metering precision can be digitally verified.

2.

Active energy, reactive and apparent energy metering through data

provided by energy measuring integrated chips. 4-Tariffs and total
energy metering of active energy, reactive and apparent energy.
Energy displays up to 9 digits, with decimal points configurable.

3.

Energy displays up to 9 digits, decimal points configurable from 0 to

4 digits. User can select to display Primary values or Secondary values.

4.

Pulse indication of energy metering using two LEDs, which indicate

active energy kWh and reactive energy kvarh. 2 Channel of impulses
output, the pulse width is 80 milliseconds.

5.

Meter can keep on operating and recording as long as voltage exists

on any two terminal of the meter with or without neutral.

6.

The import and export energy definition can be customized. For

instance, import active energy can be configured to include both
import and export value. Import reactive energy can be defined as
Quadrant 1 + Quadrant 2, or Quadrant 1 + Quadrant 3.

7.

Three phase sum energy definition is also customizable. It can be

defined as the sum of the absolute values from each phase: Sum = |
Phase A | + | Phase B | + | Phase C |, or as the algebra sum of the
values from each phase: Sum = Phase A + Phase B + Phase C.

8.

The import/export reactive energy definition is configurable. For

instance, the import reactive energy can record any lagging reactive
energy (Quadrant 1 + Quadrant 3) separately, export reactive energy
can record any leading reactive energy (Quadrant 2 + Quadrant 4)
separately, and have the total reactive energy register for Quadrant 1
+ Quadrant 2 + Quadrant 3 + Quadrant 4.

9.

All these values can be programmed to display on LCD or read from

communication ports.

2.2. Maximum Demand Indication

1.

be set to 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. If demand cycle is set to 60

minutes, sliding interval can only be set to 2, 3, or 5 minutes. Demand
cycle must be multiples of the rolling interval.
Block Mode: demand cycle can be set to 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes.
3.

Each average power of maximum demand cycle is calculated and

recorded, which can be read through load profile.

4.

While recording the apparent maximum demand kVA, P2000 also

records the simultaneous active average power of the cycle, which
can be used to calculate the power factor of the maximum demand
cycle.

5.

P2000 can record total and 4-tariff (default, 4-tariff optionally)

cumulative maximum demand (kW/kvar).

14. Load Control (OPTIONAL)

P2000 series support load control on whole current meters
Note that the whole current meter requires the optional internal power
relay (aka. contactor) module for disconnect and reconnect functions. The
9th digit of the model code indicates the load control support.
P2000 can disconnect and reconnect on demand or on schedule. It supports
automatic trip actions and retry logic based on programmable load limits
and/or power quality events. The load control functionalities can be
configured both locally and remotely.
1.

P2000 whole current meter controls the internal relay / contactor.

2.

P2000 supports on-demand disconnect or reconnect commands

from configuration software/ hand-held units (HHU) via the optical/
RS485 port, or from the AMI AMR software (e.g. Microstar TMR system)
via GPRS/GSM telecom.

3.

P2000 supports scheduled load control. Two types of schedules are

supported:
a.

The internal contactor can be switched off/on at scheduled

date/time for load shedding.

b.

The trip action can be configured by load limit per tariff, or by

power quality events, such as Over Voltage Limit, Over Current
Limit etc.

4.

For automatic trip actions, P2000 can reconnect the load after a
configurable/programmable interval (default is 3 minutes), either
automatically, or by pushing a button in the home display unit H1000
(if installed, and can be enabled/disabled). Meter will however
disconnect again if the defined limits are still exceeded after reconnect.

5.

A configurable/programmable retry count limit (default is 3 times) can

be set. If the retry count has been exceeded, the meter will be locked
out for a configurable/programmable duration, or until manually
reconnected by utility operators locally or remotely.

6.

A buzzer sound will be given by the home display unit (aka split meter)
if installed when the configured limit has been exceeded as a warning/
indication to the end customer.(Optional)

7.

Load control can be enabled and disabled by utility operators.

8.

The load control functionalities can be configured both locally via the
optical/RS485 port, and remotely from Microstar TMR (AMR/AMI)
system.

9.

To protect the meter against tampering, the meter will cut off power
supply upon terminal cover open. The meter wont reconnect if the
disconnect is triggered by the terminal cover open event. The meter
will remain disconnected until a utility operator or engineer enters an

15. Prepayment Mode (OPTIONAL)

P2000 can optionally work as a prepayment meter. With the prepayment
option, P2000 calculates the payment amount in real-time, and
disconnect/reconnect users based on the available balance. P2000 can be
configured to work as prepayment or post-payment mode.
For the prepayment meters that also include the GSM/GPRS option, remote
AMI/AMM servers can monitor the account balance and energy usage data
in real-time. The charge amount and account balance will be calculated
independently on the server side as double check and fail-safe. The remote
servers can also control the relay connection remotely. This combined
option of prepayment and GPRS module provides extra reliability and
manageability.
P2000 works with the H1000 in-house display unit when working as a
prepayment meter. The combination of the two provides better user
experience for the consumer, as they can monitor their account status from
the convenience of their home. The H1000 enables users to use STS keyentry or contactless smart card to recharge their account. With the smart
card recharging option, it is possible to bring back account information,
meter usage data and event logs with the card. This feature allows utility
to retrieve meter information and build user account profile in a very costeffective way.

