With the launch of the 700 Vario in the fall of 1998, Fendt introduced the stepless Vario drive
in the mid-sized tractor class. Just two years later, the 716 Vario was the most produced
tractor model from Fendt. To meet the demands for more power and larger tyres, Fendt
introduced the 800 Vario range in 2003.
In the model year 2007, Fendt now presents the 700 and 800 Vario tractors with new
motorisation.

Power specifications
It is often asked what the different power
specifications in the technical documents
mean. In principle, there are various methods to
measure and characterise the performance of
an engine. In general, these are distinguished
by which auxiliary units are mounted while
measurements are taken.
A bare engine can supply more power to the
crankshaft than one that must also supply
consumers, such as the alternator, compressed
air system, hydraulic pumps etc. This results in
several different power specifications for the
same engine.

Transmission efficiency
An issue that is discussed again and again is
transmission efficiency. To determine the exact
efficiency of a transmission, it must be removed
from the tractor and measured on a testing
stand. This does not make sense in practice,
since here the influence of the axles, the rest of
the drive train, as well as all auxiliary units, such
as generator, air-conditioning, compressed air
Transmission
Type of hydrostats
Since the Fendt Vario transmission is
a hydrostatic-mechanical drive with
powersplitting, it is often erroneously assumed
that it has poor transmission efficiency due to
the use of hydrostats.

Service-friendly
The higher the efficiency is, the less energy is
lost through conversion into heat and the lower
the load on the radiator and oil is. Through the
excellent efficiency of the Fendt hydrostatics,
the transmission oil only needs to be changed
every 2000 hrs. A special oil is not required.
Shuttle gearbox
Shifting from forward to reverse with the
Vario transmission is as simple as swinging the
displacement pump in the opposite direction,
without any wear on the transmission. Contrary
to other transmission concepts, no power shift
- shuttle clutches is necessary.
Power splitting
A planetary gear set at the transmission input
distributes engine power in varying proportions
to the mechanical and hydrostatic branches.
With increasing speed, the share of the power
transmitted through the hydrostatic branch
decreases. At top speed, the entire engine
power output is transmitted through the
mechanical branch. The engine therefore has
excellent efficiency, even at top speeds, since

Advantages steering:
Load sensing valve: Oil is only supplied to
the steering, when steering movements are
made.
The steering is supplied by the axial piston
displacement pump. If the entire litre
capacity of the displacement pump is
required by the control units, the steering is
supplied by an auxiliary pump
A pump capacity of up to 110 l/min
(optionally 154 l/min) is available to the
control units.

PTO shafts
Technical design
The power from the engine goes directly
through the transmission to the PTO. The power
flow is generated through a wet PTO clutch.
The neutral position allows the stub axle to be
rotated easily by hand, making it easy to attach
the drive shaft.
PTO efficiency
All Fendt Vario tractors offer excellent PTO
efficiency. The reason for this is that the engine
crank shaft and PTO stub axle are connected via
only one gear step in the PTO transmission. The
extension of the engine crankshaft runs through
the Vario transmission into the planetary
gear set and from there through the rear axle
housing to the PTO transmission.
Start-up control
PTO start-up is electronically controlled through
a load-dependent speed control. The PTO clutch
is charged with a certain pressure so that the
implement starts up in a fixed ramp-up time
(approx. 2 secs). The pressure used to close the
clutch, adapts itself to the torque requirements
of the implement. Lightweight implement, low
pressure, heavy implement, high pressure. All
that is needed to engage the PTO is a brief push
on the button. If the button is pushed longer
than 5 secs., max. pressure on the PTO clutch
builds up immediately in the PTO clutch - high
break-out torque - emergency operation mode.
If the specified start-up procedure did not suit
the implement optimally, the driver can adapt
PTO start-up by calibrating the start-up control.

