Oil nears Fla. beaches; BP tries risky cap move

PORT FOURCHON, La. —
The BP oil slick drifted close to
the Florida Panhandle’s white sand
beaches for the first time as submers-
ible robots a mile below the Gulf of
Mexico made the latest risky attempt
to control the seafloor gusher.
Even if it works, the current
mission to cut a major pipe and cap
it would only reduce the flow, not
stop it. If it fails, it could make the
largest oil spill in U.S. history even
worse. The best hope for sealing
the leak, until a permanent fix is
possible in August, failed Saturday,
when engineers were unable to plug
it with heavy mud in a maneuver
called a top kill.
Investors ran from BP’s stock
for a second day today, reacting to
the top kill failure and the Justice
Department’s announcement that it
was looking at criminal and civil
probes into the spill, although the
department did not name specific
targets for prosecution.
Shares in British-based BP PLC
were down 3 percent this morn-
ing in London trading after a 13
percent fall the day before. BP has
lost $75 billion in market value
since the spill started with an April
20 oil rig explosion and analysts
expect damage claims to total bil-
lions more.
In Florida, officials confirmed
an oil sheen Tuesday about nine
miles from Pensacola beach, where
the summer tourism season was just
getting started.
Winds were forecast to blow
from the south and west, pushing the
slick closer to western Panhandle
beaches.
Emergency crews began scour-
ing the beaches for oil and shoring
up miles of boom. County officials
will use it to block oil from reaching
inland waterways but plan to leave
beaches unprotected because they
are too difficult to protect and easier
to clean up.
“It’s inevitable that we will see it
on the beaches,” said Keith Wilkins,
deputy chief of neighborhood and
community services for Escambia
County.
The oil has been spreading in the
Gulf since the Deepwater Horizon
rig exploded six weeks ago, killing
11 workers and eventually sinking.
The rig was being operated for BP,
the largest oil and gas producer in
the Gulf.
Crude has already been reported
along barrier islands in Alabama
and Mississippi, and it has pol-
luted some 125 miles of Louisiana
coastline.
More federal fishing waters
were closed, too, another setback
for one of the region’s most impor-
tant industries. More than one-third
of federal waters were off-limits

Fisherman Hong Le, who came
to the U.S. from Vietnam, had
rebuilt his home and business after
Hurricane Katrina wiped him out.
Now he’s facing a similar situation.
“I’m going to be bankrupt very
soon,” Le, 53, said as he attended
a meeting for fishermen hoping for
help. “Everything is financed; how
can I pay? No fishing, no welding.
I weld on commercial fishing boats
and they aren’t going out now, so
nothing breaks.”
Le, like other of the fishermen,
received $5,000 from BP PLC, but
it was quickly gone.
“I call that ‘Shut your mouth
money’,” said Murray Volk, 46,
of Empire, who’s been fishing for
nearly 30 years. “That won’t pay
the insurance on my boat and house.
They say there’ll be more later, but
do you think the electric company
will wait for that?”
BP may have bigger problems,
though.
Attorney General Eric Holder,
who visited the Gulf on Tuesday,
would not say who might be tar-
geted in the probes into the largest
oil spill in U.S. history.
“We will closely examine the
actions of those involved in the
spill. If we find evidence of ille-
gal behavior, we will be extremely
forceful in our response,” Holder
said in New Orleans.
The federal government also
ramped up its response to the spill
with President Barack Obama order-
ing the co-chairmen of an indepen-
dent commission investigating the
spill to thoroughly examine the
disaster, “to follow the facts wherev-
er they lead, without fear or favor.”
The president said that if laws
are insufficient, they’ll be changed.
He said that if government over-
sight wasn’t tough enough, that will
change, too.
BP has tried and failed repeated-
ly to halt the flow of the oil, and the
latest attempt like others has never
been tried before a mile beneath the
ocean. Experts warned it could be
even riskier than the others because
slicing open the 20-inch riser could
unleash more oil if there was a kink
in the pipe that restricted some of
the flow.
“It is an engineer’s nightmare,”
said Ed Overton, a Louisiana State
University professor of environmen-
tal sciences. “They’re trying to fit
a 21-inch cap over a 20-inch pipe a
mile away. That’s just horrendously
hard to do. It’s not like you and I

Engineers have put underwater
robots and equipment in place this
week after a bold attempt to plug
the well by force-feeding it heavy
mud and cement — called a “top
kill” — was aborted over the week-
end. Crews pumped thousands of
gallons of the mud into the well but
were unable to overcome the pres-
sure of the oil.
The company said if the small
dome is successful it could capture
and siphon a majority of the gush-
ing oil to the surface. But the cut
and cap will not halt the oil flow,
just capture some of it and funnel it
to vessels waiting at the surface.
BP’s best chance to permanently
plug the leak rests with a pair of
relief wells but those won’t likely
be completed until August.

