27. (D) The severe tropical typhoon Nida, also
called Tropical Storm Carina in Philippines,
has recently hit the China's Guangdong
Province. The gale-force wind with up to 150
km/hr speed has caused heavy rain followed
the tropical typhoon. This is the strongest
typhoon to hit the Pearl River Delta since
1983. It was caused by a tropical depression
that had developed about 1,020 km to the
east-southeast of Manila, Philippines. The
cyclonic system was located within a
favourable environment for development of
cyclone with low vertical wind shear and very
warm sea surface temperatures.
28. (A) Petermann Glacier is a large glacier
located in North-West Greenland to the east
of Nares Strait. It connects the Greenland
ice sheet to the Arctic Ocean near 81N. As
per the recently released NASA satellite
imagery, a massive iceberg has broken off of
a glacier in Greenland, in what could be the
latest indication of global warming. The
NASA images show the massive chunk of ice
breaking off of the Petermann Glacier on the
north-western coast of Greenland. The
glacier produced a similar ice island, twice
as large in 2010. NASA says that the crack
in the glacier had been visible since 2001,
and that its polar-orbiting Aqua satellite had
observed the break on July 16th-17th. On July
15th/16th 2012, a 130 km2 (50 square-miles)
chunk calved from the northern tip of the
glacier.
29. (A) Prof. Ahmed Zewail (70), Egyptian Chemist
and Nobel Laureate, has recently passed
away in United States. Zewail won the Nobel
Chemistry Prize in 1999 for his pioneering
work in femtochemistry, the study of
chemical reactions in ultra-short time scales.
He was professor at the California Institute
of Technology and a Science Advisor to
President Barack Obama and was the first
Arab scientist to win the Nobel Prize.
