Discussion Question

Compare the theoretical and actual mass recovered and your accuracy of your
procedure in the lab. What calculated value tells you the accuracy of your data? (6)
0.8325 is a reasonable % error. % error below 3 % shows good techniques of
experiment. The accuracy of my data is high.

Discuss THREE POSSIBLE errors that lowered the accuracy of your technique in this
lab based on your procedure and equipment used. Identify each of your possible
errors as systematic or random. (9)
Error 1: The analytical balance has built-in uncertainties which prevent me from
obtaining the accurate mass NaCl. This is a systematic error.
Error 2: The pipet has built-in uncertainties that prevent me from obtaining the
exact volume of 25ml of NaCl. This is a systematic error.
Error 3: Its difficult to transfer all the aliquot from pipet to evaporating dish. There
is usually some solution left in the pepet. This is a systematic error.

Post Lab question

1. a. The actual molarity will be higher than calculated molarity. Molarity=
amount of solute (mol)/ volume of solution (ml). Increasing volume of solution
while keeping the same amount of solute results in the calculated molarity
being lowered than the actual molarity.
b. Density=mass of solution / volume of solution. As both the mass and
volume of the solution increase, the density remain roughly the same.
2. a. The mass of NaCl collected is lower than the theoretical value. The pipet
(25 ml of aliquot) is expected to produce of the mass of NaCl solid that
dissolves in 100ml solution. As less than 25ml of aliquot is delivered to
evaporating dish, the NaCl solid recovered must be less than the theoretical
value.
b. Less solute is dissolved in the 25 ml of aliquot, mass of NaCl recovered is
less than the theoretical mass of NaCl recovered.
c. As more than 25ml of aliquot is delivered into the evaporating dish, mass of
NaCl recovered is more than the theoretical mass of NaCl recovered.
d. mass of NaCl recovered=mass of (evaporating dish and NaCl recovered)mass of evaporating dish. As the mass of the evaporating dish was recorded
as less than the true mass, mass of NaCl recovered is more than its true
mass.
