to charity fundraisers,
residents can keep busy

It was 20 years ago when the
Voorhees Animal Orphanage
held its first-ever Woofstock Festival.
The event was contained entirely on the front lawn of the
VAOs facility on Cooper Road
and featured just a few vendors
and local animal rescues.
Now, two decades later, the
VAOs largest annual fundraiser
is back once again for its 20th
year, and volunteers and board
members with the orphanage are
hoping this year might be the
biggest and best yet.
On Sept. 24, Woofstock returns
to Connolly Park from 11 a.m. to
4 p.m. Like years past, the event
will feature a wide array of activities for pets and pet lovers, such
as vendors, food trucks, K-9
demonstrations, basket raffles,
games and more.
According to VAO volunteer
and Woofstock organizer Jenn
Bailey, who also serves as secretary of the VAO board of directors, a week out from the festival
the VAO had already registered
more than 75 crafters and vendors and more than two dozen
rescues.

end next week, the days in
Voorhees will be getting shorter,
leaves will soon start to change,
and the crisp fall air will soon be
upon the township.
Long-time Voorhees residents
know that while the summer
brings plenty to keep locals busy,
fall in town can be just as entertaining.
On Sept. 24, just a few days into
fall, Voorhees furry friends and
their families will have a treat
when the Voorhees Animal Orphanage hosts its annual Woofstock Festival fundraiser. From 11
a.m. to 4 p.m., the dogs and dog
owners of Voorhees can head to
Connolly Park, and for a $2 suggested donation they can check
out nearly 100 crafters, vendors
and animal rescues all in support
of the VAO.
As the township moves into October, residents will also be treat-

in our opinion

We will never forget

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Fifteen years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Richard Donnelly

ifteen years have passed since

the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washington, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost. Its hard to believe how
much our lives have changed in those
15 years how heightened security at
public places, especially airports, is
expected and openly accepted; how a
persons privacy is not always private;
how farewell and welcome home celebrations for servicemen and women
seem to be commonplace; and how,
sadly, the world is still dealing with
terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 15 years
ago. Here we are, a decade-and-a-half

later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of

us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Fifteen years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local communities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memorials.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have

done well so far.

We should never forget what happened 15 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 15 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
Teaching about 9/11 isnt a requirement in New Jersey public schools, although teaching about terrorism is,
so, by default, our children are learning about the worst attack on U.S. soil
in history. And thats important, because a majority of these students
werent alive when the attacks happened, and the ones who were probably dont remember. So teaching them
about the events of the not-so-distant
past is important, so that no one will
ever forget.

Event has fun for whole family

EVENT
Continued from page 1

the Sarah James Music Foundation.

Bailey said Camden County
has also once again signed on as a
presenting sponsor of the event
and provided the festival with a
county-owned stage setup, and
County Line Veterinary Hospital
will also be at the event to provide
$25 pet micro-chipping.
Fun for the whole family will
also be available with face painting and kids craft tables.
This is our biggest fundraiser
aside from our municipal contracts, the rest of our funds come

from donations and fundraisers,

and this is our biggest one, Bailey said. We depend on this basically to survive.
Bailey noted this years event
comes at a time when the VAO
has embarked on its capital campaign to raise $1.6 million to replace the VAOs current facility
with a new building.
Although the VAO was founded
in 1988, the organization has no
central building, and instead operates out of multiple outdated
sheds and structures throughout
its grounds on Cooper Road.
While the VAO serves as the
community shelter for Voorhees
and 14 other Camden County municipalities, the county does not
provide the VAO with regular
funds or a building as it does with

the Camden County Animal Shelter.

Were your local community
shelter, we really are, and this really does benefit us. I cant stress
enough, its Camden County and
us, and we split the county, so
anybody in Voorhees whose dog
gets lost, its coming here. We are
open intake for the 15 municipalities we serve, Bailey said.
Admission to the event is a suggested $2 donation.
All money raised will go toward the VAO and its mission to
help animals. The VAO also requests those who bring a dog to
the event to not use a retractable
leash.

