1.0 Introduction
These instructions are intended for the inspection and maintenance of Trimoterm, Trimoval and flashing elements
made of pre-varnished metal sheet and protected by organic protective coats whereby long-term resistance and
aesthetic appearance of the anti-corrosion protection have been assured.
The surfaces should be inspected and cleaned in intervals that depend on the level of pollution and air aggression
in scope of regular maintenance.
The table at the end of the document presents a list of required performances and measures to be taken during
the annual inspection of a building, instructions for the damage repair, washing of roof and faade panels and
other aspects of maintenance.
In case of any additional questions relating to the inspection and maintenance of hot galvanised prevarnished
sheet steel, cladding, roof and Trimoterm faade panels, you are kindly requested to consult theservice and repair
department in Trimo.

2.0 Protection of Trimo elements

A panel consists of mineral wool and an external metal sheet facing.
Sheet steel has been preliminary hot galvanised; thickness of a zinc coat is 275 g/m2 (DIN EN 1046).
Sheet steel is additionally protected by an organic coat in accordance with the coil-coating procedure (DIN EN
10169/1).
Two kinds of metal sheet and protection types are used. The protection is based on:
- SP polyester,
- PVDF polyvinylidene fluoride.
On a special request, protection by paint on any other basis (PVC, PUR, etc.) and with different properties may be
applied.

Therefore, certain instructions for panel handling that prevent causing of damage are valid and are to be followed.
Only scissors and saws that do not heat a cutting spot to a high temperature are allowed for panel cutting. High
temperature may cause destruction of the anti-corrosive protection in the immediate vicinity of the cutting spot.
Therefore, the use of various grinding machines is prohibited for this purpose!
Welding in the immediate vicinity of panels is prohibited.

No.43/V-2/9-2011

Small metal particles that appear as a consequence of cutting and drilling corrode very quickly and cause
mechanical and visible damage to an organic coat. Thus, these particles are to be immediately removed from
panel surfaces or latest when the daily work has been completed. Such metal particles are to be cleaned with
soft brushes or by suction.
Hot splinters that fall on a metal sheet surface are very dangerous. They sink deeply in the protective coat and
locally cause permanent damage. Protection of a metal sheet surface against the appearance and influence of
hot splinters is recommended.
Marking or scribing by wire nails or similar sharp objects that may damage a protective coat is prohibited.
When drilling or riveting the flashing suitable protection (e.g. cardboard) is to be inserted between a drilling
machine and a faade panel in order to prevent damaging of a panel.

3.0 Regular annual inspection

In accordance with good practice an annual inspection of panels and the complete building is to be carried out at
least once a year. The purpose of inspection is elimination of any possible shortcomings and thus prolongation of
the economic life of Trimo elements.
Appendices 1-5 at the end of the document contain a table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection with
all the relevant measures:
APPENDIX 1: Table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection of the Trimoterm SNV NM system,
APPENDIX 2: Table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection of the Trimoterm FTV system,
APPENDIX 3: Table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection of the Trimoval system,
APPENDIX 4: Table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection of the CLEAN ROOM system,
APPENDIX 5: Table of activities relating to a regular annual inspection of the STEEL STRUCTURE system.

4.0 Cleaning
When being used Trimo elements are exposed to various surface impurities, polluted air and increasing UV
radiation.
Impurities in the air, emissions of sulphur, chlorine and nitrogen compounds that react with water and decrease
the economic life of the anti-corrosive protection have a strong negative influence on organic coats.
In order to achieve the longest possible economic life of hot galvanised painted metal sheet it is necessary to
regularly remove impurities and dirt from surfaces that usual rain does not clean.

4.1 Washing
Washing of all areas of a building is recommended minimally once a year.
Washing is performed under pressure (Kercher, Wap) under the consideration of the following parameters:
- Temperature of washing water: max 60 C,
- Pressure of water jet: up to 10 bars,
- Solution of a detergent, concentration: up to 10 %

- pH solutions: min. 6 to max. 9 - for (SP) polyester organic coat,

- pH solutions: min. 4 to max. 9 - for (PVC) plastisol organic coat,

- pH solutions: min. 4 to max. 9 - for (PVDF) polyvinylidene fluoride organic coat.
The complete surface of Trimoterm panels (faade, roof) is to be washed with water and a suitable detergent. After
cleaning with a detergent the complete surface is rinsed with immaculately clean water. Rinsing is to be carried
out from top to the bottom in order to completely remove the detergent.
The use of too strong or unsuitable detergents may damage a paint coat.
When surfaces have been rinsed with clean water, wet surfaces are to be wiped with dry cloths.
2

No.43/V-2/9-2011

4.2 Special recommendations

In case of mould appearance the surface is to be cleaned with a suitable solution (5 % solution of Na-hypo chlorite)
and then rinsed with cold water.
The use of 50 % solution of cleaning alcohol (Leskin HZA) or mineral detergents based on hydrocarbons (white
spirit, Tessarol) is allowed for stain removal. Preliminary conduct of a test on a small surface is recommended.
When a stain has been removed, the surface is to be immediately and thoroughly rinsed.