Flange PTO
To meet the requirements of different

Supply unit
The 700/800 Vario is equipped with a load
sensing hydraulic system. The heart of the
hydraulic system, an axial piston displacement
pump, supplies all consumers, such as steering,
rear and front power lift, and the electric
auxiliary control units. The displacement pump
operates precisely according to the pressure and
oil quantity requirements of these consumers.

Hydraulics
Power lift
The lifting power for the rear power lift is
provided by 2 large-sized lifting cylinders. The
linkage category (width) is cat. 2 and can be
changed to cat. 3. All Vario tractors are equipped
with quick couplers for ball size 3 in the lower
links as standard.
This simplifies exchanging implements among
all Fendt tractors without having to change the
balls every time.
Linkage kinematics
An important criterion for the rear hydraulics, in
addition to maximum lift capacity, is continuous
lift capacity. The higher an implement is lifted,
the more lift power it requires. It is therefore
important that the lift capacity in the upper
lifting range increases, as is the case in Fendt
tractors. The Fendt lifting gear offers great
lifting power reserves in the lower range, so that
mounted implements can be lifted from the
ground in all cases.

The Fendt front loader concept
To guarantee universal applicability under all
conditions as far as possible, the Fendt 700/800
Vario range was designed as a multi-purpose
tractor. From the very start, the front loader,
front hydraulics and front PTO were designed
along with the tractor.
Each of these units can be retrofitted
The high permissible front axle load, the result
of strong axles and large tyres, offers enough
reserves for all implements and the toughest
operations

Cab suspension
The cab suspension is integrated in the
substructure of the cab. The cab is mounted
on hydraulic supports in the front. The cab is
therefore connected to the tractor body free
of vibrations and stabilised in the fore-aft
direction. The oil filling in the hydraulic supports
reduces the noise that is transferred from the
tractor body to the cab.
The rear cab bearing is either a pneumatic or
mechanical suspension element. This eliminates
vibrations and shock loads that are transferred
from the tractor body to the cab. The cab
suspension is available in two versions.

The passenger seat is located on the left-hand
side of the cab at the entrance. To facilitate
climbing in and out of the cab, it can be folded
down. A safety belt prevents the passenger from
being thrown forwards during strong braking
manoeuvres.
Dashboard
The driver can read all important fill levels and
speeds on the dashboard. In the centre of the
dashboard panel is a multiple display. The time
and operating hours are displayed as default.
The basic display is interrupted by:
Warnings: hand brake is applied, engine
temperature too high, etc.
Fault messages: faults in the 4WD, differential
locks, etc.

Driving Vario
Driving Vario
In order to meet the needs of different drivers
and operating situations equally, there are
several ways to drive the 700/800 Vario:
The transmission and engine are controlled by
the driver: The driver has direct access to the
response of the engine and transmission. The
transmission ratio can be set with the joystick
or the driving pedal, the engine speed with
the hand or foot throttle or the speed memory
keys on the joystick console.
The transmission is controlled by the driver
together with automatic, electronic engine
control (TMS): The driver sets the speed with
the joystick or driving pedal, the engine
management provides the required engine
speed automatically.

Changing direction
The 700/800 Vario offers two options for
reversing travel direction:
Finely controlled reversing
Pull joystick back (when driving forwards) until
the tractor comes to a standstill, press the
activation key and pull the joystick back again.
Automated direction-changing
Press rocker switch on steering column
adjustment lever. If the driver pushes
the rocker switch on the steering wheel
adjustment lever while driving, a programmed
change of travel direction is initiated. The
vehicle decelerates to a standstill and
accelerates in the opposite direction of travel.
Or move joystick to the left with the activation
key pressed
Forward travel:
Switch pressed forward: The tractor
decelerates, stands still and after releasing
the switch, travels forward again.
Reverse travel:
Switch pulled back, the tractor drives in
reverse after letting go of the switch
Quick reversing - stop & go

Driving Vario
Pedal mode
If driving pedal mode is activated with key
located in front of the joystick, the travel speed
can be set with the accelerator pedal, which
now functions as a driving pedal. The engine
management system TMS is activated at the
same time.
The speed range that the pedal covers is set
with the sliding control on the joystick console,
the corresponding indicator appears in the
Varioterminal.
Settings
All settings are made in the Varioterminal.
The most important terminal settings are
displayed on the main menu page.
A major design objective was to give the
driver an overview of all the most important
transmission settings at a glance.

