Questions:

1. What do you know about Africa?

2. What do you know about the export of Africans to the New World?
3. Express your ideas and insights related to the picture advert.
Answers
1. Africa is the world's second largest and second most populous continent. It is considered

the place of origin of humans, strongly believed because of findings of human

fossils dating back millions of years ago. It contains diverse culture, language
and ethnic groups which are stereotypically and collectively known as
blacks or Negroes.
2. What I know about the African slave trade is that Africans were abducted by
the white people to be sold or traded in America or to Europe. Most of the
African slaves are sold in an auction where they end up to different
plantations where they are forced to work. They are also bought for hard
labors since most Africans have well-built physique.
3. Its sad that Africans were treated inhumanely. They are discriminated merely
of their different color and their culture. The picture just goes to show that
racism has been present since early times. We cannot blame them if they
hate discrimination so much. Often, African-Americans are known to be
hostile to whites even to this day. Despite the nations being united, there is
still diversity and social injustice from majority to minority group. Its ironic;
we are united to be divided.

Summary of Tribal Scars

The story starts with a group of men, meeting at a friends place, discussing different topics and
subjects. A certain man in the group, Saer, ends up questioning the existence of tribal scars. To know the
answer, they questioned different people regarding their opinions and ideas about it. They each had their
stories to tell but Saer proved their opinions all wrong. He explained to them the answer in a story:
It starts with a slave ship, called the African, being docked in a bay full of African slaves to be
traded. It was later raided and looted by a group of men being led by a slave trader named Momutu.
Amoo, a native of the land, helped the gang in raiding the ship in exchange for her daughter Iome, who
fell victim to abduction for slave trade. Momutu was saved from the raid of slave traders because he was
out of the village that time. He later found out the whole story from his mother-in-law, who was spared
because of her elephantiasis. With that, he served Momutu for 2 months in order to find his daughter.
After the fight, he looked and finally found her. They had a touching reunion together. After freeing the
prisoners, Momutu ordered his men to deliver them to the shore together with the loot and later blew the
ship. Despite knowing that the slaves would only be re-selled, Amoo still helped them for his daughters
sake. They settled for their next raid. During nighttime, they had a feast for their successful exploit.
Momutu called Amoo for a drink and the latter refused, saying that he would like to go back to his village
with his daughter. Momutu denied his request and instead told him that they can go back after one last
raid which Amoo accepts. One of Momutus men questioned Amoo why he would risk his life for his
daughter when he himself had killed his wife to prevent her to become a prisoner. He exclaimed, saying
that he doesnt want another one of his family to become a slave. After the discussion, he went back.
Momutu and his men discussed how valuable Amoo and his daughter are to be traded. They plan to
capture both of them after their last raid. Luckily, Amoo knew of their plot from the very beginning and told
his daughter that they would escape from them during their planned raid. A few days past, they arrived in
the forest where the raid would happen. Momutu had ordered one of his trusted men to keep an eye on
Amoo and Iome. The latter was carving a wooden doll for her daughter when the former came to him. He
questioned again why he would like to go back to his village. He told his past story to him; about wanting
to be the hunter than being the hunted. After the long talk, one of his men told him that their next target
has arrived. All went to their position for a surprise attack. As the caravan arrived, they ambushed and a
fight broke out. During the commotion, Amoo killed their guard and escaped together with Iome deep into
the forest. After a few weeks, they arrived to their village. It was almost empty, with a few people living.
There they were greeted with fear at first but later was overjoyed on their return. Iome was taken in by her
mother-in-law and Amoo was taken to the elders to some questioning. They questioned him of the events
and he told them that they should relocate the village deeper into the forest because Momutu and his men

would surely come to this place. The elders decided to make preparations for their relocation. The next
few weeks were peaceful and all villagers worked hard for their preparations. Before the day of their travel
to their new location, they held a banquet and enjoyed the night. On the day of their transfer, they were
greeted by Momutus men. Commotion broke out; the villagers went into a panic and instinctively went
deeper into the forest. Amoo quickly ran with Iome and his mother-in-law too. Because of her disease,
progress was slow. Amoo could escape by himself but he could not afford to leave his family behind. He
had an idea and told them that this could save Iome. He grabbed an antiseptic plant. He grabbed his knife
towards Iome and made scars all over her body and wrapped the plant to her. Just after the dramatic
event, the slave traders arrived and captured Amoo. He was brought back to the bay together with a few
captured prisoners. Later in the story, a group of slave traders went to Iomes village where she was
captured but later spared because of her scars. Her skin cant be used anymore for making leather. Soon,
the news spread all around from different villages. Years and centuries past, diverse scars are seen from
our ancestors today. That is how our ancestors have the tribal scars, they did not want to become slaves.