4.3 Warnings
Panel surfaces are not to be cleaned in strong sunny weather or on strongly heated metal sheet.
When cleaning varnished surfaces the use of strong organic solvents and rough detergents or brushes is prohibited.
Do not exaggerate with cleaning or brushing surfaces since high quality of the final varnish (e.g. of metal shades)
can be damaged (RAL 9006, RAL 9007).
Stains of bitumen are to be immediately cleaned with Tessarol or varnishing benzene. Stains of concrete are to be
cleaned with a moist cloth immediately when they appear!

5.0 Repair procedures of mechanical damage

The scope of mechanical damage is to be assessed and the most suitable approach selected on its basis. A repair is
to be limited to the smallest possible area of the mechanical damage.
In case of slight damage a repair may be sufficient. The repair procedure is described in this chapter or attached to
the instructions for the use of repair paint.
In case of extensive damage and when a panel cannot be renewed in accordance with the described procedure
replacement of a panel is recommended.
If replacement of a panel cannot be carried out the panel is to be renovated by painting the complete surface and
not only one panel or only locally round the damage.
Painting of an accomplished unit is recommended due to aesthetic reasons since classical coats change differently
after long-term exposure than the pre-varnished metal sheet. A brush or roller may be used for such repairs.
Spraying is possible only exceptionally when external conditions allow.
Damage may be corroded or non-corroded.
Impurities collect on a damaged place and thus cause further damage.
If mechanical damage is not repaired after the appearance it results in poor aesthetic appearance and shortens the
economic life of metal sheet.

No.43/V-2/9-2011

It is recommended that mechanical damage be immediately repaired, when the damage is still new and clean, and
repairs can then be quick and simple. After a long period of time repairs of mechanical damage are much more
complicated and results may not be excellent, since visible differences in the shade of pre-varnished metal sheet
may have already appeared.
Rust is to be removed from corroded surfaces; priming and top-masking coats are to be applied.
A thin school brush is used for the application of a coat on a clean and dry place.
Single-pot paints in the shade of metal sheet are recommended to be used for repairs of mechanical damage.
If mechanical damage has been made only to a top-masking coat, then one coat of paint is sufficient. In case of
damage to the zinc layer or basic material, it is recommended that another paint coat be applied, when the first
coat has already dried.
Use of spray paint is prohibited for repairs.
Straightening out extensive dents by polyester putty is not recommended.

5.1

Mechanical damage of non-corroded surfaces

The following is recommended for the repair of mechanical damage:
- The damaged place on metal sheet is to be locally cleaned with cleaning alcohol,
- The coat is to be mixed well before application,
- The coat in the shade of the surface is to be applied to a clean and dry place.
A thin school brush is used. Recommended ambient temperature during work ranges from +5 to +35C.
If the damage to Trimo elements is new and slight, it is necessary to clean the surface well by 50 % solution of
cleaning alcohol (Leskin HZA) or cleaning isopropyl alcohol.
If mechanical damage is made to a top-masking coat only, one coat of paint is sufficient. In case of damage to
the zinc coat or even to the basic material, it is recommended that another paint coat be applied when the first
coat has dried.
Use of spray paint is prohibited.

5.2 Mechanical damage of corroded surfaces

Surfaces of elements are to be differently prepared before processing due to various kinds of elements and
damage.

5.2.1 Surface preparation

If damage has already corroded, a surface is to be ground by abrasives (e.g. SCOTCH BREIT 600).

5.2.2 Priming (base) coat

The two-pot paint SHOP PRIMER E-ZN containing powder zinc is applied to a well-cleaned and dry surface by
a brush. The priming coat based on zinc is to replace the zinc removed from the pre-varnished galvanised thin
metal sheet.
The priming (base) coat is a two-pot paint. It is to be mixed in the prescribed ratio and the time of use is limited.
The prepared priming coat is evenly applied by a thin brush (width up to 10 mm) over a damaged surface and
on places where zinc has been removed. One should wait till the coat dries to adhesion or after 30 minutes the
application of the top-masking coat can start.