“I’ll definitely miss the
kids more than anything,”
Adkins said. “I have so many
great memories of them.

girl said ‘I don’t like banan-

As Adkins reminisced, a
group of students filed into
the cafeteria to sing a few
songs with their teacher.
“Plus we get enter-
tained while we work,” she
laughed.
Even though children make
her job enjoyable and enter-
taining, Adkins will miss the
other staff members as well.
“I’ve met a lot of nice
women working here and
made a lot of great friends,”
she said. “It’s really like one
big family here at Franklin.”
Since the option of return-
ing to work after retiring is
out, Adkins has decided she
will spend her free time relax-
ing.
“I’m going to get some
rest. Maybe I’ll go to Florida
during the winter to get out
of the cold and away from
the snow,” she said. “I’d also
like to see some more of the
country. I think that would
be nice.”

silent? You’ll have to speak
up.
In a narrowly split decision,
the Supreme Court’s conser-
vative majority expanded its
limits on the famous Miranda
rights for criminal suspects
on Tuesday — over the dis-
sent of new Justice Sonia
Sotomayor, who said the rul-
ing turned Americans’ rights
of protection from police
abuse “upside down.”
Justice Anthony Kennedy,
who wrote the majority opin-
ion, said a suspect who goes
ahead and talks to police after
being informed he doesn’t
have to has waived his right
to remain silent. Elena Kagan,
who has been nominated by
President Barack Obama to
join the court, sided with the
police as U.S. solicitor gener-
al when the case came before
the court. She would replace
Justice John Paul Stevens,
one of the dissenters.

influences demanding, activist

NEW YORK — Supreme
Court nominee Elena Kagan’s
basic bio looks like this:
raised in a middle-class
Jewish family in Manhattan.
Two brothers. Mother taught
school. Dad was a lawyer.
Look closer, and you’ll find
a family tree richly populat-
ed with individuals of great
determination, intelligence
and activism. There’s even a
bona fide tree-hugger and a
leftist dissident in the lot.
Supreme Court justices are
as much biography as they are
resume. And because Solicitor
General Kagan never served
as a judge, her early influences
may help court-watchers fill in
the blanks on her world view.
Tidbits from Kagan’s youth
prefigure her achievements.
She was the first girl in her
synagogue to have a bat mitz-
vah. In high school, she was
president of student govern-
ment and donned judge’s robes
for a picture of the group.
Her late mother, Gloria
Kagan, came of age in an era
when women had few profes-
sional options, and relished the
idea of her daughter having a
“high-powered professional
career,” Elena once said.
Gloria was also an “ada-
mant patriot,” and like her
husband, whose father came

temptation to stare.)

and wring a few necks.
Lowden committed the
quintessential political gaffe
when she noted in a rural
Nevada town hall meeting
that doctors and patients used
to barter with chickens before
anyone thought it necessary
to involve the federal govern-
ment in health care.
Note to politicians: Never
mention an animal in a stump
speech unless you intend to
be saddled with the image for-
evermore. Heaven forbid she
should have mentioned hogs.
In fact, plenty of doctors and
lawyers have accepted in-kind
services, food or other prod-
ucts when a client couldn’t
But Tuesday’s majority said
that suspects must break their
silence and tell police they
are going to remain quiet to
stop an interrogation, just as
they must tell police that they
want a lawyer.
This decision means that
police can keep shooting
questions at a suspect who
refuses to talk as long as they
want in hopes that the person
will crack and give them some
information, said Richard
Friedman, a University of
Michigan law professor.
“It’s a little bit less
restraint that the officers have
to show,” Friedman said.
The ruling comes in
a case in which a suspect,
Van Chester Thompkins,
remained mostly silent for
a three-hour police inter-
rogation before implicating
himself in a Jan. 10, 2000,
murder in Southfield, Mich.
He appealed his conviction,
saying he had invoked his
Miranda right to remain silent
by remaining silent.
Kennedy, writing the
decision for the court’s con-
servatives, said that wasn’t
enough.
“Thompkins did not say
that he wanted to remain
silent or that he did not want

