! This ball
coordinator is slightly stressed! LOL!

202.747.2077

What do you believe in beyond the

physical world?
I believe that there is a creator, and that we
are all part of the world that we see whether
in body or spirit. I am Native American
and Irish and I believe that when we leave

this world, we become another presence

here:The wind in the trees, the wings of the
buttery, the colors in the sunset. I believe
that all things are part of that cycle of life.

Whats your advice for LGBT movement

leaders?
Listen to what not just the LGBT world is
saying but what everyone is saying. To change
the future we must change the way people
view society as a whole. Evolution has proven
that man does evolve, both physically and
emotionally. I say we all need to focus on
speeding up the evolution of acceptance and
love for ALL people. Acceptance is something
that should never have to be tolerated, just felt
and done without thought of consequence.

What would you walk across hot coals for?

I would take my last breath for my children
(all of them). There is nothing this world, or any
other, could send my way that I would not bare
for my family (chosen and biological alike).

What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?

That I have always been told, You dont look
gay to me. When I came out 15 years ago, going
into a gay bar looking just as I do now (just a little
younger and thinner), I was asked by at least 10
people a night if I knew I was in a gay bar. Drives
me crazy! Just because my hair is not short and
I dont dress in mens clothes or wear a sports
bra, I wasnt believed that I was a lesbian. Luckily
times have drastically changed and my sexuality
isnt usually such a shock to people anymore.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Im a cheesy movie lover so for me, its
movies like The Birdcage and To Wong Foo.

Whats the most overrated social custom?

Not wearing white after Labor Day.

What trophy or prize do you most covet?

Being a mom to all 10 of my kids. If I had
to pick an award it would be a tie between
two: My current Miss Gay United States
Femme Fatale title, and the very rst award
I ever received from the Imperial Court of
Washington: Line Member of the Year.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

So so so many things. That it was OK to be
who I was and not worry that I would lose
everyone and everything because of it.

Why Washington?
Why not Washington? Being born and raised
on its outskirts always kept life interesting and
full of history for me. We all take for granted
what we are privileged to see every day, but for
me, I still have a tear that rolls down my face
when I see the cherry blossoms bloom or walk
up to the Lincoln Memorial and realize just how
instrumental he was in our history. Its things
like this that make me love this city so much.

Revisiting Angels
Landmark Kushner work gets
25th anniversary production
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Like many great works, Angels in America
comes from the urgent need to tell a story.
Gay playwright Tony Kushners sprawling
early 90s masterpiece is centered on a gay
man with AIDS in mid-80s New York (during
both the Reagan years and the height of the
AIDS crisis), a dangerous and frustrating but
ultimately galvanizing time for gay people.
He tells an undeniably powerful story that
resonates with audiences. And while a few
productions in some pockets outside of New
York were met with the resistance, the Pulitzer
Prize- and Tony-winning Angels soon took
its place in the canon of great 20th century
drama.
Angels is a play told in two parts:
Millennium Approaches and Perestroika.
Its a work whose relevancy remains intact
(particularly in this campaign season) and
whose artistic merit is secured. Currently
Round House Theatre and Olney Theatre
Center have joined forces with a much
anticipated 25th anniversary co-production.
The two parts will run in rotating repertory at
Round Houses space in Bethesda.
Both epic and intimate, Angels follows the
disintegrating relationships of two couples:
the intellectual Jewish Louis Ironson and his
WASP lover Prior Walter who has recently
been diagnosed with AIDS; and Joe Pitt, a
closeted young Mormon lawyer, and his
valium-addicted wife Harper Pitt. Thrown into
their lives are a cast of characters including the
notorious closeted powerbroker Roy Cohn
who is dying from AIDS, the ghost of alleged
Cold War spy Ethel Rosenberg, a best friend,
the concerned mother, an anonymous trick
and an angel who chooses Prior to deliver
her urgent message to humanity. Reinvented
as a prophet, Prior takes command of his
destiny and shows great courage in the face
of seeming death.
Local out actors Tom Story and Jon Hudson
Odom who are playing Prior and his best friend
Belize, an ex-drag queen turned registered
nurse, in the Round House/Olney production
agree theres both a delight and responsibility
in performing Kushners play. The cast mates
and friends who rst met doing Our Town
at Fords Theater also share an admiration for
each others acting abilities.
Angels has always been part of my
theatrical education, Story says. I know the
play well and have long wanted to play Prior.
Its a great part. Hes funny, erce and full of
rage.
But the part comes with challenges too, he
adds.
In rst scene he reveals a KS lesion, so hes
sick throughout the show. To be sick on stage
that long is hard acting wise. Also, the length
(two parts in seven hours) and emotionality of
the play are pretty massive.

