Immediatehypersensitivityskinteststoeightselectallergenswereperformedona
sample(N=16,204)oftheciviliannoninstitutionalpopulationoftheUnitedStates,6to74
yearsofage,inthesecondNationalHealthandNutritionExaminationSurvey(NHANES
II).Theeightallergenswerehousedust,cat,dog,Alternaria,mixedgiant/shortragweed,
oak,perennialryegrass,andBermudagrass.Skintestreactivitywasdefinedasamean
erythemadiameter10.5mmatthe20minutereading.Overall,20.2%ofthe
participantsreactedtoatleastoneallergen.Peakreactivityoccurredinthe12to24year
oldagegroup.Reactivitywashigherinblacksversuswhites,butthedifferencedidnot
reachstatisticalsignificance(23.2%versus19.8%p>0.05).Maleparticipantshadan
increasedprevalenceofreactivityversusfemaleparticipantsinwhites(22.0%versus
17.6%),butnotinblacks(23.2%versus23.3%).Skintestreactivityincreasedinboth
whitesandblackswithincreasingincomeandeducation.Theprevalenceofskintest
reactivitywashigherinurbanversusruralareas,butthedifferencewasstatistically
significantonlyforwhites(whites,21.6%versus16.4%blacks,23.8%versus18.4%p
>0.05).Withlogisticregression,themostimportantpredictorsofskintestreactivityin
whiteswereage,sex,urbanresidence,andpovertystatus.Inblacks,themostimportant
predictorswereage,urbanresidence,andpovertystatus.
