A Part of the Community

A Reflection Paper on Community Service

Helping out others through a community service had made me learn about others as well
as myself. Being a host of a seminar in a community made me see the importance of community
service. Community service is not just a service required for a student complete his/her
requirements to graduate in the university but a thing that one needs to reach out to the people
outside the university, to train students on how to deal with other people and help the community
on the things it needs.
The community service that we had done was a seminar about the uses of herbal
medicines since the community of Barangay Dila, Bay, Laguna has a large resource of herbal
plants that they do not know how and when to use. We had given the seminar to the senior
citizens of the Barangay who enthusiastically participated in our seminar. This thing is a sort of
simple thing for the youth since we know how to use internet to get information about things like
these but through this seminar, we have seen the senior citizens do not get much access to the
internet as compared to us. This made me think that we as the new generations should took
responsibility in sharing these advancements to the elder community.
Another thing I learned is the importance of connection, communication and cooperation.
The community service is not just a one way communication where we give seminar and they
learn but is a two way where the community learned something and the service giver also learns
something through the experience and through the opinions of the community.
This seminar taught me that the smallest favours I do for someone can make a great
impact especially when it is done wholeheartedly and not asking for any return. I feel happy to
be able to help the community learn something and share to them the knowledge about the things

we had known and have them benefit from the nature. There is many things that I can do for the
community even in little things. Not everyone know the things that can be accessed through
advancements and do work without pay but doing a service like this made me grow as a person
and develop my skills. When speaking in front of a large crowd, I usually stutter and get nervous
all the time that even makes me quiver sometimes but through this activity I managed to control
my nervousness and speak actively and merrily in front of the senior citizens that gave us good
responses.
Lastly, the most important thing that community service taught me was if every one of us
would just give off some of our time to help each other we could do so much in our world. We
had done a very small favour by giving the senior citizens a brief seminar on how to use the
plants for medicinal purposes but some community services do things like cleaning the
community. Imagine if we every citizens share informations like these with each other every one
in the world will be knowledgeable. Also if everyone in this place do favours for each other even
in small things, the community will be a better and friendlier place to live in.
In conclusion, this community service helped me to be a better person open to the needs
of the community. Even though, our class is finished, I will never quit in helping others and the
community. In helping others, I am also helping myself to be open to the community and see the
needs of every individual I meet and make a positive connection to the world I am living. It
makes me know my part in the community not just a bystander seeing the problems of the
community but a helper that knows what is happening and deals with the needs of the
community without having hesitations in my actions to help the community grow to a better
environment to live in.