TOM STORY, left, as Prior and JON HUDSON

ODOM as Belize.

Story, who doesnt pinpoint his age but

admits hes older than his 30-ish character,
talks about tapping into the fear surrounding
the AIDS crisis.
I came of age in a world where sex could
kill you, he says. And though I wasnt an
adult in the 80s, Ive heard rsthand accounts
of that time from older gay friends. Angels
serves in part as a memorial to a time when
AIDS was essentially a death sentence and the
government didnt give care. But the play is
also very much alive in the present. HIV/AIDS
is still a problem. The hate evidenced in the
Orlando shootings. By doing the play we are
choosing not being silent.
Story says the work is not meant to be taken
casually.
Going back to the era evokes emotions
and exasperation for some and is a history
lesson for others. That said, its brilliantly
plotted and the language is extraordinary. The
characters are all real people but also highlevel thinkers, so the ideas are deep and rich
and complicated.
Like Story, Odom was already familiar with
Angels, perhaps in an even more intimate
way.
Id seen the HBO adaptation the year
before coming out. I remember watching and
relating to characters and feeling validated for
the rst time as a gay man in the community.
They were talking about things we werent
talked about lot where I grew up the Chicago
suburb of Wheaton, a Guinness Book entry for
having the most churches per capita.
For Odom, who is African-American, Belize
was one of the rst gay black characters he
encountered.

Frank Ocean goes Blond

Genre-defying album one of
years best so far
By CHRIS GERARD
Anticipation for new Frank Ocean
studio material has been so frenzied that
somehow it seems longer than just four
years since his celebrated 2012 debut
Channel Orange heralded his arrival as
a major creative force.
That brilliant soul/hip-hop hybrid
includes the heartrending ballad Bad
Religion, about forbidden, unrequited
love that a closeted young man feels
for a male friend. The track, in tandem
with Oceans startling public candor
about his attraction to men, created
a stir for both his bravery in a subgenre often viewed as being less
than tolerant toward homosexuality
(although support for Ocean far
eclipsed any negative outcry) as well
as for its riveting honesty. The genretripping collection, also highlighted by
marvelous gems such as Pyramids
and Monks, was hailed by critics and
fans as a masterpiece and it landed on
many year-end best of 2012 lists.
Speculation
over
Oceans
next
move has been almost obsessive.
Every hint, comment and potential
clue about the follow-up to Channel
Orange launched a mixture of feverish
anticipation and consternation by fans
battling impatience while salivating
over the prospect of hearing what
Ocean would turn out next. Ocean
nally ended the long wait with a pair
of strong projects: a visual album called
Endless that dropped on Aug. 19, and
the breathlessly awaited new studio
release, Blonde, on the following day.
Despite being deantly non-commercial
in every sense of the word theres not
a strong pop radio hook to be found
Blonde has already achieved massive

FRANK OCEAN took his time with his sophomore album but the wait paid o.

success, shooting straight to No. 1 on

the Billboard Top 200 album chart.
Its interesting to note that Ocean
surrounds himself with a bevy of
diverse collaborators on Blonde and,
despite this, the album has been almost
universally acclaimed by critics and
revered by serious music fans since
its release. Early this year Beyoncs
similarly vast list of contributors on

