My classroom management
To begin with my classroom will be an ideal classroom, because the classroom that I am
currently working in is a nonverbal classroom, and so it is quite different than any classroom
strategy that we have looked at in class. Although some of my students are in inclusive settings
which would work perfectly for this assignment. I also found while taking the classroom
management quiz at the end of chapter 15 that my score parallels both B and C which are the
following discipline models: Curwin and Mendlers Discipline with Dignity, Evertsons
Classroom Organization and Management Program (COMP), Kohns Building Community, and
Marshalls Discipline without Stress, but it also includes Colorosos Inner Discipline, Positive
Behavior Support, Bodine and Crawfords Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation, and
Gathercoals Judicious Discipline. The seven areas in which I will cover are Philosophy, Context,
Procedures, Rules, Reinforcement, Consequences, and Implementations.
My philosophy to any classroom situation is very similar to Briannes in chapter 15 in
that it would be a student- centered approach. In this approach as was mentioned in Marshalls
Discipline without stress punishments or rewards that the student will take responsibility for their
own behavior. The students have the inner drive to do what is right and learn responsibility
through interactions and experiences in a safe and welcoming environment. Gathercoal believes
that student-centered teachers, like me, think of students as inherently good and believe they can

trust students to do the right thing without being told. Therefore, I will be quite comfortable
putting into practice methods designed to help students learn and develop attitudes of respect and
responsibility. When behavior problem does happen, which it will. I will find the best method to
bring about a reasonable resolution to the problem. Every interaction that I may face with a
misbehaving child I will turn it into a learning situation for all concern. I will make my
classroom a place where children will come to learn, and also to have fun. I enjoy that in my
classroom now, and I would try to continue that practice when I leave the school that I am
volunteering at right now. The students that I would love to work with would be between
kindergarten and fifth grade like I do now.
Context: My ideal classroom would have a circular construction I would be able to face all my
students or the students I work with, so I would know what they are doing at all times. I would
face them and have eye-contact with them. Some people might even say I had eyes in the back of
my head. Hopefully there would be windows so that the sun can shine through, and brighten up
the room. I would have a desk near the wall that would have a basket full of sharpened pencils,
and work that has been corrected, and is ready to turn back to the students. I would make sure to
volunteer one person a week who would be in charge of passing back the papers right before the
class day begins. There would also be space on this table for work that needs to be turned in to
the teacher. Also on this table would be a reward jar that would be filled with marbles every day.
On the board in front of the classroom would be the rules that I and the students have put
together. Alongside the rules would be the lesson objectives of what the students would aim to
learn in that particular subject.
Procedures:

1. Entering the classroom

The students will go to the table which holds the completed work and the place
where they need to turn in their work and grab it.
They would put their coats and backpacks in their lockers
They would then sit down and read a book or finish work that needs to be
completed before the bell rings. (bell ringer work)
When the bell rings all eyes will be at the front of the classroom
2. Classroom Arrangement
The classroom would be in a circle with me on the outside and the completed
table.
The students will know their own desk by the color labeled on the desk blue, red,
yellow and green, so that the student would not be confused.
3. Attention Signal
The attention signal would be the coyote signal thumb-middle finger. This would
tell the students to be quiet.
4. Supplies
The supplies will be at the front of the class on the completed desk the students
should grab a pencil on the way to their desk in the morning. If their pencil
breaks they can retrieve another pencil.
They should have notebooks in hand before they sit down
5. Personal needs
If student needs to go to the bathroom. Stand up and quietly exit the room and go
to the bathroom. No commotion is necessary.
Same with the drinking fountain. It would be preferred that they bring their own
drinking bottle, but if not just get up from your desk and get a drink of water.
6. Asking questions
Depends on the lesson. If the lesson is math and the student thinks he knows the
answer just say it. If it is another subject, let other people in the classroom have a
chance to answer the question, then I would prefer you to raise your hand.
7. Team Time
Every class period would have a chance for student to either work in pairs or
groups of three or four. Team work is very important, and cant be stressed
enough.
8. Transition Time

In between classes and subjects students can visit quietly among themselves if
we are just going from one subject to another.
If we are moving from one classroom to another please form one line, and then
quietly move from your classroom to the other classroom, so has not to disturb
any other classroom that may be in session.
9. Work Time
This is the time that I give the class to work on their different subjects. This
should be a quiet time, if the student has a question he may quietly ask his
neighbor or raise his hand. I will be there to assist them in their questions. But
first try your neighbor because you may be able to help each other out to answer
the question.
10. Leaving the class
When class is over quietly put your stuff that you are taking home in your
backpack, and leave the room.
I will wish them a great day, and praise them as they leave for the great job that
they did during the day.
Rules: Will be posted in the front of the room and will be followed:
1.) There will be four basic rules:
Respect for each other and each others items
Solve problems together if necessary
Make good decisions so that you dont get in trouble
Have fun and learn a lot of information
Reinforcement:
There would be shout outs for people who do well in the class.
There will be like Marshall pointed out inward satisfaction for
doing a great job and keeping the peace.
Students will hold themselves to a high standard and will not
be disappointed.
There will be a jar that will be filled with 25 marbles everyday
as the students do well, and get their work done then they
will have the team leader put the marbles in the jar. When the
jar is full then the class will do something fun like watch a
movie or play a game. There might even be time for them to
go outside, and play. Spend extra time doing their homework.
It would utilize the premack principle which says that we do
something we might not like for instance, math, and then we
get rewarded by doing something fun like watching a movie.

Consequences:
The breaking of the rules would have some consequences:
I would have a talk with the disruptive student or

students
I would try and get them to see where they made an
error because mistakes are allowed in my classroom

If there is more than one person involved I would try and

get the people together, so that they could handle their
differences. If this didnt work, I would have another
classmate serve as a mediator to solve the issue.

If this still didnt work, I would hold a class meeting to

discuss what had just happened what steps we can take
as a class that would help prevent the disruptive act in
the future.

Then I would take away five marbles from the marble jar
for misbehavior.

Implementation:
The way that I would teach my students the new method of
discipline is the very first week of class go over the new
procedures, and make sure that everyone understands what is
expected of them.

The way that I would know that they played an active role in
this classroom plan is that if there is anyone new to the class
that they would be able to teach the rules of behavior to them
as well.
If there is a substitute teacher or a guest speaker I would know
that my students understood the plan by acting upon it when I
was not present to make sure that they followed the rules.
Summary: My classroom would be a place that students can go and learn.
Not be afraid to make a mistake. If they are having a bad day, they would be

free to come to me and explain the situation. They would know that I was
the teacher, but they would also know I was there friend, and cared about
them as individuals which is one of the biggest aspect of my classroom
management style. A teacher who deserves respect, but is also their friend.
