CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
In todays world, everything is in a hurry. People and businesses are moving faster to
attain their respective goals. The needs of enterprises are drastically changing as the economys
needs are also changing. Customers want better and faster services while the businesses wanted
to streamline and improved their operations for increased performance. Today, these goals are
easier to attain with the advent of digital devices and the internet. The importance of digital
devices (such as computers and smart phones) and the internet in business is to reduce
manpower, to save time, and ultimately save money.
The main purpose of this project is to develop an online reservation/booking website
system for hotel establishments. The goal is to provide the establishments with an attractive
website that will let the customers to reserve/book hotel rooms online. The website will also
serve as the digital equivalent of the hotels, complete with pictures and details of the amenities.
BACKGROUND
In the past, the only way to reserve a room for a hotel is to either go to the hotel itself or
to call the hotline of the hotel if there is any. Nevertheless, these procedures are both
inconvenient and inefficient to the customer and to the establishment. These procedures led the
establishment to make additional operating expenses for the extra personnel and resources.
Furthermore, this process tends to be unattractive for the customers as people are more engaged
in new digital multimedia technologies.
By using an online reservation/booking website system, the hotel establishments will
leverage itself to the online world. It will provide new avenue for growth and it will reach new
customers that are normally unreachable in typical ways. The establishment will operate more
efficiently as there is no need to hire more than one customer service representative. The
expenses in computer, telephone, and other equipment will also be lessened as the website
system will require fewer resources.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

After a thorough research, I have come to the conclusion that hotel establishments will
benefit from this kind of website system. The establishments wanted to be present in online
world to be able to reach more customers and to facilitate customers in booking rooms. The
establishments also want to be online as a way to advertise their brand.
The problems that establishments encountered with the old procedures are the cost in
personnel and resources. The establishments need to maintain more than one customer service
representative. Additional expenses are brought by the equipment that the old procedure requires.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project are to:
Design a website with a user-friendly interface.
Design a website that will advertise all the necessary details of the hotels.
Develop a system that will let customer book hotel rooms online.
SCOPE
The scope of this project includes the design of the website interface (HTML and CSS),
the client-side scripting language (JavaScript), the server-side scripting language (PHP), and to
some extent the database.
LIMITATION
This project will not thoroughly discuss the database component (MySQL) of the website
since this is outside the scope of the subject. Furthermore, the project will not discuss the
algorithm of the payment method since this will include other third-party propriety applications
and source code that are not within the scope of the subject. Lastly, this project will not discuss
the process of publishing the website in the Internet with real web server.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY
The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) was the approach used for the website
application development. The SDLC has five step-by-step phases; the Planning Phase, Analysis
Phase, Design Phase, Implementation Phase and Maintenance Phase.
In the Planning Phase, all the work and activities were defined; the developers make sure
that all processes of the project are clear. The scope of the project was identified as well as
ensured that the project is feasible
The second Phase is the Analysis Phase; after defining all the problems identified upon
planning, the developers tried to understand all the business needs of the subject establishments
by gathering credible information, defining and prioritizing all necessary requirements, and
reviewing several recommendations given by the people working in the particular business.
The Design Phase, based on the result of the second phase, the developers designed the
website interface and the database needed. Coding guidelines and languages to be used were
identified and implemented as well other software requirements.
Implementation Phase, in this phase, the proposed website application is finally built,
tested and implemented. The group implements all the software components, verify and test all
the website features, and documented all necessary information.
The last is Maintenance Phase; the developers will make sure that the proposed website
application will run productively following its time of initial implementation. In addition, to
expand the capabilities of the website, an upgrade will be made and enhancements of the features
will be carried out upon request.

ANALYTICAL TOOLS

There are several tools used by the developers to determine the flow of data in the
proposed website application. The following are the different analytical tools used in the project.
Data Flow Diagram
Our group was able to analyze the flow of data within the website; this is to map
how the website database operates, from data inputs, entity as sender and as receiver of
data inputs, the data storage and the processes being made in the system.
Context Diagram
Using this diagram, the group would like to illustrate the general view of the
proposed website application.
Entity-Relationship-Diagram (ERD)
To fully illustrate the database of the website, how the data are organized, an ER
Diagram will be used by our group. The diagram represents all the entities involved in the
website database, the relationship of those entities as well the attributes/properties of each
entity involved.

