PROGRAMME

Synopsis
Rapid grow in the population of countries has significantly increased
demands for construction of residential buildings as well as offices and
hotels. This, in return, has made construction of taller buildings inevitable.
While high-rise structures share many basics with short and mid-rise
structures, their design and construction has put forward new challenges for
engineers. This one-day course targets the most important design matters
that practice engineers have to take into consideration when dealing with
tall buildings. In this course, wind induced load and vibrations to tall
buildings will be described by explaining provisions of Eurocode 8 and
presenting a simple example and a real case study project. The general
framework of seismic design of structures will be presented with more
emphasis on the performance-based approach which is often being
employed for high-rise buildings. Finally, some analysis and construction
matters like structural health monitoring will be briefly introduced. This
course would be beneficial for architects, structural engineers and
construction site supervisors.
Biodata of Speaker

Dr. Mohammadreza Vafaei (PhD, P.Eng., M.ASCE, M.EERI, M.SSA) is

currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM JB and a
research fellow of Forensic Engineering Center, and Institute of Noise and
Vibration, UTM. As a Professional Engineer previously serving a consultant
company in Iran, he has led seismic design of numerous structures including
tall residential and office buildings, airport terminals, air traffic control
towers, lattice telecommunication towers, bridges, water reservoirs and
monumental structures. His expertise includes seismic design of special
structures, seismic retrofit, damage identification and nonlinear structural
analysis. Dr. Vafaei is professional in seismic design using structural software
like SAP2000, ETABS and SAFE. He is also expert in internationally employed
seismic codes like UBC, ASCE/SEI 7-10 and Eurocode 8.