Gloria Kagan “set the bar

each and every one of her stu-
dents believe they were capa-
ble of anything in the world,”
said former student Erica
Goldman, a science writer
with a Ph.D. in biology.
“But to get there, they were
going to work harder than
they’d ever worked before,”
Goldman said.
Elena’s late father, Robert,
had a small law firm that most-
ly represented tenants. But he
was also devoted to unglamor-
ous local causes as chairman of
the community board. Among
them: securing housing for
poor families displaced by
construction of Lincoln Center,
and opposing Westway, a pro-
posed superhighway through
residential areas.
In the mid-70s, he even
tomatoes, corn and cucum-
bers cluttered many a country
doctor’s kitchen counter when
someone was short of cash.
Lowden’s off-hand remark,
which one might generously
interpret as a metaphor for
a more personal approach to
health care, was a gift to her
rivals, not to mention Comedy
Central. For Reid, making
chicken jokes is far easier than
defending a national health
care plan that more than half
of Nevadans want repealed.
The chicken effect, surely
a new political term, has had
a negative effect on Lowden’s
own poll numbers, but noth-
ing compared to the collective
efforts of her several oppo-
nents. Together with third-
party groups, they’ve spent
millions against Lowden’s
$980,000. The biggest spend-
er, however, has been Reid,
who has dropped $1.58 mil-
lion on ads.
The final push to next Tuesday
will be suitably tense even for
Nevada’s casino culture.
The Tea Party Express,
which helped push Scott
Brown over the top in
Massachusetts, has drafted its
350,000 national members to
call Nevada voters for Angle.
They’re planning a two-hour
“radiothon” Thursday to raise
money. Even a Reid-related
PAC, Patriot Majority, took

This is the third time this
session that the Supreme
Court has placed limits on
Miranda rights, which come
from a 1966 decision — it
involved police question-
ing of Ernesto Miranda in a
rape and kidnapping case in
Phoenix — requiring officers
to tell suspects they have the
right to remain silent and to
have a lawyer represent them,
even if they can’t afford one.
Earlier this term, the high
court ruled that a suspect’s
request for a lawyer is good
for only 14 days after the
person is released from police
custody — the first time the
court has placed a time limit
on a request for a lawyer —
and that police do not have
to explicitly tell suspects they
have a right to a lawyer dur-
ing an interrogation.

the end of government decid-
ing to do something with-
out any community input,”
Goodgold said.
In the summer of 1980,
Elena Kagan worked for
Liz Holtzman, a Democrat
running for U.S. Senate in
New York. That fall, after
Holtzman was defeated and
President Ronald Reagan was
elected, Elena wrote in The
Daily Princetonian, “Where
I grew up on Manhattan’s
Upper West Side, nobody
ever admitted to voting
Republican.” She added that
the “real Democrats” she had
known were “motivated by
the ideal of an affirmative
and compassionate govern-
ment. Perhaps because of this
background, I absorbed such
liberal principles early.”

state Senate’s taxation com-
mittee and of having supported
Reid. Lowden and her hus-
band did make a few campaign
contributions to Reid in the
1980s, and she did approve
slot fee increases in 1993 dur-
ing her first year in office.
When she chaired the commit-
tee in 1995, however, no taxes
were increased, prompting the
Nevada Taxpayers Association
to declare 1995 the state’s
“Best Legislative Session.”
Lowden has fired back,
pointing out Angle’s peculiar
legislative push for prisoner
massages. Undoubtedly, mas-
sages would help relieve some
of the stress of incarceration,
but Angle would feel like
she’d been Rolfed by the time
Reid finished pounding home
that bit of legislative whimsy.
All’s fair, as they say, but
the piling on against Lowden
delivers a clear message: Harry
Reid fears her. Those chickens
may come home to roost.

