Distracted Driving
Campaign

West Kootenay Traffic and

West Kootenay Integrated Road
Safety Unit will be joining Traffic Services across the province
to conduct a month long campaign combating distracted
driving and ensuring occupant
restraint compliance.
We are still seeing drivers
using their cellphones in the
Kootenays. One of the biggest
misconceptions about cell phone
use in the vehicle is at intersections or while stopped in traffic.
This is particularly dangerous for
pedestrians and cyclists.
Police see cell phones in cup
holders or center consoles in the
vast majority of vehicle stops.
The best place for your cell phone
while driving is out of reach. With
smart phones specifically designed
to alert, notify and ultimately
distract, it is extremely tempting
to check your phone while driving or at an intersection if it is in
reach. There are a number of apps
available to help drivers combat
distracted driving such as the free
OneTap app which handles incoming calls while you are driving.
This campaign is particularly
timely with children heading back to school when drivers need to pay extra attention.
Expect to see police paying extra
attention in and around schools.

Search and Rescue Fundraising A

Huge Success!

The Endless Adventures Fundraising campaign for the West

Kootenay Search and
Rescue Training weekend was a huge success.
Endless Adventure raised
$2000 to help support
and alleviate the pressure on volunteers who
occasionally need to use their own funds for training and
equipment.
At the Saturday night dinner Andrea and Chris presented Gord and Bard of the Castlegar Society for Search
and Rescue (CSAR) a cheque, some prizes and equipment
for the weekend training. Gord of CSAR went on to thank
Chris and Andrea for their endless support throughout
the year for all Kootenay based Search and Rescue associations. Chris and Andrea also went above and beyond
by arranging for a Slocan River Adventure for the family
members of volunteers attending the training weekend.
Volunteers that do search and rescue provide this
region with a much needed service and if there is anything we can do to encourage, inspire and help we are
there, says Chris Ryman of Endless Adventure.
Along with the fundraising efforts there was a photo
contest that featured a recreation safety awareness contest
that had an amazing response; even prize sponsors such as
Kokanee Mountain Zipline showcased their safety features.
Everyone have fun outdoors and be safe!

Kootenay Conservation Program

Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF)

Request for Proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional
District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for
projects that will benefit conservation in the rural areas around
Kootenay Lake, specifically electoral areas A, D, and E within the
RDCK.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for
important projects that will contribute to the conservation of
our valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation
Fund (KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects
that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity.
The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and
habitat conservation, and open space conservation.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide
value for money through partnerships with other funders will
be given priority. Proponents must be a registered not-forprofit organization, First Nations band or local government.
Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a
qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will
review project proposals and make recommendations to the
RDCK for final funding approval.
To apply for funding, go to www.kootenayconservation.ca
and click on the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund tab.
Review the Terms of Reference, paying particular attention to
Section 8 Fund Design and then apply using the application
form provided.
The closing date for project submissions is
4:30 pm PDT October 31, 2016.
Project proposals must be delivered by email to
info@kootenayconservation.ca.

player that could, paid for his
seat the chopper was full in no
time. One of the players, RCMP
corporal Sean Begg from Kaslo,
thought a photo of himself in his
serge on a glacier might make a
great Christmas card
and so
with permission from his superiors he packed it along and at
intermission donned it and skated, while his teammates took
photos. From those photos came
the G oalie and the Mountie'
coined by CBC.ca as The Most
Canadian Photo, Ever.
Kaslo photographer Rick Wiltse
has given the Kaslo arena per-

mission to sell the photo with

half of the monies raised going
towards the new condensers the
Kaslo arena so desperately needs.
If you would like to own or gift a
striking piece of Canadiana while
also donating to 2 worthwhile
causes, then this photo is for you
and can be easily ordered off the
arena website...

Begg, now an RCMP Sergeant
and stationed in another mountain town (Smithers) is thrilled
refugees will benet from his
t hrill of a lifetime experience,
and he says, I hope it further
enhances Canada' s reputation
on the world stage as a generous
and welcoming country.

