PREFACE
To the grade five pupils:

This Science 5 module is based on Basic Education Curriculum

(BEC) of 2010 which will help you to understand about yourself and the
wonders of how you were made.
Try to find out the amazing science concept of how your life
begins. Learn the wonderful discoveries and continuous advancement
of science and technology.
As you move from one lesson to another, doing the activities
given, you are gradually brought to a higher forms of learning by
observing
describing,
comparing
communicating,
predicting,
manipulating, quantifying and experimenting to test the hypothesis.
You will also encounter questions before each lesson to measure
your intellectual capacity and stock up knowledge of the lesson, then
activities to guide you to your discovery of life processes.

Finally, challenges or comprehension questions will be given to

measure your ability of retention.
We hope that this module will be of great help to your search for
wisdom and knowledge in your study of science in grade 5.

VIII. Summary:
Living things multiply their own kind through reproduction. Human
being reproduces sexually. Male reproductive system consist sexual organs
that work together to produce and deposit sperm cells to the womans body.
These male reproductive organs are: testes, epididymis, vas deferens,
prostate gland, penis, urethra and scrotum.
On the other hand female reproductive system is designed to
accommodate the sperm cells and nourish the fertilized egg cell in her
womb. Female reproductive organs are ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus,
vagina, cervix, and vulva.

Activity 3 Nocturnal Emission
Read the research.
Nocturnal Emission (wet dreams)
Nocturnal emission is common during teenage and early adult years.
However nocturnal emission may happen any time after puberty.
Nocturnal emission sometimes called wet dreams; it is the automatic
expulsion of the semen through the penis while the young man is asleep.
Semen is excreted by the prostate gland that opens into the urethra. The
semen simply accumulates until it overflows during nocturnal emission. It is
harmless and a normal occurrence in life among males.
Put a check on the blank if the sentence is a fact and x if it is fiction.
___1. Nocturnal emission happens in boys only.
___2. Nocturnal emission is an expulsion of semen among boys while
sleeping
___3. Nocturnal emission is dangerous.
___4. There is an involuntary orgasm in nocturnal emission.
___5. Nocturnal emission may happen as early as 8years old in boys.
___6. Nocturnal emission that a boy may experience at age 14 is abnormal.

4 A and B)
New life begins at fertilization inside the mothers reproductive tract
known as fallopian tube. It occurs when one matured egg cell released from
one of the ovaries joins or unite with one sperm cell. The fertilized egg or
zygote undergoes repeated cell division, as it travels down to the uterus or
womb. This is the beginning of pregnancy or gestation. However if zygote
fails to implant itself other than the uterus; such pregnancy is called ectopic
pregnancy.
Zygote becomes an embryo after a series of cell division. Embryo is
connected to the placenta by the umbilical cord. All materials needed by the
40 |

embryo are supplied by the mother through the placenta. The embryo is
protected by a sac of liquid that helps to become moist. This sac of liquid is
called amniotic sac and the liquid is called amniotic fluid.
After 8-10 weeks of pregnancy, embryo becomes a complete human
being with complete body organs and body system. It is now called a fetus.
After nine months of pregnancy or gestation, the baby is ready to be born.
However if it fails to complete its nine months of gestation, the baby is called
a pre-mature baby.
