InVenezuela,HalliburtonConsultingwasbroughtintoplanredevelopmentofthematureElCaritoField,wheretheclientwas
experiencinga26percentannualdeclineinproduction.ThefieldisthesecondlargestproducerintheMaturinsubbasin,
encompassingsome150squarekilometers.Themainreservoirpresentsahighdegreeofheterogeneityresultingfromcomplex
compressionalfaultingandvaryingsediments,anditshydrocarbonsincludegas,condensate,volatileandblackoils,andtar
mat(oilmixedwithwetsand).

TheclientsoughtgreaterinsightofElCaritosdynamicsandhowtorevivethefield,aswellaswhattechnologiesHalliburton
couldprovideinVenezuela.Thekeytowinningtheworkandproposingacustomizedsolutionwaslisteningandunderstanding
theclientsneeds.ItspersonnelknewfrompreviousexperiencethatHalliburtoncollaboratescloselytoalignwiththeir
objectives,evaluatedifficultfieldchallenges,anddevelopthebestsolution.
Thechallengesentailedaddressingcomplexgeologicalfactorsandintegratingalotofdifferentdatasets,whichinvolved
gathering,connectingandanalyzingalltheavailableinformationonthefield,thereservoir,and40wells.
ConsultingassembledamultidisciplinaryteamofexpertsfromvariousPSLs,whothenappliedaprovencomprehensive
workflowtocorrelateandstudythedata(seeFigure1).Theworkflowanditsapplicationtoadifferentfieldweredetailedina
papercowrittenbyseveralHalliburtonemployeesandpresentedinOctober2015ataSocietyofPetroleumEngineers
conferenceinVenezuela(SPEWVS638:OptimizationandEnhancedProductivityStudyFurrialField).
Thekeytohandlingallthedatawastofocusonhighlevelcriteriaformechanicalconditionanddynamicbehaviorintheinitial
wellselection,saidConsultantLeninJoseRodriguez.Withthatwewereabletoprioritizethewells,whichthenallowedusto
concentrateoureffortsondetailedproductivityanalysisforhighpotentialwells.
Theworkflow(ormethodology)consistsofthefollowingactivities:
Integrationandanalysisofexistingmodelsofthereservoir,thewellsandthesurfacethatincludemechanicalcondition,perforations,
producingzones,andreserves
Analysisofhistoricalandforecastdataonthewells,thereservoir,andthefield,includingthepositionoforiginalfluidcontacts,which
arekeytoestimatingreservesanddevelopingstepstorevitalizethefield
Assessmentofproductionefficiencyandexistingartificialliftsystems
Evaluationofdrillingandcompletionhistories,includingneighboringwells,andidentificationofcandidatewellsforintervention
Diagnosisofproblemsincandidatewellsandidentificationofpossibleintegratedsolutions
Formulationofafieldredevelopmentstrategytoenhanceoilrecovery.

Overall,theanalysisincludedsuchfactorsasgeology,welllogs,petrophysics,pressurehistory,productionandreservesover
time,perforations,artificialliftsystems,surfacefacilities,andeconomicdata.
TheConsultingteamdeliveredtotheclientseveraldifferentworkoverproposalstoimprovebothoilandgasproductionwhile
maintainingadequatereservoirpressure.Ofthe40wellsanalyzedoversixweeks,20wellswereidentifiedasyieldingan
increaseofapproximately7,000barrelsperdayinincrementalproduction,animpressive35+percentincreaseintheproduction
levelofthesewellsatthestartoftheproject.Thefirsttwointerventionsaloneyielded900bpd.

Weworkasateamwithourclientstointegratetechnicaldisciplinesandformulatepractical,effectivesolutionstomaturefield
challengesthatdrawonourglobalexperience,explainedSteveKnabe,directorofConsultinginLatinAmerica.Theresultis
thatwedelivertremendousvaluetoourclientswhilereducingtechnicalandoperatingrisks.
Manyoperatorshavenothadthemanpowertoconducttoptobottomtechnicalevaluationoftheirchallengingmaturefieldsin
thelastdecadeormore,saidProjectManagerFrancisPeretti.BringinginHalliburtonConsultingeliminatesthatbottleneck
andenablesclientstodramaticallyimprovefieldperformance.Wealsoensureaseamlesstransitionfromtechnicalanalysisto
implementationofworkoversandotherinterventionsbyotherHalliburtonservicelines.
Perettiaddedthattheapplicationofthemethodologydemonstrateshowitcanbeusedtoredevelopanymaturefield,notjust
thoseinVenezuela.