Youth Tackle
The Wild
Kootenay
Lake/Nelson
RR 1&3

Wildsight' s Go Wild youth leadership summer trek was

a huge success. This summer, 15 youth from across the
region tackled some of the most rugged and remote wilderness in the Kootenays on Wildsight' s six day Go Wild
youth leadership adventure.
Led by Revelstoke' s Patagonia ambassador and pro skier
Leah Evans and Kimberley, wildlife biologist and wilderness guide Dave Quinn, the team traversed both Elk Lakes
and Height of the Rockies Provincial parks.
It was the opportunity of a lifetime. It allowed me to
experience the power and serenity of the mountains on a
whole new level and tune into my own wild side. I learned
so much about the wilderness that is my backyard and
the life that fills it, from mountain goats and porcupine to
sorrel and yarrow, said Cranbrook' s Chloe Mayes, age 16.
It was also an opportunity to connect with fabulous kids
who share my love of all things in the mountainsa.
The goal of the annual Go Wild program is to allow local
youth a chance to connect with the wilderness that defines
the Columbia Basin, and to connect with other likeminded young people from other communities. The teens,
aged 14 17, also learned backcountry cooking, no trace
wilderness travel, backcountry travel and map and compass skills to help them build their leadership capabilities.
This year, participants included youth from Revelstoke,
Cooper Creek, Riondel, Nelson, Cranbrook, Fairmont,
Golden, as well as Calgary and Edmonton.
What Leah and I are really trying to do is give youth
the opportunities that we had growing up to connect with
the wilderness and wildlife that really make this region

Talan
This very sweet 3 year old neutered boy is looking for a loving home.
We think he is a fox terrier mix (maybe with poodle or schnauzer?),
and anyone thinking about adopting him should research the
breed first. He can be a little timid at first meeting, but warms up
quickly; he loves other dogs as well. Talan hasn t been leash trained
yet, although he is smart and learns quickly, so we would give
preference to a home with a secure fenced yard. Talan is small only
10 lbs is fully vaccinated and microchipped. Please read his bio
at www.kaap.ca/adopt/talan. More information at 250-551-1053

globally significant. Our wild mountains need all the

friends they can get these days, given the recreational and
industrial development pressures that seem to be everywhere, said Go Wild program coordinator, Dave Quinn.
It really is an inspiration to spend six days with youth
carrying heavy packs through rugged terrain, over high
mountain passes, through hot sun and even snow this year
and hear nothing but awe and laughter.

Caf Langham A Matter Of Beauty

Caf Langham Inspired Ideas Speaker Series presents a
series on In Beauty We Walk at the Langham Theatre in
Kaslo with a talk, A Matter of Beauty.
Join Helen Sebelius and Corky Evans together as they
explore the theme of beauty and harmony in our world
and what it means to each of them. This is an ongoing dialogue in their family as Sebelius and Evans don' t always see
it the same way. Helen comes from a fine arts background
and Corky from the political platform, as a retired MLA.
Both are now farmers at their Against the Wind Farms in
Winlaw.
Growing up as a farm girl in Saskatchewan, Helen Sebelius has come full circle to her roots, but has worked in

the University of Calgary and Alberta College of Art and

Corky Evans on the other hand is a retired MLA (2009)
a local farmer, activist and storyteller. He continues to be
committed to community, growing organic garlic, squash,
potatoes and home raised turkeys. His life is a mosaic tapestry, as a Vietnam war-resister in 1969 and has worked a

Regional Aboriginal
Youth Conference

The Strengthening Our Relations Conference will return

to Selkirk College this autumn, aiming to engage Indigenous youth from around the region as they take part
in the third annual event. Called Reconciliation Through
Indigenous Youth Leadership, this year' s conference will
feature keynote speaker Wab Kinew.
The conference will be held from September 22 to 23 at
the Selkirk College Castlegar Campus and is open to youth
ages 15 to 29 from around the Columbia Basin and beyond.
Its aim is to build youth leaders, celebrate culture and examine a youth role in reconciliation. The conference provides
workshops that explore leadership skills, creative expression, reconnection with culture, traditional knowledge and
contemporary Indigenous issues including approaches to
reconciliation efforts, says Jessica Morin, Selkirk College
Aboriginal Services Liaison and event organizer.
The event' s invitation extends to First Nations, M" tis
and Inuit youth from all cultural backgrounds from
School Districts 5, 6, 8, 10, 19, 20 and 51 and Selkirk College. Indigenous youth participants from the traditional
territories within the Columbia Basin including Sinixt,
Ktunaxa, Syilx and Secwepemc are also encouraged to
attend. About 70 students will participate.
The conference will empower Indigenous youth from
throughout the region to take on leadership roles and
become presenters and hosts of this conference, says
Morin. Creating a space for Indigenous youth voice to
take the stage and develop leadership skills will provide
learning opportunities for all youth.
This year, keynote speaker Kinew will connect with the
youth audience. A writer, hip-hop musician, martial artist
and leader, Kinew has a multidisciplinary and sometimes
troubled background that makes him an engaging Indigenous public figure who demonstrates change is possible. He
gave up his self-destructive path and was recently elected to
the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. Wab is a young Indigenous leader who has been a powerful voice for Indigenous
youth, Morin says. He' s culturally connected and grounded
in his traditions. Kinew is also an Honourary Witness for
the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
Alongside the conference, the Mir Centre for Peace is
hosting an International Peace and Justice Studies Association Conference in Nelson. On Friday, a youth delegation
from Strengthening Our Relations will share their perspective with those exploring the theme Building the World We
Want at the Peace and Justice Studies Conference.
For more information, please contact Jessica Morin, Selkirk College Aboriginal Services Liaison at 250-365-1357.