Lemonade was viewed by some

vocal critics as tacit proof that the
singer is merely a pop diva propped
up by those with the real talent. This
double standard is curious, and yet not
so obvious sexism, with men often
aorded more respect for their talent,
has been rampant in popular music
from the beginning. Lemonade and
Blonde couldnt be more dierent

sonically and thematically, but both are

bold and uncompromising works that
challenge listeners and raise the bar on
what standard popular music produced
for mass consumption can be.
Let there be no doubt, Blonde
is a triumph. Although the endless
perfectionism that led to its long gestation
may be frustrating for fans, its dicult to
argue that the end result does not justify
Oceans meticulous attention to detail. His
downtempo, idiosyncratically structured
compositions fall between the cracks of
any traditionally denable genre. The
overall vibe is that of fragmented dreams,
an intimate night of mind travel thats
languid and shrouded in smoke, mellow
and contemplative but also immediate
and emotionally potent.
Frank Ocean is one of those rare
artists with a singular voice, a unique
and immediately identiable sound
that is boundlessly original yet wears
its inuences and forebearers on its
sleeve (think R&B greats like Prince,
Stevie Wonder, DAngelo and Bill Withers
merged with hip-hop pioneers like De
La Soul punctured with other sonic
excursions as diverse as the Beatles
and Radiohead). His hypnotic tone
poems wander in unexpected directions,
looping a kaleidoscope of sounds,
samples and vocal eects with complete
disregard for the conning lines of
standard pop, R&B or hip-hop. Blonde
is not a ashy album its low key,
personal and obviously a work of intense
importance for the artist. Its deeply
absorbing and rewarding, with tracks
like lead single Nikes, Pink + White,
Self Control and the epic closer Futura
Free among the high points. Its hardly
about the individual tracks, though.
Blonde is an experience, a continuous
journey thats fascinating to hear unfold.
It rewards repeated and careful listens,
great headphones and a wide open mind
of musical curiosity.

Is shared political ideology a

make-or-break factor?

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed

psychologist who works with gay individuals
and couples in D.C. He can be found online
at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying
information has been changed for reasons
of condentiality. Have a question? Send it to
Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

HI MICHAEL,
My boyfriend is threatening to break
up with me unless I stop working for
Republicans.
I live here in D.C. and work for a
Republican organization by choice. Not
just because I need a job, not just because
I enjoy the work and the position is a good
t to my skills, but also because I believe in
many of the tenets of the party.
Joe doesnt work in politics and wasnt
really politically minded until you-knowwho (the antithesis of everything I
admire about Republicanism) got the
nomination. Now Joe is always ranting
about how I work for the Devil, how Im a
self-hating gay (totally untrue) andsimilar
sentiments.
In part I blame his friends, who are
always making fun of my work, so much so
that I stopped hanging out with them. But
even when were alone Joe wont let up, so
Im not enjoying spending time with him
lately.
I used to really like being with him,
making dinner, watching Netix, going
out dancing. Although when I think about
it I cant say that weve ever been aligned
in our views about the world or about
life. Honestly we never had any heavy
conversations, Weve kept things light and
focused on having a nice time together.
Maybe thats enough for a good
relationship. Maybe we dont need to share
the same ideology. But I think respect is
important and its not working for me to
have Joe say that I must changejobsor he
will end our relationship.
How can we break this deadlock?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
You could run the other way. Who wants
a partner that threatens to leave unless you
do what he wants?
But maybe Im being impetuous with
that suggestion.
If there is enough that you like about Joe
and your relationship, you need to do what

