Explain the idea and Orwells perspective in relation to it.

1) How is this idea conveyed? Closely analyse the text, providing THREE
examples (including quotes/evidence). Also consider techniques and their
impact.
2) Research other popular writers from the post-war period. Were they
writing in relation to the same idea?

How government control can remove humanity

Answers
1. Orwell exemplifies the suppression of individual thought throughout his
text in reflecting the oppressive totalitarian regime the characters are
confined in. The society, corrupted by fascist ideals, controls its individuals
through the manipulation of truth and imposes restrictions and censorship
towards those whom conform to these vast influences, which reflect their
daily behaviour based on these guidelines. Orwells perception against
government control is contextualised through his involvement in the
Burma Police Force, forced to condemn those inferior to him and his
helplessness against the authorities. His experiences reflect this attitude
towards this issue, where government control may overshadow ones
rights and dehumanise individuals in their social, personal, cultural and
political actions.
2. The idea within the suppression of individual thought and actions are
exemplified through the control of societal morals by the thought police,
such that with the use of telescreens to monitor potential individuals who
may rebel against this society. As depicted Any sound that Winston made,
above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover,
so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque
commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no
way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.
embodies this concept of individuals being denied the freedom of thought
and expression, as well as being removed of their social and personal
rights. Similarly, the diary excerpt displays flaws of this society, where if
detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death.
Orwell criticises this issue in communicating the corrupted values in
Winstons environment, where the more basic actions are condemned by
authorities. Winstons manipulation and torture by the Thought Police
reinforce this issue, highlighted though his interrogation in order to defy
the truth and acknowledge what is wrong. As quoted Four! five! Four!
Anything you like. Only stop it, stop the pain!, Winstons conflicted
perception is evident through him unknowing to what is perceived as write
or wrong, shaping is false identity in losing ones knowledge and morals.