I am Susan, age
a try to write the column for
Mom. It is Ascension Day
and our family is home as
our church honors this day.
It is cold and rainy and I can-
not wait for it to warm up. I
like being outdoors. We had
a thunderstorm during the
night. It wasn’t a bad one
and my younger sisters and
brothers slept through it.
I was helping Mom get-
ting lunch but she didn’t need
help any more. Our baby
chicks are finally moved
out of the back porch. Sister
Lovina and my three broth-
ers had fun moving them
into the chicken coop. The
butchering of chickens goes
really fast. Sister Verena says
they look cute when they are
small but when they get big
they are ugly. I think she’s
just thinking the same as
me, dreading to help butcher
them.
We were all shook up the
other night. Dad came home
with our horse Ginger and
our buggy. He told Ginger
to back up so he could back
the buggy into the pole barn.
Ginger decided she didn’t
want to back up any more

away from her so

She seemed okay
and we were glad it
wasn’t worse. I hope
Ginger learned her
lesson about jump-
ing up in the air.
I always think it
would be interest-
ing to train horses
or ponies. When I
saw that happen to Ginger
I realized that I still have a
lot to learn. Dad says maybe
I could train little miniature
ponies because they would
be smaller to work with.
When brother Benjamin
heard that he said he’ll help
me if I ever do.
Next week, the whole
middle school is taking a
field trip to the science and
industry museum in Chicago,
Ill. Sister Verena and I both
get to go and we are very
excited. We will leave early
in the morning and come
home later at night. We have
15 days of school left for
this term.
Church services will be
here in 3 weeks. We will be
busy cleaning to prepare for
that. We also have to get the
rest of the garden planted.
It is now about 4 p.m.
and we were outside playing
basketball. It has quit raining
and it is nice and warm out-
side and the sun is shining.

DETROIT — The
Cleveland Indians ran into
the perfect team to give their
pitching staff some confi-
dence.
Jake Westbrook gave up a
run and was backed by Russell
Branyan and Shin-Soo Choo
homers, lifting Cleveland to
a 3-2 win over the Detroit
Tigers on Tuesday night.
Westbrook (3-3) gave up
five hits and a walk over 7
2/3 innings after giving up a
combined nine runs in his two
previous starts, leading to the
Indians starting the day with
an AL-worst 4.89 ERA.
“That’s the best game he’s
pitched this year,” Cleveland
manager Manny Acta said.
“That’s only the third game
we’ve won this season when
we’ve scored three or less
runs, so you see how impor-
tant it was for him to go deep
for us.”
Chris Perez stranded two
runners in the eighth by get-
ting Magglio Ordonez to pop
up. Perez gave up three runs
to the New York Yankees
without getting an out in his
previous outing.
Kerry Wood allowed an
unearned run on Alex Avila’s
RBI single after Branyan’s
2-out error at first base, let-
ting the Tigers pull within a
run before earning his third
straight save in four chances.
Jeremy Bonderman (2-3)
didn’t allow a run until
Branyan hit a solo home run in
the fifth. Choo followed with
a solo shot the next inning,
ending an 0-for-19 slump.
Mark Grudzielanek’s RBI
single in the eighth gave
Cleveland a 2-run cushion it
needed.
Westbrook had awful
results in his previous two
starts but didn’t have any
trouble with the offensively-
challenged Tigers until the
eighth inning.
Detroit scored only one
run in its previous game, a
loss to the Oakland Athletics,
after getting shut out by them
on Saturday.
It has lost eight out of
10 — scoring a combined 19
runs in those losses — since
reaching a season-high seven
games over .500 on May 20
and sharing the AL Central
lead with the Minnesota
Twins.
“As a manager, you beat
yourself up a bit, but I don’t
think you shake up your
lineup,” Detroit manager Jim
Leyland said. “Our lineup has
just been sputtering.”
The Tigers blew a chance
to make the series opener
with the Indians interesting
in the eighth inning, then did
it in the ninth before coming
up short.
Westbrook hit pinch-hit-

Cleveland from 2004 through
2006, is bouncing back from
elbow surgery in June of 2008

night.
The Braves moved to 1 1/2
games ahead of 2-time reign-
ing NL champion Philadelphia
with their 17th win in the last 21
games, including seven in a row.
They haven’t been in first this late
in the season since 2005, the last

