How was everyones summer?
Show of hands: who is 12 years old? 13? 14? (born 2002-2004)
Did anyone travel over the summer? Where to? Who went the farthest?
Who has one sibling? 2? More than 2?
Introduce self:
Canada
BYUI: Science degree
University of Lethbridge currently
Family is important to me, like horseback riding, archery, and
jogging
Hopes for the class: learn, stay on task, have fun
We will be making magnets in first unit
I will be available to help, feel free to ask.

Syllabus, units done throughout the year, read headings with them. I will be
teaching the first 2 units. Introduce key concept for magnetism, have students
write it out in notebook (have smartboard activity). First done write it on copy
for unit board, put on unit board.
Find in text what chapters each unit is, write it down beside unit heading
Check who has textbook: bring to class!
One exercise book label as science

Class agreement:

While others are waiting

for other to finish, they can
flip through text, find where
the magnets chapter is.

What rules do we need in class to learn effectively? Write on whiteboard

key points. Keep a copy to refer back to.
Eg. Punctuality, seek help when needed, participation: raise hands
and wait to be called on vs. jumping in the discussion. 1 talk at a
time. What could you do to if you finish work early? Draw or read.
To do well, come to class, participate, complete homework and
keep up with readings. As you put forth the effort, you will do well.
Class rules?
Bingo: Electromagnet, BEAMS, beam, experiment, Force, Laboratory,
Magnet, Magnification, Microscope, Science, Scientist, Solid, Teamwork,
Temperature, Theory.
Draw chart with 9 squares, pick a word for each square and write it in.
Read definition and have them guess the word and if they have it on their
paper they fill it in. First one to get a line wins the round.
Winner can be one to help open up science mail box that arrived.
Open science mail box, ask class what items are, how or why they might be
used. If they are unsure, have them look it up on the internet.

Refer back to class

agreement if there are
classroom management
issues

What is one thing you are excited to learn about this year? Any questions?
Excited to be your teacher!

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
I think I was a bit timid at first with teaching grade 8 for the first time. I did step up and get them organized. I need
to get them going faster so we can begin class on time. Although now they do know what they need out to start
since we went over it. The internet stopped working and things were not loading properly, so I went onto the next
thing and kept discussion going as I sorted things out. We did not do bingo, but we did do boys verses girls for the
unit planning smart book, then winning team got to open the mail box. I ended up doing class expectations closer
at the beginning of the lesson seeing as how students were wanting to talk.
