Primal Leadership by Goleman
Emotions are contagious and often seems too personal or meant to be leave at
home when coming to the work place, but how leaders emotions have a profound
impact on others play a significant role in the workplace today. Leaders is usually be
initiative at getting to work early and staying the latest at the office after everyone else
left but that doesnt guarantee a success from a team full of disengage worker. The
dynamic workplace has been susceptible to change so the leader needs to be flexible to
adjust properly to such changes. Being under such large pressure to deliver success,
the leader first must be able to have a firm reality of his objectives and a clear
understanding of his vision because people like to have an air of certainty towards the
goal, otherwise they wouldnt know where they heading at. As we discussed in class,
leaders are now abandoning command and conquer to move on to a more visionary
style of leadership, where the goal is and responsibilities are equally share common
among the people in the team. This type of leadership create an environment where the
leader isnt perceive as a typical bossy figure, but more like a source of inspiration who
share a common ground and have an vision to drive people forward with his optimism.
When leaderships come from within, it radiates warmth and genuine feelings that
help bring people together. I firmly believe that the main component of primal leadership

is a sense of authenticity along with emotion intelligence. Being sincere helps carry out
and deliver the message as close as possible to the core meaning to the listeners. Selfawareness is a powerful tool, in which a leader have to be aware of his actions along
his energy output, in order to keep a positive mindset for themselves so that they can
influence others to be in good moods (Goleman 10). Leader who are in charge of his
own emotions can dictate his behavior in a desirable way that can increase productivity
and synergy across the team as well as organization. If the leader is motivated himself
and is willing to empathize with others, he is able to get work done with the maximum
efficiency while build rapport with his subordinates. The leader position in modern
society is no longer just simply giving orders or commands and expecting success
reported back in a timely manner, it has been evolving beyond the scope of the
workplace and take place after work hour is finished. For example, the ability to cultivate
and maintain relationships speaks for the management quality of the leader himself.
Primal leadership, as described in the book, encompasses all these attributes but not
limited to self-awareness, self-management of emotion, empathy and relationship
management (Goleman, 39) set great leaders apart from the rest. Only those who
master at these traits can impact the reservoir of positivity that unleashes the best in
people.