S E PT E M B E R 09, 2016 29

you said in your letter that you avoid doing:

have a serious talk with him, even though
this is a dicult subject.
Does he mean to be threatening you?
Does he want a relationship where the
two of you threaten each other to get
your way?
If his answer is yes, follow my rst
suggestion. Its awful to be in a relationship
with that sort of dynamic.
But I hope Joe and anyone who think
its OK to dangle the possibility of nasty
consequences as a way of eecting change
will consider the following:
An essential part of being in a serious
relationship is guring out how to be close
to someone who at times sees life through
a totally dierent lens.
Any potential partner is bound to be
dierent from you. Some dierences will
be interesting and others will be downright
troublesome in important ways that you
dont like. Yes, this includes political beliefs.
You dont have to stay with any
particular person, but once you do choose
to be with someone, you dont get to tell
him how he must change to suit you.
You must learn to tolerate aspects
of your partner that have the potential to
make you unhappy.
Your opinion is just that; you dont get
to control your partners views, actions and
life choices.
If Joe is clear that a Republican boyfriend
is not for him, then its time to say goodbye.
Its not your job to let go of things that are
important to you, in order to accommodate
your boyfriends discomfort. Nor is it
healthy for either of you.
Being in a relationship, just like being
alive, is a continual learning process. If Joe
is up for learning to accept you, including
your politics, great. And if youre ready to
be someone who tackles dicult subjects,
I would say the two of you have a good
chance for a vibrant relationship, going
forward.
You raise a great question: How much of
a connection to your partner is important?
Yes, relationships are in part about
having good times together, but more is
required for a relationship to have strength
and depth. You want to have similar core
values so that you respect the person youre
going through life with. I think kindness
is also essential, along with honesty, a
willingness to challenge each other when
its important to speak up, and a willingness
to grow.
You mayor may not agree withmy list
of priorities, and you likely have some of
your own. In any case, youve made it clear
that respect is vital to you and threats are
a no-go, so I suggest that you talk with Joe
and see if its possible for the two of you
to create a relationship that can weather
your dierences. Any other relationship is
not going to be viable in the long run.

BLADE: Speaking of hair, why did Madonna

change her hair halfway through the tour?
That ponytail look was so iconic for her but
then she did the curls, which became kind
of a trademark look too. It feels odd to me
watching Truth or Dare because shes always
backstage and its supposed to make you feel
like shes walking out into the concert footage
but it doesnt match because she has the
dierent hair.
GAUWLOOS: It was just like one day she
had the ponytail and then she just went to the
Shirley Temple curls. I dont think there was
any specic reason for it. With the ponytail
sometimes it would y around in your face so
I think the curls were easier. Personally I liked
the curls more.

BLADE: What do you do now?

GAUWLOOS: I teach at Broadway Dance
Center, a very nice school here in New York
City, on a regular basis. I also do fashion
shoots. When they approached me for Strike
a Pose in 2013, I had just nished working
on Longchamp. I did that for two seasons so
mostly teaching but also doing a lot of fashion
productions.

Madonnas Blond Ambition Tour dancers, made famous in the lm Truth or Dare, reunited for
Strike a Pose. Clockwise from left are Luis Camacho, Oliver Crumes, Carlton Wilborn, Kevin
Stea, Salim Gauwloos and Jose Gutierez.

BLADE: Do you feel shes a bit aloof with

you guys or do you think thats just the way
any major star would pretty much be?
GAUWLOOS: I dont know. After 25 years,
you know, its a long time. People go on with
their life and deal with things in dierent ways.
I mean I just knew sitting there she wasnt
going to run up to us and be like, Oh my
God, you know? I knew that was not going to
happen. Its not really in her character to be
like that.

changing for the next number. That you were

like, OK, now I cant breathe. (laughs)

BLADE: Is it true (Truth or Dare director)

Alek Keshishian said all the hundreds of hours
of outtakes got accidentally deleted?
GAUWLOOS: Not deleted, but nobody
knows where it is.

BLADE: Did you bulk up for the tour or were

you always kind of built like that?
GAUWLOOS: Starting out in Antwerp,
Belgium as a dancer I was really skinny. Then I
came to America, I got a little bit bigger. For the
tour we were supposed to go to the gym but
of course we never went. It was just the cruel
rehearsal schedule that kind of got everybody
in shape. Its like 10 hours of dancing, how can
you not be in shape from that? Thats how I got
bigger and more muscular. I denitely didnt
look like that when we started, denitely not.

