Misconceptions and Lesser Known
Facts
  Not everyone who is DEAF is DUMB, and vice-versa.

  Many deaf can read lips and talk back.

  Deaf people can not hear if you talk loud.

  Majority of the deaf people don’t have any cognitive disabilities or


intellectual limitations.

  Not all people who start to lose their hearing are old.

  Deaf people can talk on the phone.

  Sign language is not the same as Braille!

  Sign language differs in every country.

About

  Corliss Institute was created by a family whose deaf child


could not be well-served by agencies and institutions that
existed in the mid-1970s and later.

  Those who live here and/or receive services should not be


called clients. The word Member has been used since
Corliss began, because it shows the importance of being
involved and included for all of our Members.

Mission

The Mission of Corliss Institute, Inc. is to provide social


habilitation and employment services to deaf people with
diverse disabilities and others with unique communication
needs in an independence and empowerment-based model
that facilitates living, learning and working successfully
as integrated members of the community.

Members

  Promote empowerment and independence among members.

  Some members are extremely independent, while others rely


on staff supports for 2 – 24 hours daily

  Most of the members are deaf, but some members are


hearing, hard of hearing, late deafened or dumb.

  All
members have at least minimal manual communication
capacity and/or ASL skills.

  In
addition to deafness, a few members share a broad and
diverse range of disabilities and conditions.