Woofstock or the VAO, visit

through 6 p.m. Hosted by the
Voorhees Cultural and Diversity
Committee and the Voorhees Cultural and Diversity Foundation,
and sponsored by the Camden
County Board of Freeholders, International Day helps bring together the different cultures inside and outside of Voorhees
through a festival of music, food,
dancing, costumes and more.
As October continues, the
Voorhees Town Center will be
giving residents a fright with
some Halloween-themed events.
Returning on Oct. 21 is Thriller

Night!, which kicks off at 7 p.m.

with an outdoor screening of Tim
Burtons stop-motion classic The
Nightmare Before Christmas.
Following the film is a screening of pop star Michael Jacksons
Thriller music video, where
members of the audience are encouraged to wear zombie costumes and dance along to the
Thriller music.
The crowd is asked to join in
the fun and do their best zombie
in-sync with Thriller playing on
the 20-foot screen, with spirit
hours in the bars, store specials
in the mall, strolling Halloween
characters and more, said Lisa
Milideo of the Voorhees Town
Center.

This gala features hors doeuvres, a two-hour open bar reception and more than 150 unique

an ATV accident.
Those interested in the event

Voorhees Town Center for the annual tree lighting at 6:30 p.m.
The event also features Santa
photos, dance performances,
strolling holiday-themed characters, holiday music and a classic
holiday-themed movie in the VTC

While keeping all these fall
events in mind, residents also
shouldnt forget summer still has
a few days left, and the Voorhees
Township Summertime in the
Park series will conclude in just a

few days with a Movie Night in

the Park on Sept. 17 at Connolly

This year, kids and families
will be treated to Disney Pixars

Come to the
Camden County Fair
By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash
Before you know it,
the air will turn
crisp, the landscape
will begin to fill with
brilliant fall colors
and pumpkins will
be displayed all over
the neighborhood.
That can only mean
one thing - it's time
once again for the Camden County Fair.
This year's Camden County Fair, presented by the Camden County Freeholder Board, is being held on Sept. 17
and 18 at Camden County College's
Blackwood Campus in Gloucester Township. The college is excited to welcome
the fair back to their campus for two
days filled with fun and entertainment
for your entire family.
When you come to the fair with your
family and friends, you'll find amusement rides, carnival games, great food
and much more. If you like pony rides, 4H youth project displays and animal exhibits, the Camden County Fair is the
place for you.
There will be a full schedule of music
during both days of the fair. This year's
eclectic lineup of talent features some of
the area's best musicians and performers. There is truly something for everyone with children's acts along with
Latin, Caribbean, R&B and good old rock
and roll music.
Don't miss the Billy Hector Blues Band
when they take the stage at 4:30 p.m. on
Saturday and TV's "The Voice" runner
up in 2014 Audra McLaughlin and her
country band when they entertain the
crowd at noon on Sunday. Keep the party
going with Parrot Beach performing
their tribute to Jimmy Buffet at 4:00 p.m.
on Sunday.
What County Fair would be complete
without 4-H exhibits? Proud 4-H mem-

bers will display their hard

work ranging from arts,
crafts, plants, animal,
sewing and needlework.
They will also show off
their culinary expertise
with cakes, pies, cookies,
bread, jellies and jams, just
to name a few. If you would
like to submit your handiwork,
please
visit
www.camdencounty.com for submission
requirements and deadlines.
Of course, it wouldn't be a County Fair
without plenty of food on hand. Also returning this year is the popular beer and
wine garden. As always, the best part is
that admission to the Camden County
Fair and parking are free.
We would like to thank our generous
sponsors for supporting this year's Camden County Fair including Forman
Mills, Camden County College, Rutgers
University, the Sun Newspapers and La
Mega 105.7 FM.
Camden County College is located at
200 College Drive in the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township conveniently located just off exit 7B of Route
42. The 2016 Camden County fair is open
on Sep. 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on
Sep. 18 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