BLADE: I thought it was lame when the

Blu-ray release came out a few years ago they
didnt put like 20 minutes or a half-hour of
outtakes on it as bonus material. That would
have been fun to see.
GAUWLOOS: Supposedly all these people
claim not to know where it is. Its lost.
BLADE: Was there any dance move or
routine that was especially tricky to learn for
the tour?
GAUWLOOS: Well I had to learn to vogue,
but it wasnt particularly dicult. The only
people who knew what that even was before
were Luis, Jose and Madonna, who hired
them. Being a classically trained dancer, it
wasnt really a challenge but it was one thing
I had to learn.
BLADE: By the end, were you drenched
in sweat and exhausted or were you in such
great shape that you werent?
GAUWLOOS: People always think the
numbers I was featured in like Express
Yourself or the Dick Tracy part would be the
most exhausting but those were the ones
you could enjoy more. The most exhausting
number to do was Like a Prayer because
we had this whole big number while shes

BLADE: Do you have any mementos from

the tour? Any costumes or anything?
GAUWLOOS: I did but I lost all of them,
just having moved so many times. When we
started shooting Strike a Pose, they were
like, Show us some pictures and I was like,
I dont have anything. Its kind of sad. Only in
my head.

BLADE: Did you grow up Catholic?

GAUWLOOS: No, not really. My mom
would say she was Catholic but we never
went to church. It was just kind of like, Well,
we walk by the church. But denitely not.
My father was Muslim. Im half Moroccan. He
was from Morocco but he passed away and
was only in my life a couple years and then he
disappeared. Im a little bit of everything but I
dont go to church or practice.
BLADE: So did all the religious imagery in
the show resonate with you at all?
GAUWLOOS: No, it was more of a theatrical
thing for me with the crosses and the lights. I
never felt like, Oh my God, this is sacrilegious
or anything. I just saw it as a show. I was
probably the least knowledgeable about how
controversial and taboo it was for the time.
BLADE: Carlton was on The Girlie Show,
Madonnas next tour. What were you doing by

93 and was there any discussion or possibility

of any of the rest of you touring with Madonna
again?
GAUWLOOS: No. The ride was over after
everything was done with Madonna and I
realized I had my own reality to deal with being
HIV. I was just going through life really. I really
partied so I didnt have to deal with being HIV
and it was like a really dark period for me for
like six-seven years.
BLADE: How did you get through it?
GAUWLOOS: When I really got my shit
together was in 2000. I met my husband and
fell in love, that was it. That changed my whole
life around. But before that, Id been diagnosed
in 1987 and then I ended up in the hospital in
1997 with a really bad pneumonia. I didnt do
any treatment for 10 years, I just couldnt deal
with it. So I ended up in the hospital and that
was really a reality check and a wakeup call. I
dont know, this is awfully personal, but I also
had some issues with my working papers too.
I was HIV-positive so I didnt want to go to the
hospital and get deported. Thats one of the
reasons I never went. Thats also why coming
out with my story, Im sure there are a lot of
people in my situation.
BLADE: Tell me about your husband.
GAUWLOOS: He got my heart, you know?
His name is Facundo Gabba. Hes from
Argentina. He just came into my life and blew
me away. When I was diagnosed it was still the
80s and people were dropping like ies. You
cant imagine what it was like to have some
guy come in and telling you this with your
mother sitting there. They said, You have the
HIV virus and youve probably got about ve
years. So the rst thing was like, Oh my God,
Im 18, what did I do wrong? It was a really
dark, dark, dark thing. Thank God the whole
Madonna experience happened because I
needed something to hold onto. You think,
Whos going to love me?, but you can be HIV
and nd love. That was the biggest thing for
me to learn.

BLADE: Did you go to Gabriels funeral?

