READING COMPREHENSION
INFLUENZA
Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can cause the
disease in animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from animals. In fact, a
great number of wild birds seem to carry the viruses without showing any evidences
of illnesses. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may
have evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on the earth 100 million years
and is able to carry the viruses without contracting the disease. There is even
convincing evidence to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and
from continent to continent by migrating birds.
It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in
an animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is a great variety of
strains containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human
influenza virus can recombine with an influenza virus from a lower animal to produce
an entirely new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way that major
new strains come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza strains
may recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is transmitted to
man.
1. According to the passage, scientists have discovered that influenza viruses
_______.
A. cause ill health in animals.
B. do not always cause symptom in birds.
C. are rarely present in wild birds.
D. change when transmitted from animals to man.

B. All the different strains can be found in the wild birds.
C. It existed over 100 million years ago.
D. It can survive in many different places.

4. New strains of viruses are transmitted to man by _____.
A. a type of wild pig.
B. diseased lower animals.
C. a group of migrating birds.
D. a variety of means.

EXCEPT_____.
A. two influenza viruses in the same animal recombining.

6. The passage is the most suitable for which of the following subjects?
A. The History of Medicine.
B. Medical Science.
C. Botanical Science.
D. Life Study.

In the past explorers went around the world and discovered new lands. They
were brave people and they changed the history of the world. Nowadays there
are only a few places that we havent fully explored yet. We are still trying to
find more about the north and south poles, There is very little we do not know
about the rest of the planet Earth.
On the other hand, we have only just begun to explore the moon and the
other planets. Space is still a mystery. Space exploration is just an adventure or
a game. It is important because it can help us solve some very mysterious
problems. For example, there have been changes in the earths climate in the
last few years. As a result, both people who live in cities and farmers who grow
crops are worried that there is not enough rainfall.
The solution may be in space. In a few years time, scientists will have bases
on the moon, which will help us control the weather.
We face another serious problem. There are now far too many people on our
small planet. If we do not find a way to control the population, we will need
new planets so people can live there.
We may also run out of fuel, like coal and oil. We do not get enough energy
from the wind, waves of sun. Nuclear energy is useful, but very dangerous. We
must continue to explore space and find solution to the earths problem before it
is too late.

THE PLACE FOR HOLIDAY WITH FAMILY

If you want to take the whole family on holiday and keep everybody happy,
then I have found just the place for you. I recently went with a group of friends
to stay at the Greenwood Holiday village, which is open from May until
October.
Built in the center of a forest, Greenwood is a great place to stay whatever
the weather is. Its main attraction for families is the indoor world of water,
where young and old can have fun in the different pools. Some of these,
however, are for serious swimmers only.
For sporty people, the Country Club offers tennis, squash, and badminton. If
the children are too young to join these sports, there are activity clubs.
Greenwood is a good place for families as it is traffic free - you explore every
part of this village on foot or by bike. Some people complained that this was
inconvenient, but I was pleased to be out in the fresh air. For evening
entertainment, there are shows and cinemas.
Accommodation is in variety of apartments of different sizes. These have up
to four bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, as well as a dining area. Before
going, I thought the apartments might not be big enough for all of us, but I was
pleasantly surprised - it was not too crowded at all.
I definitely go back to Greenwood next year. Why dont you give it a try?
Visit their website for further information now!

There was one thing that I found rather strange on my first day as housekeeper at
Monks House. The floors in the house were very thin. The bathroom was directly
above the kitchen, and when Mrs Woolf was having her bath before breakfast, I could
hear her talking to herself. On and on she went, talk, talk, talk, asking questions and
giving herself the answers. I thought there must be two or three people up there with
her. When Mr Woolf saw that I looked surprised, he told me that Mrs Woolf always
said the sentences out loud that she had written during the night. She needed to know
if they sounded right and the bath was a good place for trying them out.
I was not allowed to make coffee at Monks House Mr and Mrs Woolf were very
particular about coffee and always made it themselves so Mr Woolf came into the
kitchen at eight oclock every morning to make it. When we carried the breakfast trays
to Mrs Woolfs room I noticed that she had always been working during the night.
There were pencils and paper beside her bed so that when she woke up she could
work, and sometimes it seemed as though she had had very little sleep.
Mrs Woolfs bedroom was outside the house in the garden; I used to think how
inconvenient it must be to have to go out in the rain to go to bed. Her bedroom had
been added on to the back of the house; the door faced the garden and a window at the
side opened out on to a field. Because the writing-room was small, he had had a larger
on built for her at the end of the garden against the church wall.
I can always remember her coming to the house each day from the writing-room;
when I rang the bell for lunch at once oclock she used to walk down through the
garden smoking one of her favorite cigarettes in a long holder. She was tall and thin
and very graceful. She had large, deep-set eyes and a wide curving mouth I think
perhaps it was this that made her face seem particularly beautiful. She wore long skirts
usually blue or brown in the fashion of the day, and silk jackets of the same color.
Her cigarettes were made from a special tobacco called My Mixture. Mr Woolf
bought it for her in London, and, in the evenings, they used to sit by the fire and make
these cigarettes themselves.
Mrs Woolf wore clothes that suited her well. I pressed them for her and did any
sewing that was necessary she was not able to sew, although sometimes she liked to
try. There was one thing in the kitchen that Mrs Woolf was very good at doing; she
could make beautiful bread.