HEALTH MATTERS

Expanded Primary Care Hours

Interior Health is pleased to announce
that starting in September the primary
care clinic at Victorian Community Health
Centre will be open from 9 am to 5 pm for
physician appointments on weekends. This
expansion to the current weekday service
is possible through an agreement reached
between local physicians, the Doctors of BC,
and Interior Health.
Under the agreement, the weekend
service will start Saturday, September 3,
and be trialed for a four month period.
Following the trial period, Interior Health
and the physicians will evaluate the service
based on how often weekend primary care
is being used to determine whether or not it
should continue into the future.
Individuals who wish to book an appointment to see their doctor on the weekend
should contact Health Centre staff at
250-353-2291 extension 5 during regular
weekday business hours (9 am to 5 pm,
Monday to Friday). Weekend access to the
health centre will be through the upstairs
entrance to the site (off 7th Street).
There will also be access to some walkin appointments for unexpected medical
issues. Depending on the number of booked
appointments and same-day patients, physicians may not be able to see all patients
who come to the health centre without an
appointment. All efforts will be made to
accommodate patients, but Interior Health
urges people to book appointments whenever possible.
Emergency Department hours at the
Health Centre remain unchanged, with
the ED open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5
pm. Kaslo and area residents who require
emergency care outside regular weekday
Emergency Department hours should call
9-1-1. If individuals are unsure of their care
needs, they are encouraged to call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 (24 hour service), to speak
to a nurse.

Keeping Connected
The seniors exercise group is starting up
again on Tuesday, October 11. This group
meets every Tuesday and Friday from 9:30
10:30 am at St. Andrews Heritage Hall, 500
4th Street, Kaslo. Newcomers are welcome.
The goal is to maintain the tness we
gained during the summer into the winter
and to next spring. The program involves
walking around the United Church and Hall
for as long as one feels able and then taking
part in guided exercises in sitting, standing
and walking. The aim is to keep us mobile
and strong and prevent slips and trips.
During the winter months it can often be
dif cult to walk outside, particularly when
it is slippery. This program provides an opportunity to walk and exercise indoors and
at the same time keeping connected with
our neighbours. The cost is $2 per session
or $12 for the whole season until the end
of April. For more information, contact
Elizabeth Scarlett 250-353-2563.
Feeding the Brain Success at
School Starts with Healthy Eating
It s a fact children who eat nutritious
food do better at school. Here are a few tips
to make healthy eating part of your back-toschool routine.
Get organized: A little planning goes a
long way. Make lunches the night before,
cut up vegetables for an easy after-school
snack, or grab something out of the freezer
for tomorrow s dinner.
Start the day off right: Eating rst
thing in the morning kick starts the brain
and helps children be more alert during the
school day. Put the toaster on the counter,
pull out the cereal, and set the table the
night before. Tired of cereal and toast? Try
poached eggs and cheese on a whole wheat
English muf n, oatmeal topped with walnuts and strawberries, or a yogurt, granola
and fruit parfait.
Involve kids in lunch planning, preparing and packing lunches. The more pride
your child has in his lunch, the more likely he
is to eat it! Lunches with high protein foods
Pennywise

like beans, nuts or meat keep kids full and

help them concentrate throughout the afternoon. Include foods from each of the four
food groups to provide balance. Here are a
couple of quick and healthy lunch ideas:
Wrap it up - grab a whole grain tortilla
and any extras from last night s dinner such
as cold chicken or roast beef and your child s
favorite veggies, cheese and hummus or
guacamole.
Dunk a lunch try pita triangles, carrot,
cucumber or red pepper sticks and bean dip.
Finish off the meal with fruit and yogurt.

Offer healthy snacks: Children are often
hungry after school. Having an after-school
snack prepped and ready for your child
helps them make a healthy choice and gives
you a little time to get dinner on the table.
Try offering fresh fruit or cut up veggies and
dip. Nut butters, whole grain crackers, cubes
of cheese and yogurt also make healthy
snacks. Add fresh or frozen fruit to a pitcher
of water for a refreshing thirst quenching
after school drink.
Eat together whenever and wherever
you can: Preparing, cooking, and eating
meals together provides time to connect.
Children who eat with their families once
a day perform and behave better at school.
Meal time is a great time for parents to
model healthy food choices and to check
in with kids and chat about another exciting school year!