Philadelphia is heading in the
opposite direction. The Phillies

hit his first major-league home

2004, hit a 0-1 pitch from Ted Lilly
(1-5) into the seats in the deepest
part of the ballpark in left-center
with Andrew McCutchen on and

The Pirates improved to 7-1

MIAMI — Jorge Cantu hit a
go-ahead double in the seventh
inning as Florida became the
latest team to rough up Trevor
Hoffman, sending the Marlins
over the Brewers.
Hoffman, baseball’s career
saves leader, took over with the
score 3-all. Chris Coghlan led
off with a double and scored on
Cantu’s hit; Ronny Paulino added
a 2-run single.
Hoffman allowed three runs in
one inning, leaving the struggling
closer with an 11.65 ERA.

Dieting for dollars? More US employees trying it

ATLANTA — How much
money would it take to get
you to lose some serious
weight? $100? $500?
Many employers are bet-
ting they can find your price.
At least a third of U.S. com-
panies offer financial incen-
tives, or are planning to
introduce them, to get their
employees to lose weight or
get healthier in other ways.
“There’s been an explosion
of interest in this,” said Dr.
Kevin Volpp, director of the
University of Pennsylvania’s
Center for Health Incentives.
Take OhioHealth, a hospi-
tal chain whose workforce is
mostly overweight. The com-
pany last year embarked on a
program that paid employees
to wear pedometers and get
paid for walking. The more
they walk, the more they win
— up to $500 a year.
Anecdotal success sto-
ries are everywhere. Half
of the 9,000 employees at
the chain’s five main hos-
pitals signed up, more than
$377,000 in rewards have
already been paid out, and
many workers tell of weight
loss and a sudden need for
slimmer clothes.
But will this kind of effort
BUSINESS
really put a permanent dent
in American’s seemingly
intractable obesity problem?
Not likely.
“It’s probably a waste of
time,” said Kelly Brownell,
director of Yale University’s
Rudd Center for Food Policy
and Obesity.
Brownell’s assessment is
harsher than most. But the
science seems to back him
up.
Only about 15 to 20 U.S.
studies have tried to evaluate
the effect of financial incen-
tives on weight loss. Most of
those studies were small and
didn’t look at whether such
measures worked beyond
a few months. None could
make conclusions about how
much money it takes to make
a lasting difference for most
people.
Perhaps the largest effort
to date was an observational
study by Cornell University.
It looked at seven employ-
er programs and the results
were depressing: The average
weight loss in most was little
more than a pound.
Sure, there are grounds
for optimism. Smaller experi-
ments report some success.
And other studies have shown
promising results against
tobacco. One study pub-
lished last year in the New
England Journal of Medicine,
co-authored by Volpp, found
that cash rewards of a few
hundred dollars nearly tripled
quit-smoking rates.
One problem: “Food is
more difficult than tobacco,”
said Steven Kelder, an epi-
demiology professor at the
University of Texas School
of Public Health.
While cigarettes can be
addictive, people don’t need
to smoke to live, and adver-
tising and clean-air restric-
tions curb tobacco’s pres-
ence. People must eat, how-
ever, and sugary drinks and
fatty snacks are everywhere,
Kelder and others said.
Health officials lament
that more than two-thirds of
American adults are over-
weight and one-third obese,
and lecture on fat’s role in
deaths from diabetes, heart
disease and other conditions.
In a campaign led by
Michelle Obama, federal
officials are emphasizing
several approaches to slim
the nation. Food companies,
worried about potential anti-
obesity rules and laws, have
publicly endorsed the first
lady’s message and recently
pledged to offer lower calorie
foods, change recipes and cut
portion sizes.
While watching to see if
foodmakers follow through,
some experts remain fasci-
nated by the idea of using
economics to get people to
eat better and exercise. Sales
taxes have been used to drive
up the cost of cigarettes and
drive down smoking rates,
and Brownell and others are
pushing for similar taxes on
soda.
Companies tend to be
more interested in incentives
than disincentives like taxes.
But the perks they attach to
wellness programs come in a
variety of forms and sizes.
Some reward employees
just for having a health evalu-
ation or simply enrolling in a
class — whether they com-
plete it or not. Others require
measurable weight loss or
exercise achievement, some-
times structuring it in a con-
test along the lines of “The
Biggest Loser” TV show.
Some companies offer
money, some vacation trips.
Some refund the cost of
Weight Watchers classes.
Others reduce health insur-
ance premiums.
The value of rewards can
range from measly to thou-
sands of dollars. Hunches
and human resources budgets
— not research — often drive
decisions about financial
incentive details. Companies
are quite frank about it.
OhioHealth set the max-
imum reward for its step-
counting program at $500.
“It just sounded right to us.
We thought that would be a
big enough number to help

