Daastaango:
Daastaangoi has its origin in the Persian language. Daastaan means a tale; the suffix
-goi makes the word mean "to tell a tale".
Daastaangoi
Daastaangoi is a 16th century Urdu oral storytelling art form. The art form was revived
in 2005 and has been performed in India, Pakistan, and the United States. Indian poet
and Urdu critic Shams Ur Rahman Faruqi and his nephew, writer and director
Mahmood Farooqui, have played significant roles in its revival in the 21st century.
At the centre of daastaangoi is the daastaango, or storyteller, whose voice is his main
artistic tool in orally recreating the daastaan or the story.
Indian urban anthropologist Ghaus Ansari ascribed the origin of daastaangoi to
Pre-Islamic Arabia, and detailed how the eastward spread of Islam carried dastangoi
to Iran and then to Delhi in India. From Delhi, daastaangoi made its way to Lucknow in
the 18th century, aided by the Indian Rebellion of 1857, during which several artists,
writers and daastaangos moved from Delhi to Lucknow.
The early daastaangois told tales of magic, war and adventure, and borrowed freely
from other stories such as the Arabian Nights, storytellers such as Rumi, and storytelling traditions such as the Panchatantra. From the 14th century, Persian daastaangois
started focusing on the life and adventures of Amir Hamza. The Indian stream of
daastaangoi added storytelling elements such as aiyyari (trickery) to these tales.
The narration is interspersed with dialogue and one cannot help being impressed with
the storytellers memory. One doesnt see them fumbling for words.

Reviews
These tales of romance, magic and Herculean valor rekindled the splendor of tales
spun during the 18th 19th century. []The storytellers who came from Karachi
especially belonged to a league of their own they left us all spell-bound.

The diction, gestures and intonation of both orators were so superbly in sync with the
genre and the era they were portraying that even the people who may have no prior
knowledge of the Tilism chronicles were left with a newfound interest in Urdu fantasy
literature. This was exactly the effect that the team of Olomopolo hoped the reading
would have on the viewers.
