Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies are defined as the application of various techniques to
the muscular structure and soft tissues of the human body. Specifically:
Massage: The application of soft-tissue manipulating techniques to the body, generally intended
to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage
account for several different techniques.
Bodywork: Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or
repatterning to affect structural changes to the body.
Somatic: Meaning of the body. Many times this term is used to denote a body/mind or whole
body approach distinguished from a physiology-only or environmental perspective.
There are more than 250 variations of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapies and many
practitioners utilize multiple techniques. The application of these techniques may include but is
not limited to, stroking, kneading, tapping, compression, vibration, rocking friction, and
pressure to the muscular structure or soft tissues of the human body. This may also include nonforceful passive or active movement and/or application of techniques intended to affect the
energetic systems of the body. The use of oils, lotions, and powders may also be included to
reduce friction on the skin.
Note: Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies specially exclude diagnosis, prescription,
manipulation or adjustments of the human skeletal structure, or any other service, procedure or
therapy which requires a license to practice orthopedics, physical therapy, podiatry, chiropractics,
osteopathy, acupuncture, or any other profession or branch of medicine.

This is the most common types of massage therapy in the United States. It is also as Swedish
massage or simply massages therapy.
Massage therapist use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial
layers of muscle using massage lot5ion or oil.
Swedish massage therapy can be very gentle and relaxing.
Swedish massage is what most of us think about when we hear the word massage. It is
sometimes also called traditional massage. Swedish massage is performed by a trained and
licensed massage therapist who lubricates the bare skin with massage oil and uses gliding and
other movements to massage the whole body. It usually takes 50 to 60 minutes, but you can get
a longer service or combine it with another one, like a body scrub.
The purpose of Swedish massage is to relax the entire body, but it also has number of other
health benefits. Swedish massage improves blood circulation, increases the level of oxygen in
the blood, helps the body removes toxins, improves flexibility, eases tension and helps with pain
management.
Aromatherapy Massage:
Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy but with highly concentrated plant oils, called
essential oils, added to the massage oil or lotion.

The nostrils are attracted to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system
controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones.
When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and
affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune
system.
Essentials oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin.
Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others
energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their purported properties:
Calming-chamomile,lavender,geranium
Uplifting-ylang ylang, clary sage, rose,neroli
Energizing-rosemary
Cleansing- rosemary
Decongesting-eucalyptus, pine, tea tree
