THE LORDS SUPPER

(THE COMMUNION SHORT NOTES)

REV. SAMPSON OWUSU

Introducing the Lords Supper

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, generally
accepts two sacraments as those instituted by our
Lord Jesus Christ:

BAPTISM

THE LORDS SUPPER

The second sacrament has many names and it includes;

THE LORDS SUPPER

HOLY COMMUNION
THE EUCHARIST
BREAKING OF THE BREAD.
The essence of this sacrament, no matter the name given to it, is captured in an aspect of
what it stands for.

What is the Holy Communion?

The Holy Communion is a communal meal in the church
where Christians gather around the Lords table to receive
the Body and blood of Jesus the Christ and to give thanks
to God the father for what he has accomplished through
Jesus Christ his Son in terms of redemption and the
sanctification of all believers.

What is the holy communion?

In the Holy Communion the real
presence of the crucified and risen
Christ is revealed to the Christian and
Christ gives his life for all humanity.
This is why all of us should be
concerned about the fact that not all
of us have the opportunity to share
together in the holy communion.

Matthew 28:19-20
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all
that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you
always, to the end of the age. (ESV)
Acts 2:41-42
41 So

those who received his word were baptized, and there

were added that day about three thousand souls.

42 And

they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching

and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the
prayers. (ESV)

1 Corinthians 11:27-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

27 Whoever,

therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of

the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty
concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person
examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink
of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without
discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on
himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and
some have died.[a] 31 But if we judged[b]ourselves truly, we
would not be judged.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of
a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's
wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him
who has done this be removed from among you.
3 For

though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I

have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a
thing.4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my
spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this
man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be
saved in the day of the Lord.[a]

6 Your

boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole
lump? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are
unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore
celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with
the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9I

wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people 10 not at
all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or
idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing
to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of
sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindlernot
even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not
those inside the church[b] whom you are to judge? 13 God judges[c] those
outside. Purge the evil person from among you.
