At start of class question: How would you write 999?

They are grouped together.
I could only appear before V or X
X could only appear before L or C.
C could only appear before D or M.
999 written CMXCIX not IM

1000-100, 100-10, 10-1

Larger numbers put a stroke above the symbol making it 1000 times
larger. What if I have X with a line? 10 000.

Back to the system we use today. How do we write big numbers?
How many times does your heart beat in 1 year? Have students count

students count their beats. Write it down. There are 60 min. in 1 hour, 24
hours in 1 day, 365 days per year. Or Take your number and multiply by
525600 (write on front board). This will be how many times your heart
beats in a year, write down your answer. How do you say it?
Write out number chart in notes for trillion, billion, and millions.
Go over how to say the numbers-written form and simple form.
Go back to their heartbeat and have them write it in written form.
Can anyone think of an example of how big a million is?

Introduce project: it is on managebac. Pick Egyptian, Mayan, or
Chinese-Japanese system. You will have two or three class periods to
work on project, Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesday come prepared for
peer review. Present on Wednesday. (If time, most likely next class.)
Open discussion: What is one thing you learned today? Questions?

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
Skipped the activity. Gave homework.
Things I did well were I kept a good pace, kept to timing of roman numerals for first half and big numbers for
second half. I used student involvement, asking questions, thumbs up/down for understanding, writing answer on
board, making corrections. I had the projector set up, then my computer randomly restarted, then the projector
didnt work, for sake of time we just watched the story of How big is a million on my laptop, it is a small class so it
works. I used voice inflection and have fun when I teach. I liked the heart beat example, it let the students calculate
how many times their heart beats in a year. I made good clarity questions. For example, one student wrote on
board an answer that was wrong in writing number from roman numerals, but so close. We went over how to get
the correct answer. Then I asked, how come we add them here? Before we had been subtracting. It is because
order matters, and I could see the lightbulb moment in the student. I should have done one more example for
formative assessment on that type of number.
I need to explain how to say the large numbers out loud better, kind of ran out of time for that part. Also when we
write the numbers down we group them in sets of three. I said they are grouped in three but I should be more
specific. I should scaffold from a small number to a larger number in writing in simple form and written form. I could
have skipped the story book and just focused on the number of heart beats example. I should use titles and write
things with more clarity with the topic. I will put extra notes down as a reminder for exactly how I will set it up.
