Introduction

Fitting is the basic work performed at the workshop by the mechanic. It is a method to
remove metal from the piece surface. Fitting work mostly use the hand tools rather than the
machine tools to produce the desired product. The hand tool operation or bench work consist
of marking, cutting, filling, chiselling, drilling, sawing, tapping and fitting. In order to ensure
safety at the workshop, safety precautions should be followed while performing the fitting
work.

General Objective

1) To produce a product through the given technical drawing

Specific Objective

1) Transfer the technical drawing measurement to the work piece

2) Carry out basic work bench such as marking, sawing, filling, drilling and tapping
3) Use appropriate engineering tools and equipment in workshop project

Safety Procedures

1) Do not wear any accessory when entering the workshop (watches, necklaces, etc.)
2) Wear safety boots and workshop jacket
3) Do not joke around when the machine is operating
4) Do not joke around in the workshop

4
Equipment and Tools

1) Hammer
2) Hand hacksaw
3) Tapper
4) Vernier calliper
5) Ruler
6) Vice
7) Scribe
8) Centre punch
9) File
10) Chisel

Machineries
1) Drilling machine

Work Procedure

Step 1
From a long piece of metal, cut a small piece of metal with the length of 53mm-55mm

Step 2
With the metal vised, remove rusts from the metal with a file

Step 3
Continue to file the metal until the width of 50mm, the length of 73mm, and the thickness of
10mm is achieved.

Step 4
Mark the points where holes are going to be drilled and part of the metal that will be removed
with a scriber

Step 5
With a drilling machine, drill holes on the metal piece according to the correct measurement

Step 6
Remove the unwanted part of the metal with a hand hacksaw and the drilling machine. The
unwanted part is chiselled with a chisel to completely separate our project with the unwanted
part

Step 7
Smoothen the surface of the project with a file

Step 8
Create a thread in the hole in the middle of the project with a tapper.

Discussion

During the 3 weeks process of completing this project, there are some problems faced by my
classmates and I. The major problem would be taking turns using the drilling machine. Since
there are only few drilling machines in the workshop, we had to wait quite a while to use the
machine. If we were just to wait our turns using the machine, there will be no progress in our
project and we will not be able to finish our project in time. So, instead of just waiting, we
decided to saw the unwanted part of the metal while waiting for our turns using the drilling
machine

Conclusion

As a conclusion, I have achieved all of the objectives stated. Throughout these 3 weeks, I
have obtained a lot of skills and knowledge. One of the skill that I have obtained is removing
the unwanted part of the metal from my project by using hand hacksaw, drilling machine and
chisel. Moreover, I also learnt how to use engineering tools and equipment appropriately. I
am sure these skills and knowledge I obtained will help me a lot when I am working later on
in the future.