Viscosity of engine oils
For registered tradenames, so far as they are specified, see current list of fuels and fluids, which is available from
every authorised Fendt workshop as a Service Information memo.
If the fuel contains more than 0.5 % sulphur, the oil change frequency must be halved. Only use diesel fuels
approved according to DIN EN 590, see Service Information 40/04.
Only use antifreeze approved according to Service Information 11/02.
After filling, the engine must run at least 5 minutes, so that the axle drives are filled.

Bio-diesel
Fuel quality
RME R apeseedM ethylE ster,
FAME F atty A cid M ethyl E ster fuel
Use acc. to DIN EN 141214. The use of cold-pressed
rapeseed oil is not possible.
Servicing intervals
Oil and oil lter change intervals are to be halved. Every time after
lling the tank If bio-diesel is lled after conventional diesel is used, the fuel lter should be replaced, since bio-diesel acts like a
solvent, it may cause diesel fuel residues to clog the lter.
Notes on use
Bio-diesel is suitable for winter operations down to approx. - 10
C. At temperatures below - 10 C, diesel fuel needs to be added
to prevent the bio-diesel from precipitating. The mixing ratio must
be approx. 50 : 50. Diesel fuel must be used at temperatures below
- 16 C. Bio-diesel can be mixed in any ratio with diesel fuel. Driving
performance may be slightly lower. Fuel consumption may be slightly
higher. Always ll diesel fuel if the tractor will not be used for sometime (more than 3 months), since the injector
elements may otherwise stick.
Special characteristic of bio-diesel
Bio-diesel is manufactured from vegetable oil (mainly
rapeseed oil) in a chemical process that converts vegetable
oil into bio-diesel using methanol as a catalyst. Bio-diesel is
practically free of sulphur, thus almost no sulphur dioxide is
produced during combustion. The exhaust contains less
- carbon monoxide
- hydrocarbons
- particulate matter (e.g. soot)
than when using conventional diesel fuels. Bio-diesel is
biodegradable, ground and ground water are not aected as much
in case of accidental spills.
Bio-hydraulic oil
Bio-hydraulic oil quality
Use bio-hydraulic oil made from rapeseed oil and synthetic
oils according to viscosity standard ISO VG 32 - ISO VG 46.
Note:
The use of polyglycol-based synthetic oils is not possible.
Servicing intervals
The oil and oil lter change intervals are every 1000 op.
hours or annually, whichever comes rst. When converting
to bio-hydraulic oil after approx. 10 - 15 op. hrs. change
hydraulic oil lter, since bio-hydraulic oil acts as a solvent,
it may cause existing oil residues to clog the lter.
Notes on use
Bio-hydraulic oil is suitable for winter operations down to approx.
- 15 C. At outdoor temperatures below approx. -15 C and longer
standing times, vegetable-based hydraulic oils can thicken. After a
cold-start, allow a short warm-up time at medium engine speed, to
ensure smooth functioning of the hydraulic steering and the power
lift. At extremely low temperatures, the entire tractor may need
to be warmed. Avoid mixing bio-hydraulic oil with other mineral
oils, e.g. with other oil remaining in the system, or by operating an
external implement, since this may aect its positive environmental
properties and it may be dicult to dispose of it (hazardous waste).
When disposing of oil, observe applicable legislation
and the instructions of the oil manufacturer. A mixture
of more than 2% leads to changes in viscosity and
may lead to trouble with the hydraulic valves.
Special characteristics of bio-hydraulic oil
Bio-hydraulic oil is biodegradable, ground and ground
water are not aected in case of accidental spills.
Important:
Despite the high environmental-compatibility of bio-hydraulic oil,
oil spills must always be reported.
