FAQ
Q: Can I make a copy for a teacher so she can photocopy from the photocopy for her students?
A: Photocopying from a photocopy of this book is known as a pirate copy and is illegal. Isnt it better just to purchase the book with permission to photocopy for less than $50?
Q: Can I borrow this book from a resource center or library then photocopy it?
A: No, that would be copyright violation. You only get a photocopy license if you purchase
the book or your school has purchased a site license.

Photocopiable by Purchasing Teacher for Use By Her/His Students Only
Introduction
I love teaching level one. However, it does have its challenges.
The challenge isnt the students limited language or even presenting
ideas. For me the challenge was and is having sufficient practices
and varying them enough to meet the students need for repetition
and still keeping them excited about learning.
The idea of putting together these books started four years ago
when I was asked to teach Level 1. I hadnt taught this level for
many years and remembered how hard it was to find materials.
After a renewed look for materials and finding only a page here
and there I started creating, testing and recording my level 1 ideas.
Teaching level 1 is about building a foundation. Its my hope that
these drills, worksheet and activities make your life as a teacher a
little easier and help you and your students have a good time while
building the foundation for their on going learning.

GENERAL INDEX
An 8 Week Plan
Here is an example of one of my eight week plans. Each week themes and
grammar points from previous weeks are repeated and built upon. There is
a constant circling back and the adding on of new elements. As well in some
sessions certain themes are developed more thoroughly than others, and
some themes such as health are often added.

Alphabet Practice
Preparation and Instructions: Photocopy one set of cards for each group of
about three students. Cut out the cards. Pass out the cards and have each small
group put the cards in alphabetical order. Then the students practice saying
the alphabet.
Follow up by having each group mix up one pile of cards. The first student
takes the top card, reads the letter on the card aloud and says then says the
following letter. For example, if the letter M is picked up the student should
say M and then N.
In the next variation a student picks a card, reads the letter silently, and then
says the letter before the letter on the card, says the letter on the card and then
the letter after the letter on the card. For example, if the letter card N is
picked the student says M, N and O.
Option: You can also repeat this process by having the students name the
letters of the alphabet as well as the sounds. ( Tip: for this it is best to focus
only on the consonants.)
Activity: Divide the cards among the students. Each student dictates their
letters to their partners. You can use the cards and the students notebooks or
use the Alphabet Dictation materials on page 3.
Variation: The alphabet lists on page 5 can be used as a drill using the ideas
above.

Alphabet Dictation
Instructions: Divide the
class into groups of four.
If you want to use groups
of three or if you have
an odd number, then
eliminate one set.
Provide each student with
a copy of the worksheet
on page 4 and with one
strip of letters to dictate
to their group. Student 1
should begin and dictate
their list, then proceed to
Student 2, and so on.
When finished, they
exchange lists and check
their own work.

Ask Who?
Preparation: Use the people pictures with names on the next two pages or cut
pictures of people from magazines. Use post it notes to put names on them.
The names provided allow students to have pronunciation practice while doing
the Who exercise. Post the pictures in groups of two or three around the
room. It is ideal to have a grouping of pictures for each small group. Photocopy one set of question cards from page 14 for each pair of students.
Instructions: Give each pair of students a set of question cards. They should
go to one set of pictures, select a card, point to a picture and ask the question
to their partner. The partner answers the question and is then asked another
question. After a few minutes the teacher should get everyone to move to a
new set of pictures and the students should change roles. Continue until all
groups have been to all sets of pictures, or you think the activity has run its
course.
Follow up: Post everyone's name on the board. Form new groups. Use the
same cards to practice learning each others names. Repeat the activity with
several pairs.
Tip: Model each activity before having the students do it. The activity is not
very complicated when the instructions are modelled first.