Federal safety regulators are

gas pedals becoming trapped
by floor mats in 2010 Ford
Fusions and Mercury Milans.
The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration
opened a preliminary investi-
gation Friday after receiving
three such complaints involv-
ing unsecured all-weather
floor mats. There are no
reports of crashes or injuries.
A Ford spokesman, Said
Deep, said the problem was
due to drivers stacking all-
weather mats on top of floor
mats that come with the vehi-
cle. Ford’s all-weather mats
have warnings advising cus-
tomers not to pile them and
to secure them properly to the
floor, he said.
In a consumer advisory
Tuesday, NHTSA said the
problem was most likely to
occur when a driver pressed
on the pedal while merging or
passing in traffic. The safety
agency also warned Fusion
and Milan owners not to stack
mats.

The issue is similar to
Toyota’s problems with floor
mats that led to the recall of
worldwide. In those cases,
drivers said their vehicles
sped up when pedals became
lodged under all-weather
mats that were stacked on top
of the floor mats.
To solve the problem,
Toyota shortened its gas ped-
als and took out some of the
carpet padding below the
pedal.
Safety officials said the
investigation covers about
250,000 Fusions and Milans.
The preliminary investiga-
tion is meant to try to verify
whether the complaints have
merit and gauge the serious-
ness of any potential prob-
lems.
The Fusion, a midsize
sedan, is one of Ford’s most
popular models, with more
than 70,000 sold in the first
four months of 2010. This
year, Ford has sold about
11,500 Mercury Milans, a car
that is essentially the same as
the Fusion.
Ford shares fell 32 cents, or
2.7 percent, to close Tuesday
at $11.41.

