based on an ethical system.
Revelation
-

Is the transmission of knowledge from the divine being to a human.

Includes biblical revelation but also revelation evident throughout the whole of human
history.
Revelation is knowledge given by god to human beings about persons, events and
things previously hidden or only partly known.
Gods fullest revelation occurs through words, deeds and events associated with the
person of Christ.
Is how God is revealed to us (Scripture, Jesus etc)

Salvation
-

Belief that human beings require deliverance from God from sin and darkness
Process in which human beings are saved or brought to fullness of life in God.

Christians have 3 main beliefs about salvation.

1. Only in heaven a persons deepest desire for love, peace and justice will be completely
fulfilled.
2. You cant do it on your own, only through Christ.
3. Jesus Christ is central to salvation
Christians main belief is that the human person is an image of god with intellect, free will
and power of self-determination
For Christian morality the main sources of revelation/guidance include:
-

The Ten Commandments (Decalogue) (exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:5-21) The
ten commandments are derived from the word of God himself on Mt Sinai to Moses.
The Golden Rule (Matthew 22:36-67)
The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:7)
Actions based on love (1 Corinthians 13:1)
love one another as I have loved you (John 13:34)

The Decalogue (The 10 commandments)

-

Ten words from God

The guidelines for living from Gods revelation to Moses on Mt Sinai in Israel (Exodus
20:2-17, Deuteronomy 5:6-21)
The Decalogue summed up the type of relationship that Israel should have with God.
For Christians, observance of the 10 commandments is based on love not fear.

Brings Christians back to loving god and their neighbours as they should love
themselves.

The Beatitudes
-

Is the name given to the 9 sayings of Jesus in Matthew 5:3-12 and the 4 in Luke 6:2023.
The 9 given by Matthew praise people for various virtues that could be cultivated. Eg.
Poverty of spirit, meekness and hunger for righteousness.
In the 4 given by Luke Jesus congratulates his listeners for conditions of real poverty,
hunger and desolation by promising future rewards from god. The four consoling are
followed by 4 threatening.

Jesus Commandment of love

-

Understood in a two part context

1. Christian awareness of the mystery of the hidden God of love who is
revealed in the person of jesus who ministered, was crucified, died and
rose from the dead.
2. The way in which Christians understand God as the holy trinity- as father
the creator, son and spirit- the god of love who is 3 persons in one.
Can only be understood through insight that god is love.

Agape: Boundless love of god (John 3:16)