GAUWLOOS: No. I didnt know right away
that hed died. But since Strike a Pose, Ive
been in contact with his mother, Sue, who is
really nice. Its almost like being in touch with
Gabriel. Shes such a sweet woman. We talk
and its been a great experience going to her
house in San Francisco. I get to nd out more
about Gabriel. Its really beautiful.
BLADE: Have you followed Madonnas
career? Did you ever go see her other tours?
GAUWLOOS: I never went to her shows,
but Id watch her on YouTube here and there
if she had new stu. I liked The Girlie Show
and I thought The Confessions Tour where
she came out of the disco ball and had all
the Steven Klein stu with the horses and
everything was beautiful.
BLADE: One thing that came up when
Oliver, Kevin and Gabriel sued Madonna
over Truth or Dare was a claim that they
didnt know it was going to be made into
this big thing and so on. But you guys
saw Alek and his team around constantly.
Wasnt that claim somewhat naive?
GAUWLOOS: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I dont
know what all they sued for. They all
sued for dierent things. What wasnt
clear was that we were not going to make
any money from Truth or Dare and we
didnt. At the end of the day, thats what
it came down to. To this day, weve never
made a penny from Truth or Dare. Im
not saying that to be shady or mean, its
just a fact. Did I sue? No, no. If its that
important to somebody, I dont know. Im
just not a suing person I think, especially
for something like that.
BLADE: Aside from your work with
Madonna, what are you most proud of?
GAUWLOOS: Ugh, thats a tough
question. I dont know. I think the most
proud thing would be being a dancer and
still to this day, always having a voice and
not really changing my belief system of
dancing and everything. As an artist, Ive
always believed in myself. I may ask other
people for advice, but at the end of the
day, Ive always listened to myself rst.

series on the rookies and veterans, who
make up the LGBT-inclusive sports teams
in D.C., we take a look at two gay players
from the Capital Splats.
Kevin Morris has moved up two divisions
since he started playing with the Capital
Splats in 2014. He is one of the softball
players who has joined the league and
has been playing with the Chesapeake
and Potomac Softball League since 2005
along with stints playing with Stonewall
Dodgeball and the Capital Area Rainbowlers
Association.
I played racquetball recreationally in
college and always saw the Splats at Capital
Pride, Morris says. I put my name on their
sign-up sheet several times and nally
joined after I heard a friend talking about
them.
Morris grew up in Springeld, Va., where
his sports focus was on baseball and
tennis. While he was earning his degree at
Longwood University, he played racquetball
and ag football. After teaching for 12
years, he switched to administration and is
now working as an assistant principal.
Even though he gets exercise from
participating in multiple sports, Morris
nds he gets something extra from playing
racquetball.
Racquetball is an amazing cardio
workout and it makes me feel healthy,
Morris says. It is much more enjoyable
than spending time on an elliptical.
Another plus for Morris is that the Splats
league doesnt run on a set schedule. The
players reach out to each other to schedule
their matches which are all contested at

the Washington D.C. Jewish Community

Center. Along with league play, the players
are oered coaching from veteran players
and are able to have matches outside of
the league with players who have higher
skill sets.
I like playing people who are better than
me as long as it is competitive, Morris says.
This sport is like chess at 100 miles per
hour and you have to stay ahead of your
opponents thought process. If the other
guy is sweating and out of breath, then I
know I am doing my job.
Mark Storey is a former commissioner
with the Capital Tennis Association and
when he co-founded the Capital Splats in
2010, it was in a vein similar to the tennis
template.
I was playing in a racquetball league
in Virginia, but there was nothing being
oered in D.C. for the LGBT community,
Storey says. We were able to work out a
special deal with the JCC to get the league
started.
Storey is from Des Moines, Iowa and
competed in football, basketball and track
& eld on his high school team. Sports
were put on the back burner, except for
recreational racquetball, while he earned
his degrees at Georgetown University
in Russian area studies. Hes employed
as a consultant with an international
development rm.
The next season for the Splats begins
on Oct. 1 and to make the transition
easier for new athletes, the veteran
players meet with the rookie players for
an orientation clinic.
I think it is an easy sport to pick up,
Storey says. We oer a variety of things
outside of league play such as doubles,
cut-throat and in-house tournaments. It
gives the players a chance to experience all
aspects of the sport and to meet the other
players.
As for Storey, he continues to enjoy the
sport for many reasons including as a path
to recovery from an injury.
I broke my leg a few years ago and
racquetball is a very ecient way to get an
all-body workout, he says. Plus, I have a
competitive streak and this sport helps to
feed that need.