CHAPTER III
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES AND OUTPUTS

Research Procedure
The descriptive method of research was utilized in this project. It enabled the researchers
to describe the subject matter in detailed way.
A survey questionnaire was disseminated to individuals, where relevant questions were
emphasized.
Observations were conducted within the hotel establishments; this is to study the sales
processes as well as the booking procedures of the hotel.
Interviews were made on key personnel of the hotel establishments; this was made to get
further details on the business process.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

The application of the Internet in the business world has become a major trend in practice
and generated a hot stream of research in the recent literature. The Internet, as a collection of
interconnected computer networks, provides free exchanging of information. Today, millions of
computer networks worldwide are communicating with each other (Napier, Judd, Rivers, and
Wagner, 2001). As such, the Internet has become a powerful channel for business marketing and
communication (Palmer, 1999), and for new business opportunities - as it is often called as "ebusiness" or "e-commerce" today (Schneider & Perry, 2001). This new e-business or ecommerce virtual marketplace allows small companies competing with business giants by just
having a better web presentation of their products/services. Under the same wave, online
customers can enjoy a wider choice of products or services, more competitive prices, and being
able to buy their favorite items/services from the sellers located thousands miles away. It
provides communication between consumers and companies and through electronic data
interchange (EDI), buyers and sellers can exchange standard business transactions such as
invoices or purchase orders with remarkable ease.
The hotel industry is certainly fully aware of this trend and is willing to contribute its
share in this effort. In fact, the industry has realized that during those early forays into
cyberspace, the industry didnt view e-booking strategically (many hotels simply considered
online room bookings at the time as a way to pick up additional business by selling distressed
inventory on third-party online travel agencies), and handed over too much control of inventory
and pricing to those third party online travel agencies. Now the industry is in the unenviable
position of trying to take back the reins after early shopping patterns have been established.
While the pressure to sell their inventory rooms online will be continuing, the industry has
developed its new online strategy striving to get a better grip on this emerging marketing
channel. (http://www.iima.org/CIIMA/CIIMA%20V3%20N1%201%20Yang.pdf)

Online system has evolved to be a cornerstone in support of computer software users of

all kinds. It is an electronic interactive system that delivers information to users via the Internet
to personal computers (PCs), smart phones, and other digital devices. These services provide

information, usually in text form, about news, education, business, entertainment, shopping, and
more. Some also provide message services and graphic and audio information.

Related Studies
Stuart (1995) in a study entitled International Reservations Systems - Their Strategic and
Operational Implications for the UK Hotel Industry presented details of the method and results
of an investigation of the role and influence of international reservations systems within the UK
hotel industry. The research comprised three questionnaire surveys of the use of computer
reservations systems and distribution services by UK hotels. These were analyzed and produced
an indication of general use of systems and the contribution which these currently make to hotel
groups and consortia. The work also included a study of developments in access methods and
changes in buyer behavior as observed by representatives of computer reservation and
distribution system, travel agency, hotel representation and intermediary companies.
The case study made by Jiaqin Yang, Jan Flynn and Krista Anderson of Georgia College
and State University (2005) aimed to describe some recent development of e-business
application in the hospitality industry ( e.g. travel industry, and recreational entities) and
illustrate with two case studies. One is about a local hotel industrys effort to use the Internet to
boost its local market. Another describes the operations and its competitive strategy of an
emerging online travel agency. The research objective is to investigate the trends and level of
prevalence of application of the Internet in the hospitality industry focusing on some emerging
issues and challenges.

CHAPTER IV
THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

The proposed system is a website that will advertise the hotel establishments. In addition,
the website will show all the necessary details of the hotels different rooms, amenities, services,
and their respective room packages and prices. An important feature of the website is that it will
let the user to reserved his/her chosen room package and pay it online through credit card, debit
card, and PayPal. The user must choose the room package he/she has chosen then click the
reserved button and fill up the form. After that, an option will let the user to choose a payment
method. After a payment method has chosen, the user is ask to fill up additional information in
the form then the check out button must be click in order to finish the transaction. A confirmation
page will be displayed showing whether the transaction is success or not.
SYSTEM CODING
Design and Scripting
The group used HTML and CSS to design the website interface along with JavaScript for
the client-side scripting and PHP for the server-side scripting to make the website dynamic and
interactive.
Other Tools
The group used MySQL to create the database of the website. MySQL database is
supported by PHP. The group used Notepad++ to encode all of the websites components. For the
testing, the group used XAMPP web server to test the system. XAMPP is an open source web
server that supports MySQL and PHP.

TESTING PLAN
The testing will be conducted by the group to make sure that the website application will
meet all the requirements of the developers. The group will test the application using simulated

data (Alpha Testing) and the completed product will be tested before implementing it in real
world.

The group will prepare and check whether the computer server meets the minimum
hardware requirements for the system to work properly. This includes the network connection of
the establishments to the Internet Service Provider (ISP), Operating System, RAM, HDD, etc
Software Preparation
This includes the installation of the needed software for the system to work properly and
for maintenance purpose. This includes the installation of PHP, MySQL, and Apache Server to
the computer server. This also includes the arrangements of folders and files (images, HTML,
PHP, CSS files, etc) to the computer server.
Miscellaneous
Other preparations will also be conducted such as the ventilation system for the computer
server, the fail-safe system for the computer server, the security system (Firewall, password,
etc), the integration of other propriety and third party software and source code for the
payment methods and other advance features, and the training of the designated website admin.