Council, ladies and gentle-
men, what an honor it is to
speak to you on such a special
day. I’m truly humbled by
your request.
As Rick said, I’m Lt Col Rick
Johns, 88th Communications
Squadron commander at
Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
I command over 400 military
and civilian personnel servic-
ing 26,000 customers on 3
main bases. I’m a busy guy.
But when my uncle, Rodney
McGuire, asked if I would
come up and speak at the
Delphos Memorial Day event,
I jumped at the chance.
I joined the greatest Air
Force in the world on 29 Jan.
1984. And for the last 26
years, 4 months and 2 days,
I’ve moved all over the world,
deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan,
Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE and
Qatar, spent months on Navy
vessels and wore a gas mask
for hundreds of hours while
training for war in Europe and
Asia — I have loved every
minute of it.
Along the way I met and
married a beautiful German
girl, Beate, and we have had 3
great kids, Austin, Lucas and
Rebecca.
I’ve been told we have a
Combat Airman with us today.
Lt Ralph Hoehn.
Lt. Hoehn was a B-24
pilot during WWII and has
recently been awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross.
Sir, I salute you.
Memorial Day is a day
unlike any other. Since 1866
we have come together in our
communities, towns and vil-
lages, to place flowers and
flags on the graves of those
who have given their last full
measure
of devo-
tion to
our coun-
try.
When
Memorial
Day was
first con-
ceived
by Henry
Welles, a Rick Johns
drugstore
owner in Waterloo, New York
there were no Airmen or air-
planes, just returning soldiers
from our long and bloody civil
war.
Henry and other ordinary
citizens like him, just wanted
to pay tribute to the fallen who
sacrificed all for the ideals
of freedom, justice and equal
rights for all. So here I stand,
with you, to remember and
honor the heroes of Delphos
Ohio and her surrounding
communities.
What does it mean to be a
Combat Airman? As I men-
tioned, I’ve deployed several
times and have deployed over
60 of my Airmen to war since
taking command. I have the
enormous task of making sure
your sons and daughters are
prepared to fight in the Long
War.
It wasn’t that many years
ago that the Air Force primar-
ily stayed far back from the
fighting and sent our pilots to
engage our nation’s enemies. I
remember during the cold war
our biggest threat was nuclear
or chemical attack, thus the
hours spent training in chemi-
cal suits and gas masks. 9/11
changed everything for the
USAF.
Combat Airmen now spend
several weeks in basic training
learning combat skills, includ-
ing convoy training and small
team tactics. At Wright-Patt
we have intuited a year round
training schedule. We built a
realistic village in the woods
we call the Warfighter Training
Center (Camp Swampy to the
Airmen because it’s usually
a muddy mess) where we do
hands-on training in weapons
skills, integrated base defense,
self-aid buddy care, tactical
communications, map and ter-
rain reading and hand-to-hand
combat.
Back in July 2009, I sent
one of my combat nerds,
SrA Tre Porfirio, off to
Afghanistan. You see, I go to
the Dayton airport for all my
deploying and returning air-
men and the scene is always
the same. We have a crowd of
family, friends and co-work-
ers sending off our combat
airmen with well wishes. I had
the privilege to reassure SrA
Porfirio’s father and pregnant
girlfriend that we had trained
and equipped him and every-
thing would be OK.
Fast forward four
months, on the Friday before
Thanksgiving, at 3 o’clock in
the morning, I received a call
all commanders dread. One of
my Airmen, SrA Porfirio, had
been shot. Your mind races
when you get “the Call.” The
first thing on my mind was
his pregnant girlfriend and
dad and how I had assured
them 4 months ago he would
be safe. The commander in
Afghanistan on the other line
told me he wasn’t expected
to make it. So my first duty
was get a Chaplain and an
officer ready for family death
notification.
SrA Porfirio had been on
several dangerous missions
setting up communications for
the Army in remote villages
along the Northern Pakistani
border. He was playing cards
in his tent one day on Bagram
AB when the call came out
that he was moving forward.
He grabbed his gear, jumped
on the helicopter and flew to
a combat outpost in the small
town of Spera where he was
responsible for all commu-
nications for a 30 man US
Army unit. This particular
outpost also contained 30
newly trained Afghan Army
personnel.
SrA Porfirio was standing
outside his tent after a long
day of work when one of the
Afghan Army troops, in broad
daylight, walked up to SrA
Porfirio and shot him 3 times
in the back at close range. The
shooter then tried to run out of
the camp but was engaged by
SrA Porfirio’s brothers and
captured.
SrA Porfirio was medi-
vaced back to Bagram AB
where the first of many mir-
acles happened, he was alive.
He had lost a lot of blood, his
spleen, and part of his small
intestine, stomach and pan-
creas. After several surgeries
at Bagram AB he was flown
to Landstuhl Army Medical
Center in Germany for several
more surgeries.
By Thanksgiving Day
he was flown to Water
Reed Medical Center in
Washington, D.C., where he
finally regained conscious-
ness. The doctors tried to
save his bullet-scarred pan-
creas but had to remove it.
Here is where another miracle
happened. His surgeon was
friends with a doctor at the
University of Miami.
After talking on the phone,
both men and their teams left
their family Thanksgiving
meals to do something that
had never been done before.
The doctors at Walter Reed
removed the rest of SrA
Profirio’s pancreas and flew
the organ down to Miami
where a team salvaged the
insulin-producing cells, then
flew the cells back to Walter
Reed and transplanted them
into SrA Porfirio’s liver.
Three weeks later his liver
started producing insulin. He
is the first person to ever have
this life altering procedure
which will save him from a
life of diabetes.
When asked about the
Thanksgiving miracle, Dr.
Ricardi, who developed the
method for isolating cells
from the pancreas, said “It’s
an operation we would have
done for anyone, but for
someone who is putting his
life on the line for all of us, I
couldn’t think of a better way
to spend Thanksgiving”.
After 17 more surgeries,
SrA Profirio is now home,
back at Wright-Patterson AFB
recovering. His girlfriend, I’m
happy to say, gave birth to an
8-pound baby boy a month
ago and our hero is now a
proud dad.
Men and women like
SrA Profirio are the reason
we are here today. We have
memorial’s, like this beautiful
Delphos Memorial, because
it’s important to remember
that we’re free and to what
lengths our enemies will go
to take our freedoms from us.
It’s important to remember
the attacks of 9/11, the sacri-
fice of our men and women
in uniform, and the price we
all pay.
I’d like to close with my
two favorite quotes — one
from John F. Kennedy and the
other from Ronald Reagan.