5.2.3 Top-masking coat

Top-masking coat, 2k polyurethane is applied to a dry surface of a priming coat.
A coat is to be adjusted to the colour or shade of pre-varnished metal sheet. Standard paints Rezistol emajl VA are
used for standard colours or shades of pre-varnished metal sheet (RAL 1015, RAL 3009, RAL 5010, Trimo brown, RAL
7016, RAL 7035, RAL 9002 and RAL 9006); the paint Rezistol emajl VA prepared according to the coupon is used for
repairs of all other shades of pre-varnished metal sheet (various suppliers).
A thin brush is used for application.
The top-masking coat is applied to places where the priming coat has been previously applied.
The paint is to be applied up to complete masking. The top-masking coat can be applied in two coats in case of
shades of poor masking properties (RAL 1007, RAL 1021, RAL 2008). In such cases the minimal inter-coat interval
is to be urgently considered.

5.3 Removal of corroded splinters

If steel corroded splinters have nevertheless remained on panels of a building, they are removed in the following
way.
A fine polishing paste and an electric polishing machine, cloths for machine polishing can be used for quality
removal of splinters from the surface.
A fine polishing paste with no silicones or wax for machine polishing is suitable.
A polishing paste does not remove corroded splinters that have deeply sunk in an organic coat (in case of hot
splinters), and therefore traces of brown spots are still possible after cleaning with a polishing paste.

Special attention is to be paid to revolutions of machine polishing (max. 1800 to 2000) and to even pressure of
polishing cloths on a surface. It is important that accomplished surfaces of faades panels and not only local
places on panels are polished. After processing by a polishing paste the surfaces are to be thoroughly washed in
accordance with the instructions for panel washing. Then, surfaces are to be wiped with a dry cotton cloth.
By the use of the proposed fine polishing paste and professional performance of cleaning the appearance of prevarnished metal sheet will be restored.
The use of rough polishing pastes is prohibited since brilliance may change and the existing organic coat may be
removed.
A consequence of a thin organic coat may be also a functional and aesthetic problem of appearance of faade
surfaces.
Thorough washing of complete pre-varnished surfaces is to be urgently performed after polishing.
WARNING: Removal of splinters by a polishing paste is not to be performed in strong sunny weather or on heated
metal sheet.

6.0 Painting of Trimoterm panels

Panels can be painted in varnishing chambers or during the assembly. Painting is intended for demanding visual
appearance. An additional aesthetic effect can be achieved by the use of foils (inscriptions, logotypes, colour
stripes, pictures, photographs, etc.).

6.1 Limitations
Painting of pre-varnished metal sheet by an organic coat based on PET, PVDF or PVC-plastisol is prohibited.
Painting of pre-varnished metal sheet by an organic coat based on SP is not recommended.
Painting of panels by classical physically drying coats is prohibited if an extension of a building is considered or
completion of a working order, where shortage of pre-varnished metal sheet has been observed. Painted surfaces
are to be aesthetically accomplished units.
Coats for wet painting dry in the air at a normal temperature (T<35C). Therefore, these coats change differently
than those on the pre-varnished metal sheet that have dried in a furnace at an increased temperature.
A consequence results in a change of a shade that gradually increases.
Demanding and large-scope interventions on pre-varnished metal sheet or specific procedures of renovation are
to be confirmed by an investor.

6.2 Possibilities
In case of mechanical damage to a panel during the assembly, it is initially necessary to study a possibility of
manufacturing a new panel made of pre-varnished metal sheet in the required shade (the same supplier, the
same batch - coil). Only in case when this is not possible, the manufacture of a panel from PRIMER-metal sheet
and its painting in accordance with the classical professional procedure follow.

6.3 Painting of panels during the assembly

Painting of panels during the assembly depends on the location and possibility of performance.
Spraying during the assembly can be used only exceptionally, if possible due to external conditions.
In such case the environment and other exposed panel surfaces are to be protected against spraying paint.
The protection may be a UV resistant self-adhesive tape that does not leave any adhesive on a surface (e.g. AT66,
ADVANCE).
A person engaged in painting of panels should be suitably qualified for this activity, he should assure an appropriate level of quality and delivery of the ordered quantity in required time.
He is obliged to perform quality control and inform the client about painting results.
If an investor and contractor decide on painting of panels on a building, renewed painting of a certain accomplished unit and not only of an individual panel is recommended.
Painting of roof panels used on faades is not recommended, but possible, if the investor or end-user of the building agrees and if the appearance is not of essential importance.
A two-pot UV-resistant polyurethane or vinyl acrylic coat is recommended for painting of metal (RAL 9006,
RAL 9007) and pearl shades (RAL 3033) that are usually prepared in accordance with a sample of pre-varnished
metal sheet.