1. Flexible tariff modes

a.

Time of Day(TOD) Tariff:

P2000 can record and store energy consumption on 4 TOD tariff
rates. The time periods and tariff rates of the TOD recordings
can be configured locally via the portable devices, or remotely
through the AMI/AMM server (if available).

b.

Step Tariff:
P2000 can record and store up to 10 step tariff rates at the meter
end for both online and offline communications. The step rate
boundaries can be modified by portable devices, or via recharge
code/smart cards, or through GSM/GPRS communication (if
available).
It can define three tariff classes or categories, namely Residential,
Non-residential and Free-zone of consumers.

c.

Tax / Duty / Levis:

Utility companies can define a tax percentage through the online
vending system. This shall be levied on the amount of the energy
consumed.

d.

Monthly Fixed Charges:

Vending system can define the monthly fixed charges for the
applicable tariff.
e.

Fixed Charges:
P2000 can deduct fixed charges on a daily or monthly basis such
as meter rent. The fixed charges can be defined using the online
vending system.

2. User-friendly control features

a.

Emergency Credit:
P2000 can be programmed with an emergency credit. With this
value configured, user can push a button on the in-home display
unit to resume power supply after being cut off due to not
enough credit.
After the power supply is resumed, the meter will continue to
charge the account until it reaches the emergency credit limit.
When the emergency credit is also exhausted, P2000 meter will
disconnect the load again. This time pressing the button on the
home display unit will not reconnect the power supply.
The load will be reconnected only when the user recharges the
account that the available credit is enough to pay for the next
kWh unit(s) to be consumed. The emergency credit limit will be
reset when the power supply resumes.
The emergency credit can be set to zero to disable the feature.

b.

Vital Necessity Power:

P2000 allows configuring a predefined power to disconnected
customer in case of vital necessity (such as lighting or heating in
winter). When the current power is lower than the vital necessity
power, even if the available credit is lower than the disconnect
threshold, or even negative, the meter will not disconnect the
consumer. However if the current power is higher than the vital
necessity power, and the available credit is below the disconnect
threshold, the meter will disconnect the user.

c.

Friendly Hours & Dates:

P2000 can be programmed to allow friendly hours or dates. All
of the following types can be independently turn on or turn off.

No disconnections on weekends (i.e. Saturdays/Sundays,

configurable).

No disconnections during night hours (i.e. 6 PM to 6 AM,

configurable).

No disconnections on holidays as per calendar year on meter (i.e.

New Years Day or other public holiday, configurable).

4. Refund of Balance
Refund the balance/vending amount from P2000 is supported
(Optional). The amount to be left in the meter when withdrawing a
final amount from meter is configurable.

5. STS Prepayment Mode (OPTIONAL)

P2000 is compliant to the STS specifications for prepayment meters,
including the STS algorithm (IEC62055-41), which has a set of security
management mechanisms.
Users can purchase electricity, and input the credit into the meter via
the 20-digit STS token. P2000 subtracts the account credit value upon
electricity consumption. When the account balance drops below zero
or the configured threshold, P2000 will automatically cut off the power
supply.
1)

Open an account
Before using P2000 as prepayment meter, an account must be
opened. Utility operators will set the necessary parameters,
including the meter/user ID, the meter key, and the initial power
credit if any. Typically a customer account/profile will be created
in the power vending system, and associated with the meter ID.
After the configurations, the meter will be ready to use. Once
the customers start consuming electricity, P2000 meters will
subtract the account credit based on the tariff settings.

2)

Recharge account:
Customers can recharge the account by purchasing power from
the power vending system. The power vending system generates
20-digit tokens, based on user/meter information, purchase date
and credit amount. Users shall enter the token into the meter via

22

MICROSTAR

Three Phase Energy Meter P2000 Manual

keyboard entry in the home display unit or via swiping the smart
card (OPTIONAL).
Upon receiving the 20-digit token, P2000 will decode the token
and perform all the necessary authentications per STS
specifications. Once the token was accepted as authentic and
valid, the purchased credit will be added to the available account
credit in the meter secure storage. At the same time, the
purchased amount and the new account balance will be
displayed on LCD to provide user feedback that the recharge is
successful.
Each token can only be accepted once.
3)

Negative balance:
In case of negative balance, due to friendly credit, or emergency
credit, or other overdraft consumptions, the purchased amount
will be applied to cover the debt first. The meter will reconnect
the power supply only if the new balance after deducting the
debt is positive or higher than the configured threshold.

