Fitting Of Curves & Parabola

Solved Problems

Example 1 : Fit a parabola, by the method of least squares to

the following
data :
x : 1

y : 5

12 26 60 97

Soln.:

Let Y = ax2 + bx + c be the best fit.

Then, the normal equations are,

ax2 + bx + 5c = y

(1)

ax3 + bx2 + cx = xy

(2)

ax4 + bx3 + cx2= x2y

(3)

Fitting Of Curves

Fitting Of Curves & Parabola

Solved Problems

225a + 55b + 15c = 832 (5)

979a + 225b + 55c = 3672 (6)
On solving we get,
a = 5.7143, b = 11.0858 and c = 10.4001
Hence the parabola is ;
y = 5.7143x2 11.0858x + 10.4001.

Example 2 : From the table given below, find the values of 'a'
and 'b' in the law Y = aebx by the method of least squares :
x : 0

y : 3

Soln.:

12 20

1 0.55 0.18

y = aebx
log10y = log10a + bx.log10e

i.e. y = A + Bx

(1)

where Y = log10y, A = log10a, B = log10e

The normal equations are,
Bx + 5A = y

(2)

Bx2 + Ax = xy

Hence, the required curve is;

y = 3.0304e 0.1411x.

Example 3 : Fit a curve y = axb to the data :

x : 1

y :1200900 600 200 110 50

Soln.:

y = axb

Since

taking logarithm on both sides,

log10y = log10 (axb) = log10a+ b log10x
i.e. Y = A + bX

(1)

Where Y = log10y , X = log10 x and A = log10 a

The normal equations are,

a = 10A = 2035

Hence, the equation is
