ENGLISH TENSES

1. Present Simple
- st happens all the time or repeatedly - I work as a teacher.
- st is true in general The earth goes round the sun.
- with frequency adverbs always, usually, never, seldom, rarely, sometimes,
often, once a week, every morning, etc.
- timetables, programmes The film starts tomorrow at 6.
- with stative verbs like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, realise, suppose,
mean, understand, believe, remember, belong, contain,
consist, depend, seem, see, hear, smell, taste
2. Present Continuous
- st is happening at the time of speaking Im working now.
- st is happening in a period around now She wants to work in Italy, so she
is learning Italian.
- changes happening around now Is your English getting better?
- arrangements (in the near future) Im leaving for Scotland tomorrow.
- annoying actions Youre always losing your keys!
3. Present Perfect Simple
- actions in the past have a result now Ive lost my keys.
- giving new information without a past time expression The police have
arrested two men.
- with the following adverbs and time expressions just, already, (not) yet, so
far, ever, never, recently
(lately), in the last week, etc., since, for, today, this week, etc.
4. Present Perfect Continuous
- actions that have recently stopped or just stopped Im tired. Ive been
working hard.
- st that began in the past and still continues now Ive been working on the
topic.
- how long st has been happening It has been raining for 2 hours, since 2
oclock.
5. Past Simple
- finished actions I lived in Brno.
- with the following time expressions yesterday, last week, etc., in 1976, 10
minutes ago, , from 1858 to 1860,

6. Past Continuous

7. Past Perfect Simple

8. Past Perfect Continuous
- st had been happening for a period of time before st else happened He had
been working for Philips for 3 years before he found this job.
9. Future Simple
- decisions at the time of speaking Ill phone her now.
- polite requests Will you tell me the way to Big Ben, please?
- promises Ill pay you back on Friday.
- offers Ill help you with that.
- threats Ill report you to the police.
- predictions He wont pass the exam because he hasnt studied enough.
- after the following verbs assume, be afraid, be sure, believe, expect, suppose,
think, wonder
10. Going to
- decisions, plans, intentions (not arrangements) Im going to buy a new car.
- st inevitable Look at these clouds! Its going to rain.
11. Future Continuous
- st happening in the future at or for a certain time At 3 oclock Ill be sitting
on the plane. Ill be
working on the project for the whole week.
- 2 future simultaneous actions Ill be queuing for the tickets and youll be
searching for the parking place.
12. Future Perfect Simple
- st will already be complete Ill have packed my things by ten.
13. Future Perfect Continuous
- st will already be complete at a certain time after a certain period of time In
September hell have been teaching at this school for 10 years.