What presidential race means for D.C. market

Impact of Clinton v. Trump
likely to be small
By ALLISON GOODHART DuSHUTTLE
Most people believe when a new administration comes into oce after an
election, the oodgates open and there is
a frenzy of new inventory on the market.
They think new buyers are moving into
town snatching them up.
In reality? There are about 7,000 political appointments to be made but most
dont come from out of town. Many people
who are hired to be a part of the new administration are, as they say, Washington
insiders, already living in the area regardless of who is in power. Some that come
to work in the administration will keep
their homes in their home state and return after they serve. They primarily end
up renting while in D.C. So these new area
residents dont really aect the housing
market either way. The change in administration causes a small bump but it is not
signicant in the re-sale sector.
But, elections do have an impact on the
D.C. housing market.
Traditionally, we will see a later start to
the fall market, which normally begins in
mid-September. In presidential election
years, things tend to stay a bit quiet until
the election. Then, we usually see a very
active November and December, months
that are usually quiet in non-presidential
election years.
Why? Three reasons.
Of course, our area is home to a very
high percentage of people that work in

and around politics. Its fair to say they are

often preoccupied with presidential and
congressional races. This is one factor.
However, a bigger factor is non-political
federal government employees. Campaigning in the last few elections has
meant talk of reducing the decit and cutting government programs. Such discussions give many federal employees pause.
Will their department be reduced or cut?
The same holds true for government contractors.
Something similar happened during the
government shutdown. We saw the market come to a crawl when government
workers who have always felt secure in
their positions start to worry their jobs
werent as secure as they always believed.
While federal employment is stable compared to many other sectors, elections
tend to shake that up a bit. Once the election is over and the results sink in, things
can open back up.
The biggest factor in a slower fall market is general lack of stability and an abundance of negativity. The more negative the
campaigns, the more insecure the general
population feels both in D.C. and around
the country. This insecurity can negatively
impact the real estate market.
People buy houses when they are happy and condent. With the 24-hour news
cycle, that happy, condent feeling has become more dicult to achieve in an election year.
So, how does the Clinton v. Trump election compare to past elections? Much is
the same but perhaps with some more
uncertainty.
The change in administration will con-

How will the race between HILLARY CLINTON and DONALD TRUMP impact the local real
estate market? Probably less than you think.

tinue to be an almost non-issue. However,

as we have seen, this race is anything but
ordinary. Both candidates propose increases in government spending. Regardless of whether you believe this is a good
or bad thing for our country, it does bode
well for those in federal government positions, and in turn for our local real estate
market.
On the other hand, Trumps ongoing battles with the Washington political elites and insiders might mean more
people coming into the area and fewer
D.C.-area politicos being picked for appointments. Or, perhaps not. One never
knows. But even if that were the case, as
mentioned above many of these appointees from out of town decide to rent so the
impact wont be too great.
The lower approval ratings of both candidates, combined with instability around
the globe, do hint at a slower fall market.

Though its early in the election, this race

already promises to be negative, which
doesnt help with consumer condence.
On the positive side, we have not seen
a slow-down as of yet, other than the typical congressional recess slow-down, which
happens every year. We will be keeping a
close watch on the campaigns, the stock
market and the reactions of our clients.
Regardless of what happens in the leadup to the election and if we end up having a
President Clinton or a President Trump, we
anticipate a busier than normal November
and December, once campaign ads are replaced with ads for holiday shopping.