4)

Steps for customers to purchase power credits:

a) Visit the local vending office, and provide the meter/ user
ID (Smart card) to the operator.
b) Inform operator the purchase amount and make the
payment.
c) Obtain the 20-digit TOKEN printed on the receipt/ stored
on the smart card (OPTIONAL).
d) Enter the TOKEN to the meter via the home display unit
by key entry or card swipe (OPTIONAL).
e) If the contactless smart card is used to recharge the
account, the display unit downloads the account, meter
usage information, and the event logs to the smart card.
The information can then be collected by the vending
software of the TMR-2012 AMI system to build a
continuous user account profile.

5)

Steps for customers to input the credit TOKEN into meter via the
home display unit:
a) Enter the token input mode, and key in the 20-digits TOKEN
via keypad (Or put the smart card on the home display unit).

1.

One long-lifetime super lithium-ion battery is provided as power-down

protection for real time clock. Lifetime of the super lithium battery:
20 years.

2.

P2000 has an internal super capacitor, which will supply voltage to

meter clock during power off; it can sustain for about 10 days. The
lithium-ion battery will start working only after super capacitor
consumes all of its voltage.

3.

P2000 supports an external replaceable battery (OPTIONAL) for LCD

display & optical port meter reading during power off. The service life
of this battery depends on how frequent the feature is used, e.g. the
frequency of power offs, and during the power off, how often users
push the button to wake up the meter. The expected life cycle of this
battery is 3 - 5 years under normal usage.

4.

It is strongly recommended that the meter reading battery not to be

connected during meter shipping and storage. Only connect the
meter reading battery upon or before meter installations.
Connecting the meter reading battery during storage may reduce the
service life of the meter reading battery.

Appendix E: Installation Instructions

The instructions apply to the direct connected (whole current)
meters. Failure to comply with the installation instructions may
cause equipment damage or reduced meter service life.

Instructions

Illustration

1. Prepare the wires.

Use the proper size copper/aluminum
wires.
Peel off outer shell, and then cut the
front flat with bare wire length at
approximately 45 mm.
Attention: Make sure to keep the
bare wire between 44mm and 46mm.
If the wire is too long, the excessive
length will increase the risk of
unintended short circuit between
wires.
If the wire is too short, there wont be
enough contact length between wire
and terminal.

2. Remove the wire screw cover from

the meter (assuming the terminal
cover has been removed already).

3. For each terminal, unscrew both

screws completely.
Attention:
Make sure to unscrew the screws
completely.
If not unscrewed completely, the
pressure plate may not be able to fall
down to proper position.

4. Check if the pressure plates have

fallen to the bottom.
Attention:
Use screw driver to touch the pressure
plate slightly to help gravity, in the rare
case it has not fallen to the bottom
already.

5. Insert the wire inside the terminal

between the pressure plate and the
terminal.
Attention:
a) If the wire is stranded, make sure
all the strands are inside the
pressure plate.
b) Make sure the entire bare wires are
inside the terminal, and at the same
time no shell was touching the
pressure plate inside the terminal. If
you have done Step 1 correctly, the
length of the bare wire should be just
right.

6. Fasten both screws very tight.

Attention:
Make sure both screwed down and
check regularly.

7. Repeat Step 1 - 6 until all the wires

were connected. Then put back the
screw cover and seal as appropriate.

The new meter casing for direct-connected meters features an innovative terminal
structure. The new terminal has deeper slots for larger contact area with the cable to
reduce the resistance. The distance between phases are also increased to avoid
sparks between phases.

Appendix F: GPRS Antenna Installation

Instructions
P2000 meter with GPRS module has an external antenna for improved GPRS/GSM
signal reception. The antenna looks like this:

The GPRS antenna should be installed in a secure location with good signal reception.
The installation should follow these guidelines:

For meters installed a non-metal (non-electromagnetic shielding) meter

cabinet, the GPS antenna can be installed inside the meter cabinet.

For meters installed inside a metal meter cabinet with antenna chimney, the
antenna should be installed inside the chimney for best security and signal
reception.

For meters installed inside a metal meter cabinet with a window, the antenna
can be installed close to the window inside the meter cabinet (See the red
shaded area in the illustration on the next page).

For meters installed inside a completely metal meter cabinets without any
window, the antenna should be installed on the outside of the cabinet to allow
signal reception. Additional fixation or protection maybe required to prevent
the antenna from being tempered.
