the alternative press.

Journalists often used newspapers as a way to oppose the new


government.

Law passed by congress in 1978, were the federal governments first


attempt to control its critics.

Anyone who went against congress wishes and printed false


scandalous writings could be fined $2,000 and jailed for two years.

Several journalists went to jail.