After 40-year union, Gores to separate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Al and Tipper
Gore’s marriage lasted four decades,
through a deployment to Vietnam, the near-
death of a child and the heartache of losing
the disputed 2000 presidential election. But
over time, the former high school sweet-
hearts began to grow apart and carve out
separate lives, friends said.
On Tuesday, the pair announced that
they had decided to pursue those lives apart
from each other.
“After a great deal of thought and dis-
cussion, we have decided to separate,” the
Gores wrote in an e-mail to friends. “This is
very much a mutual and mutually support-
ive decision that we have made together.”
Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider con-
firmed the statement came from the Gores,
but declined to comment further.
For years, romance was an important
part of the couple’s public image. Al Gore
once claimed their relationship inspired the
novel “Love Story,” and the couple shared
an uncomfortably long kiss before millions
on the stage of the Democratic National
Convention.
The Gores, however, told friends they
“grew apart” after four decades of marriage
and there was no affair involved, according
to two longtime close associates and family
friends.
The couple had begun to pursue sepa-
rate lives, with the 62-year-old former vice
president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate on
the road frequently, said the associates, who
spoke on condition of anonymity because
they were not authorized to speak on the
couple’s behalf.
“Their lives had gotten more and more
separated,” one of the friends said.
The couple, who own homes in Nashville
and Gore’s hometown of Carthage, Tenn.,
had reportedly purchased an $8.8 million
estate in Montecito, Calif., this spring.
Married on May 19, 1970, at the National
Cathedral in Washington, the Gores pre-
sented an image of a happy couple during
his eight-year stint as vice president in the
1990s and a presidential candidate in 2000.
Their warm relationship stood in sharp
contrast to the Clinton marriage rocked
by Bill Clinton’s affair with White House
intern Monica Lewinsky, a scandal that
hung over Gore’s own presidential cam-
paign.
At the time, Gore said his wife was
“someone I’ve loved with my whole heart
since the night of my high school senior
prom.” Then, as if to prove it, he planted
that long, awkward kiss on her during the
2000 Democratic presidential convention.
Such public affection did much to enliv-
en the former vice president’s stuffy image.
Tipper Gore, 61, painted a picture of a play-
ful relationship, saying in a 2000 interview
with The Associated Press that she teased
her husband while he prepared for presiden-
tial debates by e-mailing him “lascivious”
messages.
“He e-mails me back and says, ’I’m los-
ing my concentration now,”’ she said.
“He’s a little bit more of a gregarious
flirt than people would realize — all within
bounds,” she added.
In a speech to the 2004 Democratic con-
vention, Gore said he wanted to thank “with
all my heart my children and grandchildren,
and especially my beloved partner in life,
Tipper.”
The “Love Story” claim came in 1997,
when Gore told a reporter he and Tipper
were the inspiration for Erich Segal’s 1970s
best-seller. A surprised Segal said that
Gore, whom he knew at Harvard, had
inspired one side of his male hero’s person-
ality — the one controlled by a domineering
father — but his book had nothing to do
with Tipper Gore.
In a letter written to then-girlfriend
Tipper as a 17-year-old college freshman,
Al Gore hinted at that dynamic. “Mother’s
having a fit about me riding the motorcycle
back to Harvard. Dad’s mad at my long
hair,” he wrote.
The Gores have four children, Karenna,
Kristin, Sarah and Albert III, all now adults.
Their son underwent rehab treatment in
2007 after marijuana and prescription drugs
were found in his car when he was pulled
over for driving 100 mph in his Toyota
Prius.
After losing the 2000 election, Gore
turned his attention to climate change,
undertaking a worldwide campaign which
led in 2007 to a Nobel Peace Prize and an
Oscar for the documentary “An Inconvenient
Truth.”
The couple were married about six
months when Gore deployed to Vietnam as
an Army public information officer. When
he got home, he landed a job as a reporter at

worked there as a photographer. Her inter-
est in photography continued after she left
journalism and she usually had a camera
with her while helping her husband on his
campaigns.
